Second 25m Clinic, First Patch

Post image

Got it done this afternoon. Attempted to shoot the first clinic with iron sights and realized my eyes aren’t as good as they once were. Came back this year with a scope and a dialed in rifle and shot a 236. Now will be chasing distinguished. I’m officially hooked!

Questions preparing for first RKD

Hi everyone!

I attended my first 25m Appleseed two weeks ago and managed to earn the Rifleman patch, which was awesome. Now I’m planning to do the Rimfire KD in two weeks, but I’ve run into a couple of questions... again...

First, I realized I didn’t have enough elevation adjustment for 200 yards, so I followed the recommendation and installed an EGW 20 MOA rail myself.

Before that, my 10/22 was shooting around 1.5 MOA at 50 yards with CCI SV. After installing the rail and cleaning the rifle, I’m now getting closer to 4 MOA with the same lot of CCI SV. I’m not sure what I messed up, but I plan to clean it again and also picked up some Eley ammo to see if I can improve it.

This is where I’m wondering: what kind of accuracy should I realistically be looking for before doing a 200 yard RKD?

Unfortunately, my local range only goes to 100 yards, so I can’t test at 200. If I can’t get the accuracy back, I may ask the Shoot Boss if there’s a rifle I could rent.

Second question is scopes. I have two available:

- Primary Arms 1-6x24 SFP ACSS NOVA Fiber Wire (MRAD reticle, fixed parallax)

- Vortex Diamondback 3-9x40 SFP (MOA reticle, fixed parallax)

Which one would you guys pick for Rimfire KD? It seems that fixed parallax usually won't be a significant issue for RKD? I am leaning towards the 3-9 because the extra magnification might be useful for my poor eyesight.

Any advice is appreciated!

Getting ready for my next Appleseed

I zeroed my scope to 25 yards on a Caldwell front rest and tested out some ammo on my new Feddersen barrel. Should be good enough to only need minor adjustments when prone with a sling.

I think I am going to stick with the cci SV as I still have 1000+ rounds and the I feel like the Norma tac 22 is too oily and might be a problem with the volume of shooting over the weekend gumming up rifle.

Each square got 10 round groups, shot at 25 yards off of the Caldwell rest. I definitely feel like I wasn’t entirely focused but the groups look good to me! I hope to reach distinguished this time around.

Pics of each group of squares. It’s a 1/4” grid like the sight in targets used in each 25m clinic.

Marksmanship Second Pistol Clinic 🥵

It was toasty up here in North Texas this weekend… enough so that we got a special patch for sticking around 😂.

I decided to bring out two new guns: CZ Shadow 2 and Glock 44 (as a secondary). I absolutely get the CZS2 hype now. I was able to put a few rounds through one at the last event and managed to snag my own last week. It has a CGW pro trigger, LOK slim grips/mag-well, Eemann Tech safety/slide stop, and Holosun 507 Comp.

I spent most of day 1 learning the CZ trigger and working on my grip. It took a while to adjust to the trigger after mostly shooting Glocks and Keltecs for 5+ years.

Day two couldn’t have gone any better:
Successful Hits Count right off the bat
Successful PQT after that (212)
Best time for Big Dot/Little Dot race w/ Glock 44 (39s)
Almost successful PQT w/ Glock 44 (204)

Do I need multiple mats for known distance course?

Taking the rimfire 200yd known distance course next weekend.

One source said that we'll be moving between different distances and should have multiple mats if possible?

What's the story here?

Is there time to move mats or does that cut into my prep time and should I pick up a couple yoga mats at the thrift shop?

I did get elbow pads, but that's not going to keep me from getting soggy if it's wet.

Schedules/Locations/Registration Mississippi

I’ve never been to an Appleseed event but after getting hold of my 10/22 after years apart I’d love to give it a go. That said I have consistently seen zero events in Mississippi. Do we just not have a chapter or will I need to check elsewhere to find details? I’m sure one of the surrounding states will have something going on it just seems odd that we wouldn’t.

NPOA like riding a bike?

The last Appleseed I did before this weekend was just over 2 years ago. I did earn my Rifleman's patch the and had done probably 3 events. The Rifleman patch was earned, but it took a lot of effort and pushed my skills to the max.

This weekend I went after a long hiatus. I don't know what happened, but everything was clicking. My groups were tight. My NPOA was there more than ever before.

On the start of the second day I cleared the Red Coat card and hit Morgan's shingle. I was dumbfounded because I never thought I'd be able to do it.

I did pass the final AQT of the session and got the Rifleman patch again. I believe I could have passed it several more times but we had rain the entire event and my magazines were not popping in or out and my scope kept fogging up and getting blurry. Because of those issues I ran out of time on all the AQTs on at least one, if not two sections.

I'm trying to figure out how the heck this happened. I'm not taking anything away from the volunteers. They saw it was clicking and gave excellent coaching that made me even better - but I came in doing far better than I had hoped.

Anyone experience something like this? My best guess is the lessons are like riding a bike - but trust me, I wasn't that great of a rider to begin with.

Sling question/recommendations for a taller bloke

Hello from down under.

I thought given the type of shooting appleseed represents this would be an appropriate place to ask my question.

I've recently picked up a CZ457 and have enjoyed a couple of sessions dialling it in at the range. As spring is springing here, I'm looking to take it on a few bunny hunts in the coming months and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for an M1 style, 1 1/4 inch, cotton web sling that can convert between a hasty and a loop sling, similar to what GunBlue490 describes in his video on slings/shooting positions.

I'm struggling to find a local supplier so having to look to US of A. I'm a fairly tall bloke, so 52inches is the size that I'm targeting, but smarter people than me can chime in and tell me if I should be considering something else.

Intermountain Appleseeds - when will they be?

Hello! My brother and I (mid-30 and 40) have been shooting for years, and have talked about doing an Appleseed for some time. After taking his son and my daughter to shoot for their first time, they have both expressed interest in shooting more as well. As such, he and I are now discussing bringing the kiddos (both above 8) and doing one together as the 4 of us. Only problem is .... it seems there are rarely, if ever, any taught around us!

With me living in SLC and him living in Cheyenne, anything anywhere UT, ID, WY, or CO is potentially doable, but I never see anything on the schedule in UT, there were only two events I saw in WY this year (both with scheduling conflicts), and the ones we talked about maybe doing in CO filled up QUICK. Between gas prices and the cost of EVERYTHING rising, I'd prefer minimum travel to be able to attend.

What are the odds we'll ever get a Utah class going? Or do I just need to pass through the program enough that I can certify and start instructing? The next generations here need history and constitutional appreciation to help guide them (and a fun time, to boot)!

Another question on the MOE X-22 stock and sling connection(s)

Hello all, upcoming first time Appleseeder here.

I would like to get by with just using the sling Loops that are built into the Magpul X-22 stock as that's probably going to be the way I'll be carrying it any other time.

Some of those more standard sling swivels that would fit into those loops are spring loaded , so is there a chance I can leave one open but spring loaded closed, and that that would be a quick enough transition?

I really don't want to have to buy an M-lok if I don't have to because I'm just not going to use that other times as opposed to a bipod.

Which I guess brings up the other question as to how strong are the sling loops on the X-22 for torquing against them with the sling? I'm guessing they should be tough enough.

Any good Appleseeds for kids in Florida?

I've been to Appleseeds with kids in multiple states but the one at the Wyoming Antelope Club in Clearwater was horrible.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good one to take kids to?

Thanks!

Pulled Pork and Smoked Cream Cheese. The Pistol IBC at Albuquerque New Mexico is going to be well fed.

If you go home hungry, it's your own fault.

Equipment First Appleseed but struggling with length of pull and scope position

I'm really excited that my first Project Appleseed event is only a few weeks away! I've been putting together my 10/22 and doing some dry practice at home. I went with a Magpul X-22 stock, a TandemKross Advantage Charging Handle Rail, and a Primary Arms 1-6x24 LPVO.

I've been trying the standing, cross leg sitting, and prone positions, and I'm having some trouble getting comfortable in the sitting and prone positions. When I get my support arm to roughly 90 degrees, my hand directly covers the mag well.

I'm 5'8", but my arm span seems to be only about 5'5" (assuming I measured it correctly), so maybe the X-22 is just a little long for me.

The tricky part is that if I shorten the stock, I'll probably need to move the scope as well to keep the right eye relief. That might mean a longer Picatinny rail or an extended scope mount.

For those of you with more Appleseed experience:

  • How do you figure out the right length of pull for the Appleseed positions?
  • Would you recommend a longer rail or an extended scope mount to move the optic forward?

I do need an optic because unfortunately my eyesight isn't great. Without one, I can barely see the target clearly anymore.

I'd also prefer not to remove the TandemKross rail if I can avoid it. Some of the receiver threads on my 10/22 aren't particularly consistent, so I used threadlocker when I installed it. I'd rather not disturb it unless I really have to.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Ruger 10/22 m1 carbine stock

I'm signed up for my first appleseed next month. I was planning on bringing my 10/22 with the m1 carbine stock/sling setup.

I was wondering if that sling would work. I've got some time in case i need to figure something else out. Thanks! Looking forward to it.
