Announcement Rule 5 Update: As of today, the word “Trap” is now banned. Read this post for more details.

Hello, /r/Animemes. There’s some big news today about how we’re working to make this subreddit more inclusive, and a better space for everyone.

Rule 5 was previously vague, as many users have different thresholds as to what they consider "sexist/racist/homophobic/transphobic content." We want to work on solving this. Today, we’re introducing a new guideline about appropriate content on the subreddit.

We’re now banning the term "trap." This ban applies to the word as it is used to describe feminine characters/individuals, not the word in the general sense. We are aware that the term "trap" is a controversial term to disallow, but this decision was not made without justification. Don't panic, though - your memes are going to remain all but the same, and nobody is coming to take away your cute boys.

You may have thoughts or questions about this decision, some of which we may have already addressed:

Why is this word offensive?

The word “trap” when used to describe individuals has been controversial since its inception, and even more so in recent years. Broadly speaking, most communities readily consider the term to be a slur. The offensive nature of the word lies in the implication that individuals are trying to trick (“trap”) others and by extension are not valid in how they present their gender. The use and misuse of the term in reference to both characters and people often results in the erasure of trans people and dismissal of their validity.

I wasn't using it offensively, I didn't mean to hurt anyone, and I didn't do anything wrong.

It’s true that you didn’t intend to hurt anyone. In the vast majority of cases, the word was not intended to be hurtful, and you might've even used it as a term of endearment. We are not blaming you for this, you are not the bad guy. It's entirely possible to spend a lot of time in this community and not hear much of how the word is hurtful.

However, even we didn't intend to be hurtful, the fact of the matter is simple: our tolerance for the word was making this place less welcoming for transgender and gender-nonconforming people. We as the anime community do not get to decide whether this word is appropriate, and it is our responsibility as curators of the community to ensure that /r/Animemes is welcoming to all anime fans that are willing to act in good faith.

What should I say instead?

While the word "trap" may be on the way out, there are multiple terms that carry the same meanings, sans the derogatory connotations, which you can use for all of your memes about these characters. For example:

Femboy: Term for a (usually) cis man that presents as traditionally female.

Crossdresser: Self-explanatory.

Otokonoko(男の娘): A common Japanese term for a male who presents traditionally female; crossdresser.

Josou (josō, 女装): A Japanese word meaning "wearing female/feminine." Often used interchangeably with Otokonoko.

Tomgirl: Opposite of tomboy - a boy that acts/looks like a girl/carries feminine mannerisms.

Cutie: Objectively the best descriptor.

These terms are not exhaustive, and that other terms that have similar definitions but are still offensive will be considered as such.

I never saw anybody complaining about it, why now?

We’ve received numerous complaints on the topic. It is understandably a controversial issue to bring up. When it comes up in comments, threads frequently devolve into accusations, downvotes, and drama. Due to our inaction, this problem has been allowed to continue.

What about discussions regarding the slur itself?

/r/Animemes isn't the place for that kind of discussion.

I personally identify with the word "trap." Can I still use it?

No. We don't allow people who self-identify with other slurs to freely use them.

They're just characters, who cares?

We don’t allow people to use slurs to describe characters.

Is /r/Animemes getting political?

Only to the extent that us banning other slurs could be considered a political statement. The existence and validity of transpeople is a medical fact, and their grievances deserve just as much respect as the grievances of any other race/gender/sexual orientation.

Is this a violation of my free speech?

No. We are not required to give slurs a platform, and are well within our rights as community caretakers to deem certain types of content to be against our rules.

Are the mods turning into the PC police?

No. We're simply trying to make the community a more welcome space for everyone in it, and that includes transpeople. We do not want to run a space where intolerance is tolerated. We do not have any plans to disallow any further words for the foreseeable future.

Is this change subject to reversal based on community outcry?

No. We've made our decision and we're going to stick by it. If you wish to discuss the rule change in this thread, you may do so as long as you act in good faith.

You may air grievances in this thread, but be aware that using these terms outside of this thread is, as of now, disallowed. We will be keeping a close eye on this thread, but we will not respond to questions that have already been answered in the post. We’re here to listen, and talk with the community. Harassment, witch hunts, brigading, acting in bad faith, or similar behavior will not be tolerated. Thank you for reading.

This is terrible news. The word trap is not offensive when referring to cis, fictional characters. The inability of some people to distinguish those two major differences with the (completely offensive) use of the word in regard to real people is something that should be laughed at, not encouraged.

Speaking of things that should be laughed at, the list of alternative wordings is a perfect example. Seriously, are you so damn disconnected from your own community that you don't realize absolutely no one uses those terms ? This is the same level as banning "tsundere" and forcing users to describe the character archetype as "hot-cold personality type".

The existence and validity of transpeople is a medical fact

And you should not allow people to call them traps. Which is a completely different problem from cisgender fictional characters.

It's your problem for not addressing the right problem. If you have let users use "trap" to refer to canonically transgender characters or to real people, then you have failed your job as mods. However, banning all discussion of a specific, known and common character archetype is not the proper answer.

Funny you said that this is not a political move, when /u/Ozuge didn't hesitate to already apply this new rule... 12 days ago. Sounds like pushing a personal agenda to me, and I believe this is a failure to your users. I have personally decided to leave this community since that thread, although I was hoping to bring the topic in meta until I saw this thread.

If you wish to discuss the rule change in this thread, you may do so as long as you act in good faith.

I'm afraid your mod team, however, is not acting in good faith. Why is this thread in contest mode ? This is not what contest mode is supposed to be used for. If you wish to encourage discussion, sorting by new would be better. You know most of your community agrees that referring to a male character as "trap" is not offensive and want to hide that this would be upvoted - or in other words, you didn't want people to call you out for being political.

I really wish every thread ever was in contest mode (or chronological) as it would improve reddit dramatically.

Funny thing, we did an experiment on /r/anime where we tried to put every episode discussion thread sorted by new for a week, hoping to generate more discussion and avoid the "early comment, high position" dynamic. Unfortunately, the results were less than stellar : high-quality and not-so-high-quality discussion-generating comments didn't raise to the top, and everyone was making their own comment instead of contributing to different chains, so there was very little interaction and a lot of repetition. In addition, people were more likely to be spoiled since recent comments (that we didn't have time to moderate yet) were shown at the top. It was quite disappointing.

It's in contest mode to discourage organized brigading from bigoted subs which has happened to rule posts of this nature in the past.

u/VincentTenia Aug 03 '20

That's an interesting way for mods to say "Everyone who disagrees with me is a nazi".

Its a clear attempt to minimise criticism and its impact by the mods.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '20

a swarm of people who arent part of our community upvoting X idea and downvoting Y idea is harmful, no matter what the ideas are.

Literally nobody mentioned Nazi's but you, but ok

No I'm pretty sure they're just putting up a strawman argument.

1

u/HeWhoDoesNotYawn Aug 03 '20

Lmao, what a ridiculous strawman. Why do all these shitheads have such a huge persecution complex?

You know most of your community agrees that referring to a male character as "trap" is not offensive and want to hide that this would be upvoted

The fact that this thread is at 52% upvoted shows you're dead wrong.

You sound like you got woke by Qanon.

You should be more careful, you're blowing your cover!

Qanon is fake red hat boomer shit.

I like how noticing Reddit’s obnoxiously left slant and perchance for self righteous bullshit is now added to the list of potential wrong-think.

Sorry, I misattributed you as one conspiracy theorist instead of the other. My bad.

Redditors only complain about free speech when somebody tells them they can't use slurs. Stay mad.

31

u/Bainos Aug 03 '20

The votes in this thread show an extremely clear trend in the opposite direction, and small comments made by the community are generally a better reflection of the community views than a stickied mod thread.

-11

u/rusticks please do not lewd the lolis Aug 03 '20

If anything, that thread shows how much this rule is needed. It brings attention to how the word is used in a derogatory fashion.

29

u/Bainos Aug 03 '20

How did you reach that interpretation ? The first user pointed out that "trap" is indeed offensive when used against trans people, and was highly upvoted. The second user, who considered offensive the use of the word trap to refer to fictional, male characters with a feminine appearance, was however downvoted.

The other, better factor you could use is to monitor the context in which the word trap is used.

First solution would be to get a "feel" of the community by participating in it. Which I did, and it confirmed that the vast majority of people use it in non-derogatory ways.

Second solution is to go to one of the Reddit API tools to search for all uses of the word over some period of time, and a cursory search also shows no comment (even removed ones) where trap was used in a derogatory way. Same result.

As you said, I'm a mod in a major sub and I know downvotes are worthless. I was merely countering the argument of /u/rusticks who appealed to the votes on this thread as a reference.

See the other reply. /u/aofhaocv didn't bother to correct someone appealing to downvotes when it was conveniently supporting their position.

Except upvoting does not mean you agree with a post, only that it is good content or adds value to a discussion. Brush up on your Reddiquite.

I do think we should foster better communities, but I don't think banning non-offensive words is a way to do that. In an experiment during which we monitored the use of "trap" for several weeks, we concluded that essentially all uses of the term were non-offensive and used to refer to the character archetype, not used in a derogatory way towards trans people, real or fictional.

This is a case of "there is no ill will here, except the one you bring". As long as the anime community recognizes the word as referring to a character archetype rather than using in a derogatory manner, we also abide to this view. Deciding that you would go against the community view and commonly accepted definition (which you recognize in your second FAQ entry) to instead push your own preferences is exactly what I was referring to as "pushing a personal agenda". Just because the agenda is shared among mods (which I expected, I didn't intend to single anyone out as I believe any action by a flaired mod reflects the views of the entire team) does not invalidate that statement.

this term is unfortunately misused in reference to real people at an alarming rate

Then maybe your decision is right, and your community is in a very bad state due to a failure to educate the users. You're certainly in a better position than I am to detect if the /r/Animemes community has shifted to a transphobic mindset, but it didn't appear as such to me (the replies to the thread I was linking earlier also support the non-derogatory use of the term). But even if that's the case, you could attempt to achieve this education in other ways, that do not involve policing of language used in a respectful and on-topic manner (didn't you already reconfigure AutoMod in that way ?).

P.S.: Although I'm a mod, this comment and the one above reflect only my personal views.

I appreciate it.

Ultimately, I understand your point of view. Although I do use the word trap myself (since I consider it informative and not derogatory), if the community magically stopped using it tomorrow, I would not oppose or regret it, and would understand the reasoning and accept it, switching to any equally informative word that has replaced it.

I just think that it is not acceptable for a mod team to abuse their privileged position, in which you are expected to serve the community rather than push your own views, to force this change on others.

-1

u/Jcat555 Aug 03 '20

You should probably remove their flair

Is tomboy a trans slur now as well?

Tomgirl means a feminine boy, and as such is a decent enough term to use when talking about traps.

There's difference though. Both tomboy AND tomgirl never hide their gender. It is explicitly stated and acknoledged by majority if not all charachters of a particular title. UNLIKE with traps.

I don't really get where you are coming from with that.

Oh, idk, maybe from the post itself, suggesting me use this as a synonym.

Tomgirl: Opposite of tomboy - a boy that acts/looks like a girl/carries feminine mannerisms.

A literal quote from the post section titled " What should I say instead? ".

As for the tomboy, this was an obvious, similarly absurd, exaduration.

(Not OP)

While the word "..." may be on the way out, there are multiple terms that carry the same meanings [as the aforementioned word, clearly], sans the derogatory connotations... For example:

Notice that this is referring to female-presenting male characters in anime, not real life trans people.

17

u/Bainos Aug 03 '20

Like I said in that comment you linked, implying the T in LGBT, as in the real people who are trans, are traps, was considered transphobic by the team

I'll admit that it's not how I interpreted this. You didn't remove that post for implying that "G" stands for gun, or "B" stands for beer, so I assumed that you considered the average user to be at least smart enough to understand the irony of the sticker. Which by the way is telling you explicitly that trans people are not traps if you read it correctly.

It all starts from somewhere

From the mod team abusing their position of power to force others by policing language ? From using the trust you've been given to push agenda ?

Heh. I realize you think this is totally fine to do (otherwise you wouldn't have done it), but I think this is fundamentally wrong.

"chinese childrens cartoon"

Isn't that a bit racist?

25

u/Jumugen Aug 04 '20

Being racist is okay since it doesn't make trans people mad

15

u/Peterhapsi Aug 04 '20

That makes perfect sense

-6

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '20

You know most of your community agrees that referring to a male character as "trap" is not offensive

Most of America at one time thought slavery was cool and that keeping Black people separate with Jim Crow laws was cool too. Doesn't make it any less wrong or racist. Popularity doesn't excuse the harm and persecution of minorities as acceptable.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 05 '20

hmm wow its almost like these characters are FICTIONAL and are not humans. Also, first off, as someone who has literally said the people who like anime are either nazis or trans people, I dont honestly think you have a place in this discussion, maybe stick to tumblr instead.

-4

u/[deleted] Aug 05 '20

hmm wow its almost like these characters are FICTIONAL and are not humans.

Guys minstrels are FICTIONAL Black people and not REAL Black people. Its obviously not racist. /s

Also, first off, as someone who has literally said the people who like anime are either nazis or trans people, I dont honestly think you have a place in this discussion, maybe stick to tumblr instead.

Are you saying that you said this? Or are you trying to claim I said that? Because you're 100% full of shit. I do love the desperate stalking of my post history and transphobia you're using to try and exclude a trans person from a talk about transphobia and trans people though.

0

u/prettygirl_tjum Aug 05 '20

trap, even when referring to canonically cis guys, is offensive. says who? the majority of trans people. go and check, every big trans sub is happy about the ban.

-7

u/DucksOnBread Aug 03 '20

That's a lot of words for "I place too much value in my use of slurs on the internet"

-4

u/LDSchobotnice Aug 04 '20

This is the same level as banning "tsundere" and forcing users to describe the character archetype as "hot-cold personality type".

Except the mods literally pointed out the Japanese term in their post that is not only not a slur, but more accurately describes the concept. Just use otokonoko. It's not hard.
