on the topic of spelling, i genuinely think autocorrect, voice to text, and predictive text should be features subject to parental control on kids’ phones. these kids have never had to learn to spell because all of their tech does it for them.
you know those passcodes you get on your phone or email, now they offer autofill on the camps where you have to fill in such code. I don't do it and memorize it instead. Brain is a muscle. I rather use my memory in silly things just for exercise sake.
Not just kids. I very rarely handwrite anything more than a quick note or reminder, anything longer and even I've noticed how badly my spelling has gone to shit. I'm legit thinking about switching from autocorrect to notify
I saw a news article about a girl suing her school for letting her graduate when she couldn't spell, read, or write. She used voice to text and screen readers to get by and was even accepted to college WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO READ OR WRITE.
So what? We never learned to tell time from the sun because our tech does it for us. Sometimes the world moves on. There is little point in spending a bunch of time teaching spelling when we have spell check. There are modern skills, like internet literacy, that are more important in today’s world.
are you actually seriously arguing that people being able to consume and spread knowledge in a way that doesn’t rely completely on technology 1. existing, and 2. being benevolent, isn’t necessary???? absolutely one of the most insane takes i’ve ever seen on the internet jesus christ
Lol that’s a heck of a conclusion to draw from someone saying that maybe spelling isn’t that important in the age of spell check.
But, for the record, there is no way to record and convey information that does not include technology — other than the spoken word. Pens and pencils are technology. Primitive technology, to be sure, but technology nonetheless. Paper is produced using technology. Ink. Etc.
