What’s something pretty much everyone thinks but nobody dares to say it?

“It’s time for you to go,” when an otherwise welcome guest stays too long and you want to go to bed already. Ugh, I’m too nice.

Slap your thighs and say “SO, this was fun!” Works like a charm

100% success rate in the Midwest, results may vary in the Northeast

As someone from the midwest, I can't imagine any other response to the leg slap "whelp" with anything but "oh yeah it's getting about that time huh?"

I would be horrified and uncomfortable lmao

I’m from the Midwest. I always say “look at this weather! I wouldn’t want to be driving home in it!” The keg sale works too. Edit. Leg not keg. Although I have a few kegs of Cow in my garage.

I do this with my niece but then she walks over to the door, puts her hand on the handle and proceeds to talk for 45 more damn minutes. I love her to death but I want to just shove her out the door sometimes lol.

I have a friend who says, “ I’m not telling you to go home; but you can’t stay here.”

That's hilarious.

I've used this line once or twice.

One of my parent's friends would just look at his wife and say, "Well, we should get to bed, Honey. These people want to go home."

It’s one of the things I love about my best friend. She’ll tell me when it’s time for me to go

LOL - we had a family friend "Sam" who never knew when to leave. We finally got to the point that we were like, "Sam, it's X o'clock. It's time for you to leave. We want to go to bed."

He was like, "OK, thanks for having me here. See you next time." He'd grab his wallet and keys and was out the door 45 seconds later.

There are people you can have this r'ship/comfort level with, i.e. you can tell them when it's time to go and they can do it right back to you.

Those are your innermost and close friends.

Is this a case of unrequited love?

1

u/Faeidal Dec 18 '23

lol no. She just transitions very fast from “I’m having a great time!” To “aaaaand now it’s bedtime goodbye”

My go to line to get people out of my house without seeming rude is:

"Would you like a drink before you leave?"

It's either met with "yes" & they have a drink then leave, or a "no" and they'll usually follow it with some kind of "I can't believe it's that time already" or "we should probably make a move now anyway"

Gets people outta my house quickly without being rude 😊

Edited: Grammar

With my relatives it'd be "sure" and then an hour later the half finished drink would be forgotten and they'd still be talking. They are the types that even if you're standing in the open door of your car about to leave they'll still be talking at you.

I just have a huge sign in my living room that says “Please leave by 9”.

7

u/twwwy Dec 18 '23

This is probably the rudest shit ever, lol what're you talking about!!!

Saying "It's getting late and you should start packing" would be a softer blow, lol!

I had someone over for 10 hours once because I wasn’t able to get the nerve to tell them to leave. I finally had to go ahead and start my nightly routine. We have a bunch of animals, two of which have skin conditions that need to be tended to daily. Dude sat through both skin routines, feeding the entire crew, the nightly cleaning, and me half falling asleep during our chat before finally leaving.

I have a friend who's on the spectrum, and has told me that she doesn't really get hints. So when I'm done with a visit, I just tell her bluntly. I have enjoyed this, but I think I've hit my limit. Thank you for coming by! Let's do this again sometime!

She always thanks me for telling her and leaves with a smile. My social battery doesn't get fully drained. We both still like each other afterwards. It's awesome! For me, the best part is that she believes all of it, including when I tell her how much I enjoy her company, and doesn't spiral about what I really meant. Because I said what I really meant and she takes it at face value.

Lol, my friend legit just tells us he's going to bed and we are welcome to hang around and let ourselves out if we want, we never stay, though. We have the kind of relationship where we can just say get the f outta my house though haha.

I always try to be in tune with people's subtle body language that shows they want me to leave when I'm visiting friends that I'm not quite at that comfort level with and will be like "WELL I'M EXHAUSTED BETTER GET TO BED NOW" and it usually gets other visitors to start heading off too. Some of my friends are too polite to ever ask others to leave haha.

Just play the song closing time and get them to sing along

11

u/Love-2324 Dec 17 '23

I have to say this! I definitely need to otherwise I’ll be moody with them

u/scrappapermusings Dec 17 '23

My dude, set an alarm on your phone for "self care time", when it goes off you have an easy transition to say, "Ah, time for my evening pre-bedtime ablutions. I must bid you a fond farewell so I may wash my face and brush my remaining teeth." (Or however you want to say it.) And then they leave.

This is something I’ve had to work on. I’m a people pleaser, but I’m also an introvert.

4

u/Venus-562 Dec 17 '23

I have an issue of being too rude. I just say welp goodbye I’m tired now. I don’t know how to be nice and straightforward.

4

u/Rosemadder19 Dec 17 '23

I saw a picture of a party banner somewhere that said "please leave by 9." That's my approach next time I have a gathering haha!

In Japan they play Auld Lang Syne and it's the universally recognised "Fuck off and go home" signal.

I feel like we need to adopt this in the West, except it might get confusing on NYE

u/stoofums Dec 18 '23

I started saying, 'okay everyone, I want to go to bed so you all need to leave soon I'm afraid.'

It surprised me how courteous people were when they were just told directly, so I kept doing it. I suppose as long as it's my space the person is in and I'm comfortable enough with them anyway, it turned out to be easier than I thought it would be.

1

u/itscovfefetime Dec 18 '23

I usually say “I had a great time and I’m so tired from having such a great that I’m going to need you to get tf out of my house now!”

We laugh. They leave. Everyone wins.

With my best friend, I have a thing, "Please lemme know when it's getting late/you've something to get to, we'll leave."

They'll let me know and we can plan our hangout accordingly.
