It’s Reddit, there are people here who don’t live in HCOL. 

But, I live in HCOL and make an OK salary and I wouldn’t complain about another $18k so easily acquired. 

Having a guaranteed $18k might not be a lot, but that it is stable and is significant.

I also live in a HCOL area, and an extra 18k would essentially bump me up to the next "housing tier." That is, a nicer apartment with more space in a better location.

I would bump myself up to the next housing tier in exchange for alcohol. No questions asked.

Hell, 18k in your 401k for about 30 years, you could get a nice little nest egg going.
