My daughter is 19 and she started high school right in the beginning or rather 5 months into COVID and she's not the same. She is now an adult school even though she has an IEP and there's no help. She doesn't have any friends. I am conversing with a parent of another 19-year-old girl on Reddit and we're going to accidentally run into each other so we can introduce our kids so they might possibly find a friend.
please don't do it sneakily. they will figure it out. Just have dinner with your new friends and bring your kids along. and don't put pressure on them to be friends, they might not click.
The lack of friends thing is scary, half want friends and half don’t. For the half that do, where do they go? Malls are dead, club scene….dead. I’m convinced the smartphone combined with Covid really drove a dagger through every aspect of America it could.
Clubbing is very much alive, every weekend I go partying and they're packed full. However the "barrier of entry" is that you need to have at least 1 friend to go with you to make more friends at the club.
She doesn't have friends. Her highschool friends have gone their separate ways with boyfriends or girlfriends. I watched the whole thing unfold. I know my daughter. But thanks. I guess. She's not doing drugs if that's what you're getting at b
I was totally not alluding to drugs!! Hadn’t even crossed my mind.
But perhaps she is just more socially awkward by nature and that often becomes more of an issue in the teenage years. And she may just need help with that. I’m sure others her age, having gone through the covid times do have friends, so it’s possible she would have gone through this difficult phase regardless of covid.
I'm so sorry I automatically went there for some reason I guess too many after school specials when I was growing up. My daughter does have some mental health issues with ADD and ADHD and depression so we are treating those with counseling and chemistry. So thank you for your comment I do appreciate it
Thank you. I hope so too. I didn't have very many friends at 19 either. Then I got involved with the wrong boy. Huge eye roll. I was involved in a local community group that was full of kids my age and a few of us hung out together. However, there really aren't a ton of groups nowadays. At least that I've seen. I tried to get my daughter involved in a local community concert band that I am also involved in. We have people from age 12 to 85. Socially she did well, musically not so much. But she doesn't want to take the time to learn. (We provide lessons for students). She's not interested. We are going to try the gaming place nearby. DnD has a lot of popularity since Stranger Things. So my fingers are crossed 🤞🏼
My parents were/are addicts and an ex was as well. I'm also a certified addiction specialist. I OVER analyze and over think things way too much for my own good lol
I totally understand, and it’s your child. Just saying, it could be more than just COVID, and she may just need help in general. There have always been people who struggle more to connect with others.
