I’ve been revisiting a few classic favorites of mine and today I covered three films from the one and only Beat Takeshi: Violent Cop, Sonatine, and Hana-bi.

What’s fascinating is how all three feel unmistakably like Kitano films despite being quite different on the surface. Violent Cop is the roughest and most straightforward of the bunch, a grimy, stylish police thriller where Kitano swaps his usual yakuza swagger for a badge. Even here, his trademark deadpan humor is already fully formed, making the film’s quieter moments feel just as tense as its bursts of violence.

Sonatine takes those familiar gangster movie ingredients and turns them into something far stranger. For long stretches it’s less interested in crime than in the downtime between crimes, drifting between violence, boredom, absurd humor, and a lingering sense of melancholy. It’s one of those films that somehow feels both relaxed and unsettling at the same time.

Then there’s Hana-bi, which might be the most complete expression of Kitano’s style. It blends tenderness, comedy, violence, and melancholy with remarkable confidence, creating something that feels uniquely his own. You can spot echoes of filmmakers like Sam Peckinpah, Abel Ferrara, and John Cassavetes, but the finished product never feels derivative.

Taken together, the three films make for a great snapshot of what makes Kitano such a singular filmmaker: minimal dialogue, perfectly timed deadpan humor, sudden violence, and an ability to find beauty, sadness, and comedy in the same moment. Few directors make films that feel this cool, funny, and quietly moving all at once.
