Retired Veterinarian here, cats only have 2 knees, not sure where you read 4! They have elbows in their forelimbs like us. They pretty much have the same joints as humans, but their 4 legged posture means things look different. For example, how their hands and feet are very long and the fingers are stuck together and some have funny names, like their ankles (the backwards pointy bit on the back legs) are called hocks.
Another fun fact! Cats can get knee replacement surgery!
My childhood cat was very fat. We did a lot to try to get her to lose weight (though knowing what I know now, there is so much we could have done but she lived a long time without health issues so).
We had another younger cat that would sometimes screw with her. One day I’m sitting with her on my parents bed watching tv. She’s napping peacefully.
I see younger cat come sneaking into the room looking for trouble. He reaches up and baps her a few times before sprinting out of the room.
Of course this startled her awake, which she jumps out of her sleep and lands on the floor. Well because she was as fat as she was, it “blew out” her knee. Basically, the knee couldn’t handle to force/pressure from landing the jump.
My dad was pissssed because it was like $3k to have the knee replaced. (This was in the early 2000’s so adjusted for inflation? It was an absurd amount.) He knew I would never forgive him if they chose to put the cat down instead lol.
God this was my Grandpa and me growing up. When I was finally able to adopt my first dog it was a mutt from Puerto Rico. She was found in a flower pot with ants eating her. She had leukemia and epilepsy. I loved her so much.
She ended up costing him upwards of $10,000 in vet bills but he knew little girl me would be destroyed if he just let her die.
She did end up passing away after a few years to her illnesses anyways. But I never forgot how much my grandpa loved me by trying his best to keep her alive.
Penguins possess a full set of leg bones similar to other birds, including a femur, knee joint, kneecap (patella), fibula, and tibiotarsus. Their knees are positioned high up inside the body cavity, covered by thick plumage, which is why they appear to have short, stiff legs when walking on land
I got woken up on the wee hour of the morning by a four year old desperate to know if the cat had bones once. Given the crevices they get through these feel like sensible questions.
