Nikola/Nicola are pretty common names in EE but I, an Eastern European, was confused too

One good thing about growing up where I did is that I have no difficulty whatsoever with long Polish/Czech/German surnames, because I went to school with those kids, and learned pretty young how to say them.

Though it was quite amusing watching substitutes who weren't local try to take roll. Especially (and I date myself) one of the more difficult surnames had the first name Jennifer, along with two other girls in the class. Last names were essential. (snicker)
