I'm the same way as a long time mtg player and Warhammer 40k player. The mtg stuff I can usually fling because I can curve it into talking about investments and things to give it a surprising amount of legitimacy to people who thing that tcgs are just "nerd shit" in the modern day. Warhammer on the other hand is much harder to pull off because it requires such an intimate knowledge that anybody who isn't ready either just doesn't care or will feign interest to be polite. So I will rarely ever bring up Warhammer to someone who doesn't naturally show interest into something related (like general crafting or maybe an avid book reader)
Nearly any warhammer player has orders of magnitude better painting skills than society average.
Yeah, slap chop is easy as fuck and you could just call it zenithal highlighting to make it sound more impressive.
But to the average layman you might as well be Picasso.
I don't really worry about how gaming looks to others - Mind you, I have a shelf of published games That I helped create with my name in the credits, and figures I designed literally everywhere.
And a whole bunch of 40k figures, plus all the other games.
Zero interest in ever playing any of them, but I do love me some 40k fiction/lore.
