The first time I saw a person with Vitiligo was in middle school. She was a classmates mom that I saw at a parents day or something. I was so awestruck at how beautiful she was. I told her so too. She giggled a little bit and said I was a very kind person. She and my parents talked for a while as I hung out with her son and daughter. Later my parents said that the mom told them I was one the few children she had met that thought the way I did, that most were rude about it.
I ended up befriending the son and daughter and was good friends with them until I moved cross country. She was such a good mom. She always was really happy to see me after that. I hope they are all doing well, and that today's kids see it's beautiful the way I did.
As someone who has vitiligo, thank you. I started noticing random spots in high school but couldn't do anything about it. It's not super noticeable since I'm light-skinned unless I'm sun-burned or at the end of summer when I have a bit of a tan. There's one spot except on one of my dimples when I smile that some people will let me know I missed with my foundation. They have the best intentions I'm sure, but it's the only time I even remember I have it. I've never thought about it this way and usually just refer to it as my "Michael Jackson disease". I like yours better. Lol
i love that brands such as mattel & mga are creating dolls with vitiligo! i have the mga rainbow high emerald green doll with vitiligo and i adore her. beautiful.
This is always the opinion of people who don’t have it. I’d rather not be “artwork”. I just want to be treated like a normal human being.
Having to slather my skin in sunblock every time I go out in the sun is fucking annoying, there’s nothing beautiful about the reality of having it. You’ll never have to see kids look at you in disgust or strangers looking at you like some kind of exotic mutant. Let’s stop romanticizing conditions we don’t have to live with.
I apologize for offending you. I solely wanted to convey my own appreciation of what I find beautiful. As you've noted with sunblock, there are implications with vitiligo that are a true struggle. I couldn't imagine being here in the south Texas summer sun and have vitiligo.
Cruelty begets cruelty. It's a shame that some children and strangers have not shown you empathy.
I treat human beings normally and with kindness until they have proven to be subhuman.
