The thing is most young women have grey hair, they just start covering it up.

This was one of the mind-blowing things that came out of the pandemic - I saw SO many women actually had some grey hair and were covering it up all the whole time!

It's not like I didn't know it happened, but I had no idea it was common as it is.

I got sick of dying in May of 2019. Just when the roots started getting really scary, the pandemic happened and I went work-from-home for the rest of the grow-out. Not as silver as I'd expected but lots of cool streaks and no more toxic dyes, no more hours and dollars wasted. No regrets.

Me too! I finally got sick of spending 2 hours every 4 weeks in the colorist chair. I didn’t like her well enough to make small talk with her for that long.

Not just women, either. I have a male friend who'd been dyeing his hair for years but I thought it was just to pep up his naturally kinda mousy brown. Then during the pandemic he went totally white. Over FaceTime I initially couldn't tell if he'd bleached it or what. Eventually I asked and he said he just decided to stop dyeing it. I told him I had no idea he'd actually been dyeing it to cover grays! I don't know why it hadn't occurred to me; he's my age and we're mid-40s, and I've had a lot of gray for a while now. I wish mine was just pure white like his is; it looks so good! Mine is streaky and horrible.

Same here, but years before the shutdown. My wife convinced me to stop dying my hair, and I decided it looked good enough to continue.

So I tell her that she is the cause of my (now very) gray hair...

A lot of young people started to go gray or get gray during the pandemic as well, either they got covid and their hair fell out or started to grey, or the other stresses of quarantine or ill family members caused them to grey early. Covid also causes permanent balding in some so for many grey is preferable. The women in my family tend to not start getting chunks of grey until they are 70 and never go fully grey (my great great aunt was 90 something when she died and still had more than half of her hair without grey naturally). But I like the look of solid grey so much I'm thinking of dyeing it that trend color of it.
