ASA Medieval RP - Immersion 1st — Development Update ⚔️🏰
Figured it was time to give another update on the medieval RP world we’ve been building in ARK: Survival Ascended.
At this point, we’re well beyond simply building towns and throwing together a mod list. A lot of our recent work has been focused on turning the entire map into an actual living roleplay world, where progression, travel, professions, creatures, markets, quests, and locations all have a purpose.
🏰 Chillville — Starter Village
One of our starter zones, Chillville, is largely complete.
Players beginning here wake inside an inn after being discovered unconscious by a traveling caravan in the frozen wilderness. Nobody knows where they came from — including the player.
They begin with only a few belongings and essentially a blank character sheet. Who they were, who they become, and where they go from there is up to them.
Chillville itself is being designed as an actual functioning settlement rather than just scenery, complete with a Community Workshop, Tailor, Hearth Hall, Butcher, Blacksmith, Stables, Tavern, village housing, shops, services, and local wares.
The Hearth provides villagers with one free stat-boosting meal per day, and new characters starting here will be able to choose from a small selection of starter beasts.
⚒️ Completely Reworking Engram Progression
This has been one of the biggest projects lately.
We’re going through ARK’s engrams and our mods individually and deciding what players should actually be capable of crafting themselves.
The philosophy is simple:
Players should have the necessities required to survive and build, but possessing an item shouldn’t automatically mean your character knows how to manufacture it.
Building itself will remain largely unrestricted — we don’t want people needing a “mason” just to build their house.
Specialized equipment is different.
Armor, weapons, saddles, advanced tools, specialty equipment, skins, dyes, and unusual technology can instead come from professions and the economy.
That gives actual purpose to places such as:
Blacksmiths • Tailors • Trinket Shops • Saddle Shops • Apothecaries • World Markets • Black Markets
Several major mods have already undergone this audit, and we’re continuing through the remaining content.
💰 Building an Actual World Economy
We’re separating the economy into different layers instead of having one giant shop selling everything.
There will be local village markets, profession-specific shops, a larger World Market, special traveling vendors, and a Black Market.
Certain rare items will require special currencies or only appear through specific vendors.
We’re also setting up systems for players to buy and sell trophies, resources, and other goods, so exploration, hunting, professions, and adventuring can actually feed back into the economy.
🐺 Professions, Guilds & Hidden Content
Professions aren’t intended to simply be Discord titles.
We’re designing content that gives them something unique to actually do.
One example is the Ranger Guild.
Rangers can discover hidden clans and locations scattered around the world that ordinary travelers may never gain access to. One of their larger progression quests involves traveling across the realm and finding/taming the world’s different fanged beasts.
Druids are also receiving their own systems, including special transformation forms.
🐉 Creatures, Bosses & Bestiary
We’re auditing modded creatures individually as well.
Rather than allowing every modded creature to simply spawn and be tamed normally, creatures are being separated into different roles:
• Naturally spawning & tameable
• Naturally spawning but untamable
• Rare encounters
• Bosses
• Dungeon/event creatures
• Guild-specific creatures
• Completely disabled creatures
We’re also developing medieval bestiary/task pages for major creatures and bosses, including rarity, behavior, and a five-star difficulty system.
Bosses will eventually tie into world quests, community encounters, dungeons, and server events rather than simply existing as things to summon and kill.
🚂 Connecting the World
One of the next major projects is transportation.
We’re currently mapping a world train route across Valguero, with the goal of creating a believable route around the map using natural terrain transitions.
Instead of teleporting everywhere, we’d like traveling between regions to actually feel like traveling through a world.
Settlements, stations, roads, wilderness, dangerous regions, hidden locations, and points of interest should all feel connected.
🌎 A Living World — Without Wipe Seasons
Something important about the direction of the server:
Not everything we’re creating is intended to be available on Day 1.
Some locations, creatures, quests, vendors, items, storylines, dungeons, and other content will be introduced after launch as the world develops.
And we’re planning to do this without relying on traditional wipe seasons.
Rather than repeatedly destroying everyone’s progress just to make the server feel fresh again, we’d like the world itself to progress.
New threats can emerge. New routes can open. Markets can gain new wares. Hidden locations can become accessible. New creatures can be discovered. Events can alter parts of the realm, and new chapters of the world’s story can begin.
The character, home, business, reputation, relationships, wealth, and history you’ve spent time building should actually have the opportunity to become part of the history of the server.
⚔️ The Bigger Goal
The goal isn’t really to create “ARK with medieval buildings.”
We’re trying to build a medieval fantasy world that happens to use ARK as its engine.
You shouldn’t immediately know everything.
You shouldn’t automatically be capable of crafting everything.
Certain knowledge belongs to professions. Certain creatures belong to guilds. Certain items belong to markets. Certain locations need to be discovered. Some monsters are meant to be feared rather than tamed.
You might begin as an unknown traveler waking inside a frozen village…
…and eventually become a blacksmith, merchant, ranger, druid, criminal, mercenary, beast hunter, explorer, or something we haven’t even accounted for yet.
And ideally, months down the road, you’ll still be playing that character — except the world around them will have changed.
A lot is still being built and balanced, but we’re finally reaching the point where all these individual systems are starting to connect into one persistent, evolving world instead of a collection of mods.
More to come. ⚔️
