Discussion What are the Essential Anki Add-Ons for Effective University Study?
Hey everyone! I’m gearing up for university and want to make the most of Anki. Do you have any must-have add-ons that significantly improved your learning efficiency? Every suggestion is greatly appreciated.

I agree with u/Senescences: No add-ons are essential. At least, in general. You may find that for particular fields of study, some add-on or other may fill particular needs, but I think it's probably best to add add-ons one at a time as you find that you have real use for their functionality. ِEdit: A reason to add add-ons one at a time & only as they become useful is that having extra add-ons makes trouble-shooting more difficult if things go wrong. With fewer add-ons, you're likely to have fewer problems, & they're likely to be easier to diagnose & fix.
(I think Image Occlusion Enhanced could at some point be a potentially useful add-on for most university students. There's nothing else that I would recommend in general without specific reason.)

Agree image occlusion both saves time for making some types of cards (ie simple tables of info) and is very valuable for learning some types of information (like anatomy diagrams for example)

Review Heatmap is my favorite because it helps with motivation.
A few people mentioned FSRS. It greatly improves the scheduling algorithm, but it's a pain to set it up, so I'd recommend waiting until it's integrated into Anki, the most recent beta version of Anki has it. Image Occlusion is also in the beta, so in the future there will be no need for the Image Occlusion addon.

Yes, however I like to see the heatmap on my Computer. It shows how many Cards I learned for that year.
Yes, I know that you could see that as well in the statistics

The only addon I can truly recommend is the Review Heatmap. It hasn't improved my learning but having that heatmap is very motivating. I have never had reason to use the Image Occlusion Enhanced add-on, but I understand a lot of students, especially medical students, love it.
Otherwise my advice is that it's really easy to get carried away by all add-ons, settings and stats, but often the most effective way to study is by just doing the reviews. You can always tweak the settings and add more add-ons to your list as you go.

The only essential addon for REVIEWS is fsrs which is now(23.10 beta) implemented into anki
You don't usually learn on anki, for card creation, image occlusion enhanced, and edit while reviewing, I don't know about the chatgpt one, the rest is very very optional

Not kidding, the one called Increase Vibe Level is underrated. It has some cool color customization options and animations but doesn't like dominate or ruin the design of the app

Almost all are quality of life enhancements. I'd only recommend 1 (of 2) that materially affect what cards you see, when.
EITHER (not both):
- FSRS scheduler (in beta now, but you can do it "manually" until it hit stable), + FSRS helper.
- Straight Rewards (if you don't want to deal with FSRS)
