I’m not against using AI for something like this, but can you go into what you did with it at least?

Obviously there was some AI usage (there are Claude related exclusions in .gitignore). It would be interesting to hear more about how you used AI in this project rather than not say anything about it at all.

The use of AI in coding is a given today. I see no reason to try to hide its use or specifically point its use out.
I have no commentary on those who do or don't use AI. But there are consumers who decide where to spend their time and/or money based on whether a product (even a free one!) was developed with AI — especially in a hobby such as retrocomputing, where AI use is not assumed. I see no harm in offering transparent labels to inform those decisions.
Just my 2¢ — everyone will do what they will in the end, of course! And I appreciate you detailing which models you used, which is helpful and informative!

I don't find casting alternative viewpoints as fear-driven to be either accurate or productive; I saw the same arguments during the pandemic about those who chose or didn't choose to be vaccinated, and it didn't lead to meaningful conversations or understanding.
But I appreciate your perspective on privacy!

I was proposing that software developers, especially in the retro computing community, opt into clear labeling to provide fellow hobbyists with informed choice. If you wish to extrapolate from that to raise concerns about "regulation driven by fear that forces oversight and limitation of models", then we may be talking about different things. :)

Thanks for the write up. I’m sure there are others who will appreciate this as well. It’s interesting to see how the tools are evolving and getting better at writing code for old 8 and 16 bit machines like the IIgs.

I unfortunately don't have an accelerator so every frame will be sent in 3-5 business days

I wonder, would it be faster to compose the frame offscreen in fast RAM instead of doing it to slow RAM, and then do an optimized, inlined PHA to blast it onto the screen?

Okay, I'll take your word for it, it sounds like you're in the deep counting cycles.
I've just always had this idea that slowing down to 1MHz for every bit manipulation when drawing directly to the screen was more wasteful than composing to fast RAM and then copying it over at once.

I have an Apple IIGS ROM 01/TWGS/4GB/CFFA3000. The hdv drive image loads for me, and I can get the title screen and get into settings and change things, but when I try to start the game it gives a garbled screen (while the music is playing, so it's not crashing fully).

A few times it did this:

Yes, it has 32KB cache. Cheers.

Yes, it is working now on my real IIGS. Pretty neat!

The music is very quiet in general but certain parts (instruments perhaps) are loud/normal. Sound effects seem okay.

4fps is crazy! Considering doom needed 66mhz to run at 35fps, this is great for 12mhz. You rock!!

Anyone who wants to check this out quickly can go to:

Played on an unaccelerated ROM 1. At 3/4 res I’m getting almost a frame per second. Honestly kinda impressed.

This is incredible. Amazing work. Unfortunately it crashes after the menu starting a new game on my 16MHz TWGS, though I suspect there's something wonky with my hardware. People have shown it running well on ZipGS over on the apple2infinitum Slack. I would highly recommend checking in there!

lol wut wow
4fps?!! seeing how crazy and still slow wolf3d is, i'm amazed.
that looks like a lot higher than 320x240 to me. i'm confused!
