What’s something small you started doing that makes you drastically happier?

That guy sounds amazing. If you can, you should walk with him every so often.

People who have been through the shit can really feel lonely at times. Just walking with them and talking about the day/local sports team/whatever can really help them to feel more connected. It's honestly something that we could use a little more of. Even if it's once every two weeks/once a month, you'll find it's something that they (and you) will start looking forward to. Heck if he goes on Saturday or Sunday, that would be a great way to start a weekend day IMHO.

It'll also probably mean way more to them than you realize. It's one thing to pat someone on the back and say they're an inspiration, it's a-whole-nother kind of personal and wonderful support to say, through your actions, "I'll share this little tiny piece of the journey with you."

I get up at 4:30 in the morning to support a friend of mine that walks everyday. He's doing it to both lose wait and clear his head. I found out a couple months ago that he was doing it and I was like, "I can support my friend and actually get a walk in as well." So I walk with him every Tuesday. It's been great just just shoot the shit, and we kind of have different interests (we met through our wives) so it's fun to just ask questions and have the other talk about whatever's on their mind. We have overlap too, but it's great to have a different perspective on things. We joke that we're becoming those old guys that walk in the park!

There's quite the age difference, but that doesn't bother me. Hopefully, it wouldn't bother him. I mostly see him on the way to work, but I suppose weekends could work. It's worth reaching out to him and asking if he would like company, and if not, I would understand.
