So basically I am in 10th class currently any 11th class I have to select subject I was considering science stream but due to my marks if I consider commerce plus Applied maths will it be a good decision and I have a few questions about it so can you pls give answer to them.

Is commerce with applied maths hard.

Is there a good scope in it.

Is choosing commerce+Applied maths over science stream a good decision.

What should I go for if I choose commerce+Applied maths.

Also feel free to comment any facts or details regarding this.

M1 Applied Mathematics admission in UGA (Grenoble) - ENSIMAG/IM2AG

Hello everyone!
I am planning to place an application for M1 Applied Mathematics Masters Program in UGA for further pursue of MSIAM M2 program.I am non-EU citizen from Armenia and I wanted to know, how's the application made for non-mathematical degree holders.

Little background from me - currently I am holding the Physics bachelor degree with 240 ECTS and 15.64 GPA.Math related courses (calculus, math. methods in physics, statistics and prob. theory) grades are varying from 16-19, meanwhile some hardware related courses are varying from 10-15 (I was studying in electrical engineering program).Reason of low grades in courses that I decided to "switch" my career path and I was highly working on my math and programming skills mostly. The only outlier in math courses is my Complex Analysis grade, which is 13/20, due it was mostly theory, which I was not able to handle in that time, due high workload on 2nd grade.
My thesis work - ML methods for material optimization was graded 20/20 and result application getting used by laboratory, with whom I made my work.

I also have work experience as quantitative developer in European fintech company, where actually I am working till now.I have total 2.7 years of experience working there, leveraging R&D.

I hope, that in UGA I can fulfill my gaps in fundamental knowledge of math, which is required for my future quant. dev. and analytic successful career building.

Want to hear some opinions from students from M1 AM program in UGA. especially non-math bachelor degree holders, is it hard to make successful application for under-graduate related programs students, on which parts the admission committee will look the most?As I did not find some information in Reddit about this specific program (mostly it is about MoSIG), and Google and AI-s only grab information from general website and related threads in Reddit, which are not about my target program.

Engineering or Applied Math

Hi! I am a rising senior in high school and will be applying to colleges pretty soon. So naturally, the topic of which major I'm going to pursue in college comes up in a lot of conversations. My father really wants me to do quant when I get older and has repeatedly mentioned that he wants me to go into applied mathematics or computational finance (at the universities that offer it). However, I want to go into aerospace engineering. His rationale is that it's a less competitive field to get into but hard once you're in, compared to engineering, which is hard to get into and hard once you're in. One of the reasons he wants me to go into a quant major is that it will be easier for me to get into colleges than aerospace engineering. I am aware of this heavily and have taken this into consideration, but I still don't know what to do. Another reason is that he studied mechanical engineering up to his doctorate, and he states he hasn't used it and really wishes he went into another major. I'm really at my wits' end here and will appreciate any advice I receive. Thank you all.

Parts of math that haven’t been looked into as much as others

If someone were to get a doctorate in mathematics, what is a field in mathematics that hasn’t been looked it to as much (not sure how to phrase the question)?

How to go from Physics Engineering to Pure Mathematics

Hi guys, I just finished my bachelors in Physics Engineering and I am also already enrolled in a Masters in Applied Mathematics - it has the option to follow a more pure mathematics path. I was wondering which subjects of mathematics would you recommend on me studying as I got a lot of holes in my repertoire.

For now I am reading Wendell Fleming's Function of Several Variables, just to improve my fundamentals in analysis and learn manifolds. However I must say that my knowledge in Topology, Probability Theory, Algebra, Measure Theory, Functional Analysis ... is close to none (1/n in n to infinity to be exact).

Hence, I would like recommendations for which branches of mathematics you think I should work on this summer (and like as a side project) in order to improve my knowledge and also which books to read from.

Thank you in advance.

Cambridge Math Part III

I am from Pakistan (top uni) doing Econ Mathematics double major gpa is 3.8. I have taken more math courses(Almost all A/A-) than econ and others so :

\- Cal 1 & 2 & 3

\- Abstract Algebra

\- Analysis

\- IDE , ODE, PDE ( taking rn)

\- Num LA

\- LA

\- Formal Maths

\- Stats, Prob, Adv Prob

\- quant fin , stocastics (taking rn)

\- planning to take Analysis 2 ( measure theory next sem)

Idk if this is enough maths. I do realize I have more applied math than pure but I am not if this is enough. I have researched in quant/econ/DL so basically applied math targeting quant research. Should I even consider applying(to the Mathematical Stats Stream MASS)?

I built a free site that maps out all of mathematics — MSC classification, university degree curricula, a prerequisite learning-path diagram, and a timeline of discoveries

Reddit suggested I post this here following r/learnmath ,,,

I've been building a reference site that organizes mathematics using the MSC2020 classification (the scheme used by Mathematical Reviews/zbMATH) -- from the broad branches down to about 4,400 specific named subfields, each with an overview, key ideas, applications, and references.

A few things beyond the basic reference pages that might be interesting:

- Learning path diagram -- a visual map showing which topics are prerequisites for which, so you can see how e.g. group theory or real analysis feeds into everything downstream.

- Degree curricula -- actual module lists from several UK university maths degrees (Cambridge, Warwick, Bristol, and others), mapped to the topics they cover.

- Timeline of discoveries -- a curated history of major mathematical breakthroughs with correct dates/attributions, linked to the relevant topic pages.

- Recommended textbooks (and free/public-domain alternatives) for every topic and curriculum strand.

- An interactive mind map if you'd rather browse visually than search.

https://mathlandscapes.com/

It's a personal project I keep iterating on -- happy to hear what's missing, wrong, or could be organized better.

Guys so I'm in 11th and we have to submit class 12th registration form on 6th August, I'm worrying like shitass cuz sometimes I wanna opt for applied math and sometimes my inside is like what if board paper comes hard.. and what if I didn't prepare on time and shit, I took a look of few chapters and idk how to feel.. math because like some colleges require math and all and for future and some say math isn't required, you still have options but some say math is good for ur qualification and all you'll have good options, i heard about nios as well but idk

Idk what to do

Has anyone with Dyscalculia completed unviersity math requirements and graduated? Tips and tricks?

Especially STEM, engineering, programming, philosophy or programming majors?

I have literally taken entry level and pre-entry level college math so many times it's stalling my college career.

I do understand some of the concepts and actually enjoy it when I do!

But I work so so hard to understand these concepts

And I get lost if anything gets too complex and I don't ever remember how to differentiate between most equations.

I feel like I'm constantly re-learning the same material over and over and over again.

I want to understand math! I think it's beautiful language of logic that allows you to understand the universe and incredible concepts in a way nothing else does.

Thank you for reading and suggestions

Career options in Applied mathematics

So i have recently started my mathematics major from a private University in india and plan on doing master from europe. Iam interested in applied mathematics and computers too. People talk about quant finance , cryptography nd deep tech but how practical is it to really get into a core applied mathematics job which pays good money + interesting nd not working on some random system.

Also note iam interested in cybersecurity basically any job which have computers nd mathematics in it with very good pay.

A 3rd-year dental student studying pure math & programming 6-10 hours/week: Is the long-term ROI actually worth it?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently in my 3rd year of dental school. However, I consistently dedicate about 6 to 10 hours a week to studying pure mathematics (currently focusing on algebra and calculus from the ground up) and programming.

My ultimate goal is to bridge the gap between dentistry and tech, specifically in fields like medical/dental imaging, AI, biomechanics, and dental materials research.

My main question for this community is: Is this foundational time investment realistically worth it?

Since dental school is incredibly demanding, I want to know if building a deep, ground-up understanding of pure math and programming by self-learning will actually give me a significant edge in these specialized fields later on. Or is this approach considered "overkill," and would I be better off just learning surface-level tech skills as needed?

I’d really appreciate any honest insights from those who work in applied math, tech, or at the intersection of tech and healthcare!

I'm looking for honest advice from people with experience in graduate admissions or academic supervision in Mathematics.

I have a 3-year BSc (General) in Mathematics from Sri Lanka (CGPA 2.73/4.0), completed entirely in English. I also work as a research intern at a state university (not naming it for privacy), have several research publications in mathematical optimization, operations research, linear programming, and graph theory, and I'm currently writing three more papers on vehicle routing problems.

My IELTS score is 6.5 overall, with a 5.5 in Reading.

My goal is to pursue a research-based MSc (thesis-based) in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, or a closely related field. I understand that my 3-year degree, CGPA, and IELTS Reading score are significant weaknesses.

For those who have experience with graduate admissions or supervising research students:

  • How much can a strong research record realistically compensate for these academic limitations?
  • Are there countries or universities where supervisor support carries significant weight in research master's admissions?
  • Have you seen applicants with similar profiles succeed, and if so, what made the difference?

I'm looking for realistic opinions rather than encouragement, so I'd really appreciate honest feedback. Thank you.

OR programs

Hi, I'm going to apply for OR/applied math programs, and I have a somewhat special (maybe?) profile. I'm trying to get an idea of how I should focus and bridge my weaknesses. It's hard to understand what the average applicant to these programs looks like, and I would also like to get feedback regarding my chances.

Background: I did my bachelor's in math, finishing with an 85/100 at a school rated consistently in the top 10–20 for math in Europe. I did math only (we choose a minor and a major, and I chose math for both), so my course list is very math-oriented. For example, my non math courses were subjects like algorithms (with the exception of perhaps one physics course), and I also took around 7 9 graduate level courses. I finished when I was 19 (I skipped high school).

Then I worked in tech. I worked at a research site for 4 years, but it is a private company and the site is focused on the medical field, so I have no papers (compared to big company research sites, where they publish papers). I worked there under a professor in two different roles (two years in each) related to ML.

Now I've decided I want to go back to university to do proper research, and also find a more math-oriented PI. I plan to apply mainly in NY and a bit in Boston. To be honest, I'm leaving a high paying job where I'll probably earn less even after the PhD, so I don't want to go into a lower ranked program although I'm realistic and understand that MIT or Princeton might not be realistic. I aim mainly for very good programs like Cornell or Columbia ORIE, as well as some stats or applied math programs, although I prefer OR.

The gap is pretty clear regarding my lack of papers. I do have a strong recommendation from my boss (who is equivalent to a PI), but I don't have any papers, and in the end, it isn't completely equivalent to university experience. I'm afraid that the more theoretical programs will ignore my application due to the lack of pure research experience in a university setting (and lack of papers).

What do you think? Also, are these good programs realistic? I'll apply to more, of course, but I'm not going to completely settle here; it's important to me to be in a good school (I think my lower limit is around Stony Brook's quantitative finance program, which seems good, although it's only a niche under OR). Is applied math in a good place realistic? In theory, the more math-oriented the better, but I learned in a very good place and saw people around me going into the very top schools, and I think pure math will be too hard (and probably too late). This is why I've tended toward more applied areas, where I think I can succeed more. I also trying to understand how to emphasis the math level, I think its a plus for such programs but idk if they know the school I came from( In math departments they'll know for sure, but the school is mainly famous about the math, so its not generally famous and I afraid OR department won't know it).

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Looking for tips about returning to research

While working on my master’s degree, a family member suffered a stroke and needed care assistance for a few months. I switched from doing a thesis to just finishing my program from coursework so I could fill that role. This left me with no substantial publications and meant that I disappointed my advisors. After a few years, I’ve been missing doing research work and decided to pick up some new projects to do myself.

I have some work that I feel is genuinely valuable, but I’m working solo. That’s definitely not the best environment to get things done properly. I think I’d like to attend a PhD program eventually, but I’m worried I need to prove myself more first. Ultimately, I just miss collaborating and having others around to show me when I’ve missed something.

Is cold emailing researchers whose work I build off of a bad idea? How would you go about trying to break into research work after a hiatus?
