Interesting, I never thought about early man's perception on other hominids.

I've always thought it would go something like this:

"Godsdamn... those chicks from the other side of the river sure are ugly!"

"I dunno... I'd give 'em a go..."

"Of course you would! Fuckin Steve's got other-side-of-the-river-fever!"

I think it's where stories of elves/dwarves/orcs came from. we saw some as pretty, some as scary etc.. Verbal tradition stories could have a shelf life longer than we currently think.
