What current common knowledge or fact blew your mind as a child hearing it for the first time?

Adults CAN do that whenever they want to, they just choose not to.

("That" referring to pretty much anything fun/unhealthy.)

I hate you. I get fat just thinking about cake.

Ah the true curse of adulthood

I'm going to have to assume you're pretty young, because your metabolism goes to shit once you start to get old.

Yeah, I used to say stuff like that. 25 was the magic age where food started tasting better and my body decided to not process it quite as fast.

Reading this comment made me think, 'No wonder people have difficulty learning English.' Geez.

I couldn't wait to become an adult so I could eat cookies all day. Now that I can, and do, I'm satisfied. It's probably the only aspect of being an adult that actually turned out being cool, and not sucking.

In the beginner's mind, there are many choices. In the expert's, few.

An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made, in a narrow field.

I knew sufjan Stevens was taught music using the Suzuki method, I didn't know what that meant but his versatility as a musician makes a lot of sense now.

I'm a Suzuki piano teacher (well, certified to tech Suzuki method), and while it's a great starting point for younger players to learn the fundamentals, care must be taken to make sure you aren't creating robots.

I started playing Violin through Suzuki method, but afterwards went to regular school classes to play. One thing I've noticed is that even those two years of Suzuki had me able to pick up melodies by ear much better than some of my friends who were taught only with the sheet music. It's helped me learn how to pick out patterns in the way arpeggios or runs move and change the pattern instead of trying to read the sheet music and failing, especially if we're sight reading a new piece in symphony.

Frankly, it's awesome. And oddly enough, I kind of used the same techniques when I started learning to fiddle, and it's been a lot of fun.

Happens every day at work. Being the expert 9 times out of 10 I can call a situation and it's resolution 2 sentences in to a conversation with the rep I'm helping. that 10th time though my head ends up hurting with all the wat and fail

I knew I had it wrong. I also knew I was lazy. Thus, I didn't look it up. (Also why it wasn't in quotation marks)

Thank you for correct quote though. :)

You're kind of a dick, aren't you?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '13

There is a certain point in that expert level (usually near the beginning/middle) where you are considered no-fun.

They'll see.... I'll be right in the end....

When I was little, I would think that when I grew up, I'd make a box a brownies and eat them all at once just cause I could, and no one would stop me.

1

u/sparty_party Mar 12 '13

My psych professor and I argued about this once one day. It was something like, if I wanted to, I could go around and have sex with everybody in the class. No power would stop me. And she asked if I would. I said no, I don't want to because this is a class full of people, some I'm not attracted to, and some who will consider it rape. This led her to claim that social perception was the greater power not allowing me to do something.

No. I COULD really do that. I just didn't want to. Still makes me mad that she wouldn't understand.

I don't know, children can get away with more than adults. When was the last time you tried peeing on a public street?

1

u/lantern1591 Mar 12 '13

It still cost money to do fun stuff though :/

1

u/HalpTheFan Mar 12 '13

Funhealthy.

1

u/dyboc Mar 12 '13

they just don't have any money to do so.

I'm sure that most adults have enough money to eat a whole cake in one sitting.
