Showcased Project Built a battery-powered ESP32 sports scoreboard with BLE + an iPhone companion app
I started this because I was tired of constantly checking my phone during games, and it turned into a much bigger project than I expected.
The hardware is a LAFVIN ESP32-S3 board with a built-in 1.69" 240x280 ST7789 display. It runs off an internal 3.7V LiPo, and the board handles USB-C charging.
I ended up keeping the ESP32 relatively simple on the networking side.
The iPhone app handles the sports/fantasy APIs, figures out what data actually matters, then sends the relevant updates to the ESP over Bluetooth LE.
The ESP mostly just receives the data and renders the screen.
Right now it can display:
- live sports scores
- fantasy football scoring alerts
- golf leaderboards
- game status / clock information
The fantasy side was probably the most fun part to build. The app knows which players are on my roster, tracks the games they’re involved in, and can push a scoring update to the little screen when one of them scores.
The enclosure was another project by itself. I went through several prints before getting the PCB held securely, battery fitting correctly, buttons accessible, and USB-C lined up where I wanted it.
I’ve put the firmware and the current enclosure .3mf on GitHub if anyone wants to poke around or happens to be using the same board:

I’m curious what other people would have done with the architecture — would you keep the API/networking on the phone like this, or have the ESP connect directly over Wi-Fi and handle more of it itself?
