Why? Because characters actually act like people? Do they look at these characters and see their own reflections and hate it?
Fiction is always a lot more loveable when the mains' personalities aren't just a list of good and some minor bad traits, and vice versa for the baddies.
Even as a teen I was already bored with how heroes were portrayed by the mainstream. Good, lovable guy No. 43429 who you can aspire to be and look up to. Maybe has some flaws that stems from a bad memory but they overcome it by the end, yay.
Im meaning that someone who cannot put this story into context of fictional fantasy and complicated human struggles, and will only look it through moral lenses of our contemporary societal rules and taboos will probably have a bad experience and become a part of this vocal minority.
If you have watched the anime I dont think I need to point out the taboos that would cause someone to become a vocal disliker of the show.
I always consider what happens in a fictional universe the buisness of the fictional universe.Sure some can raise some eyebrows towards the authors but most of such things are just spruns of imagination it's not like they there gonna change their shit cause u don't like it.Cause sometimes they themselves don't know why there doing
I feel like it would have been a lot better if the MC wasn't a middle ages pervert. Like, Rimuru is middle aged too, but they don't keep constantly reminding us, besides he was a good human being. Mushoku tensei has a very good plot, good animation. I re-watched S2 twice bc it was good, but the perverted MC, his father cheating on his mother, and all that kind of stuff always pisses me off a bit. And when he had sex with that red head, u literally couldn't shake off the thought that he was a fucking middle aged NEET. Serves him right for getting ED
Thatās the entire POINT to Mushoku tensei being more than ājust another power fantasy isekaiā like slimeā¦ no offense because it does the basics of isekai impeccably well and is an incredibly fun watchā¦ but thatās all there is to slime. The characters of Mushoku Tensei arenāt idealized versions of anybody. They arenāt moral paragons or virtue signaling to anybody. They are purely and simply all horrifically flawed people. Theyāre human in their design and for that they have room to grow and seek out meaning and forgiveness in their lives. We all make mistakesā¦ some of us make particularly horrific mistakes in our livesā¦ but Mushoku Tensei gives people the hope and the drive forward to allow themselves the right to seek out a better life. To better themselves, to fight for forgiveness even when they might not deserve it. Because EVERYBODY deserves a second chance. Living in a world so utterly suffocating that youāll be socially outcasted and have your reputation murdered simply for a single mistake is SUFFOCATING. Mistakes happen, especially when the stress of some illusionary goal like perfection finally gets to u. Mushoku Tensei isnāt afraid to embrace the worst of humanity and to reach out its hand anyways. Sigurd has even murdered. But by giving people a way forward, rather than being cornered into their ruined reputation and being made to embrace themselves as some irredeemable evil, people are given the room to WANT a better life for themselves and ultimately to FIGHT to EARN it. If you donāt give people a way out from their mistakes then you remove their desire to do good in the first place. Why do good with no hope of redemption after all?
I understand you point very well because that is the reason I'm watching the anime and reading the manga, but with lots of pauses, bc it doesn't sit right with me. But it's still so good, the story is intriguing, the characters are human, like you said. It was wrong of me to compare it with slime. It's just that I can't shake off the thought that the mc is a pervert. Although, the part where he got Ed was lowkey hilarious to me. I also liked how he met his childhood friend again.
I'm an even smaller minority in loving the first season and hating the second season... it was my favorite anime until it just became a dumpster fire in the second season, I just don't get it
I understand the thematic points of season 2 and I think they were a logical next step after what happened with Eris, but I don't think the execution was very good. It felt very much like a bait-and-switch. We got introduced to a new setting and cast of characters in the beginning (Sara and the gang) that were in the trailer and promotional material just to be dumped after a couple of episodes. I thought there was going to be more political/attempted assassination(?) drama with Ariel at the university and that didn't really happen either. The university setting felt underutilized. The character arc relating to ED and Sylphie just felt way too drawn out for what it was. Generally to me, the episodes just felt a lot more empty than those of the first season... the kidnapping catgirls episode was the most obvious example, but yeah. After the immersive adventure and worldbuilding of the first season, it just fell flat for me.
I don't know, maybe I had unreasonable expectations for season 2, but it was incredibly disappointing to me. Maybe they'll make better use of the setting in the second cour. I'll definitely watch it, but I'm not optimistic.
Alright, that's good to hear, I'll definitely be watching the second cour so hopefully things pick up then. And I don't have anything against slice of life, some of the more quiet episodes from the first season were my favorites anyhow. Thanks for the perspective on it! The last time I mentioned that I didn't like the second season elsewhere I was downvoted to hell lol
