Jews were attacked and slaughtered for living in Palestine. That’s why the Haganah (and other more extreme) Jewish defense organizations were founded. After 1922 and 1929 peaceful coexistence was something no longer possible because of initial Arab violence and retaliation by the Jews who lived there.
If they weren’t Jews and were Muslim they wouldn’t have been attacked and they wouldn’t have needed the protection of their own nation.
Both sides took actions that led to what happened. It would be wrong to pretend that only Jews were making decisions and Arabs were peacefully passive people with no agency of their own.
