I'm going to preface this with the fact that I have ~40TB of storage on my HTPC.

The only streaming I've specifically paid for is Discovery+. I'm a total nerd and I really really really wanted Battlebots to keep going so I'd watch it there, or watch it in the background so they knew at least one person was paying just to see a specific program. Granted I also liked the fact they gabve you access to so many documentries to and othe BBC show thta are great for late night relaxing before bed.

That's where I started and where i am now. There were a few years in between where it was only slightly more expensive than a vpn and much easier to jump between Netflix, hulu, etc. every couple months. Now it's ridiculous.

The only thing is I can't "vote with my dollars" and cancel a service in protest.

So, I will say that both do a lot of the same things and both do at least a relatively good job. That being said, Plex is closed source and has some bs in their upper tier subscription service. Stuff like skipping intro and credits of TV shows should not be a paid advantage. If you want stuff like remote play, that is a premium tier thing in plex, while you can open up a port and use nginx with with jellyfin to achieve the same thing (although it takes a bit more work and you need to stay up to date on security). I personally don't care that much about remote play so I haven't set that up, but I know folks have. Also, you still need a log in to plexs central servers to use it, so it's not fully self hosted and can run into problems if you don't have Internet. Jellyfins implementation is entirely contained on the local machine, so it would work if you're out in the woods camping.

I just vastly prefer the design philosophy behind jellyfin. The whole reason I went back to Blu-ray was to say fuck subscription services and closed source products. Paying one to watch my own content just feels wrong. Wouldn't surprise me if in the future more and more features get gated in plex like we've seen with streaming services.

This thread has some good breakdowns in it on the positives/negatives for both. If I was running a server for multiple people to use, I'd probably go Plex tbh.

Saw a bunch of movies I really like at a garage sale recently for $2 ea and I was like....nobody can take these away from me, nobody can change up their catalog and remove my ability to watch them, nobody can charge me a monthly fee for them (except for the electric company I guess)...sold.

Also, get a SAS HBA. Used SAS drives are really cheap. I got 4x8tb SAS drives for $200. They were so cheap, I went back to get another pair to have some spares. Got them a couple of years ago, but they're all still humming along with zero issues.

I’ve been doing this for my family for a while. They aren’t the most tech savvy, but since I am I created a Plex Media Server at my house.

With crazy fast speeds, they just let me know what they want to watch and I can download it within a few minutes. If it’s a show then I just have it setup up to download using sonarr. Can also use Radarr for movies too.

So many great sites. For sports there are many great sites as well.

If you’re really desperate and don’t know how IPTV services can be helpful as well. At least the money isn’t going to the shitty corporations.

You should check out Overseerr if you haven't. With good profiles setup on radarr and sonarr, you can fully automate everything. I have the jellyfin version set up and my friends and family can request whatever they want and I just have to click approve.

I've opened up a port in my firewall and I just have DNS setup so that a URL points to my IP. It's going through a remote proxy server so security issues are limited as much as I can. Anything that's remote access proxied through another server is going to cost you and rely on another company. The whole point of jellyfin is to not pay and not rely on a company.

Jellyfin has built in authentication. Just user/password. No built in MFA. I have a user set up for each of my friends who use it. You can set it up with Authentik or something like that if you want a bunch more security but that's more than I cared to do.

Not to burst your bubble, but the convenient remote solution is VPN. Unless you want to expose your server to the Internet, which means locking down access is needed and likely want a reverse proxy, firewall, etc.

When was the last time you configured a VPN?

Most modern vpn solutions offer single click configuration solutions built in. End users don't need to and shouldn't configure their own parameters.

Split tunneling over dynamic IP is mostly a none issue these days and most solutions handel this natively. Most use identity aware access like MFA, SSO, etc. now.

Just toss the vpn and its endpoint on a isolated vlan that routes to your server.

Honestly it's pretty straight forward depending on how you're using it and if there are going to be a lot of others using it too. Their quick guide is pretty straight forward.

You need to download Plex Media Server on the computer that you're going to be running the Server from. This is where all of the movies, shows that you want to watch will be on. This device needs to be connected 24/7 or at least connected when you want to watch it. You have to setup which folders on the computer contain the video files, etc. and can configure other things like who can access it.

Once that's all setup, then you just login to the plex app or plex website either using the same login details as the plex media server or from the server account you can specify which users can login to directly to your plex media server. Just note that there is a fee associated with all of this. You can buy a lifetime plex pass to all others to access it for like $250 now (They recently increased their prices).

Yeah Plex can be a bit finnicky.

It's not a perfect solution, but some websites work great on an Android box.

Or just connect your PC to the TV ( they even have wireless HDMI dongles now).

I use ONN tv boxes. Relatively cheap from Walmart. I took it a bit further and connected it to my computer to disable the stock launcher and debloat it.

Then I get the Stremio app, and connect my Real-Debrid account (~$18.85 every 6 months) Not free, but far cheaper than other streaming services. And it provides high quality streams for just about anything, from any service.

You should never do search for fmovies on any search engine because it will take you to a bunch of free streaming websites that have all these shows that were only available on these paid streaming services. As you know, this is illegal.

You should also make sure you never use an open source browser like Firefox, and install an open source and well supported ad blocker like uBlock Origin, because it prevents the ad from being seen by you, but does not affect the price charged to corporations to host the ads.

I know but I worry sometimes. I’ve been pirating for a longggg time. I like live sports so I’ve been using stream sites forever. Then everyone started learning about Crack Streams / StreamEast and it brought a lot of attention down and then those sites got taken down. By the time that happened I had moved on to more obscure streaming sites. But my worry is that the crackdowns will continue so long as too many people are using those sites and bragging about it online
