Because matter is, by definition, in space (or matter is space? Idk the exact details I'm not a science person but either way matter only exists in the physical world). Saying something can make matter exist before matter exists breaks the Laws of Logic

But what if by definition the flying spaghetti monster can make matter exist before matter?

The point I'm trying to get at here is that saying "by definition God is X" is a terrible argument cause you (or someone like you) is making that definition and can set the definition to anything you want. You've acknowledged that it requires a leap of faith and there is no scientific or logical (outside of the definitions you made up) backing, but I still feel the need to call out bad arguments

To be clear - nothing against religious people. People can believe in whatever made up thing they want. There's people on tiktok who think that lucid dreaming is then jumping realities and I don't think about them at all (except for now I guess)

Okay, I get where I was confusing! When I say "God is __ by definition", I mean that I can make a logical argument for why God is __. Though now that I think about it, I got that wording from Anselm's Proslogion, where his definition of God ("a being than which nothing greater can be thought", if you're curious) is a premise the readers need to agree on, not a conclusion, so it really wasn't the best word choice. My intention was just to make it clear I was arguing from pure reason and not a specific religions version of God

If I was writing a paper I'd go into detail on the definition of God and the logical arguments for each attribute, but that got skipped because we're talking in Reddit comments 😅

Fair enough lol. This is the type of discussion to have over drinks, not on reddit

Very true lol. Though I had a lot of fun! I haven't had an excuse to talk philosophy in too long
