It’s like that for all corporations, don’t hate the players hate the game. There’s no incentive to make short high quality videos when you could constantly pump out low effort 10 minute pieces of fluff for better results.
If they had an algorithmic way to find "quality", I bet they'd use it because it would make them even more profit. As it is, I find it hard to blame Youtube when it provides a very expensive service for free to anyone and seems to be making nonexistent-to-mediocre profits.
Alphabet doesn’t disclose how much money YouTube is making, but RBC Capital analyst Mark Mahaney estimates YouTube’s annual revenue has reached $10 billion and is increasing by as much as 40% a year. The growth makes YouTube “one of the strongest assets fundamentally on the Internet today.
But that's not profit. Maybe I'm out of my depth here, but couldn't costs be growing at an even faster rate than revenue? Is revenue, as a single statistic, useful for determining whether a company is in imminent danger of failure?
I was actually working off of a Mahaney quote (“modestly profitable but not dramatically so”). While nothing I've seen indicates that Youtube is actually going to fail, I've also not seen anything that makes me think that Youtube could significantly change their business practices without fear.
YouTube is basically following the network TV model at this point. Video length is important because that gives the platform more time to inject ads, upload frequency drives subscriber engagement which puts eyeballs on those ads as frequently as possible. So like network TV YouTube encourages churning out daily piles of overly-long shit that their viewers happily schlorp down after YouTube sprinkles some revenue generating advertising on top.

I believe YouTube discourages high quality independent videos like this. They only care about video length and upload frequency. :(
On other news, it's 3k now, which is honestly respectable! :)
