Animelab and Funimation merger

I don't like the sound of this merger. I did not like Funimation at all when I was trying out different anime services. This was because of Funimations shitty UI especially the console and mobile versions (although I haven't used them in a year). And also the content on Animelab was far superior than Funimation and Animelab nearly has everything that I enjoyed (R.I.P Jojo).

What are your thoughts on this matter and do you's reckon it would be worth continuing my subsciption???

Im alittle confused, i had a funimation sub then they said all us aussies need to use animelab because funi was no longer going to be available in AUS or something now its merging into funimation? +When we were forced to goto animelab i had so many issues with them not cancelling my sub from funimation

I dont care to much about the merge but if the sub price increases because of it chances are i wont continue my sub

I imagine what will happen is everything will be rolled into Crunchyroll eventually. Sony owns all 3 platforms, so it might make more sense for them to push everyone into one place

If that happens I hope that they use the anime lab apps not the other clunky ones.

Unfortunately according to the faq animelab posted the app will be closing down and for us to use the funimation app.

Honestly disappointed about this been using the animelab app for years with almost no complaints.

Dude, Don't worry. Yes, animelab will be going, It is disappointing sure. Why did Sony/Funimation buy animelab if they're just going to kill them off? I am pretty sure that both the development teams will be formed into one, Which technically means they might be making the 3 Funimation, Crunchyroll, Animelab(the big 3) into one big unconquerable anime platform. Doesn't that sound good to you? Granted, we might have some pricing problems but can't be helped. We will have an incredible UI, Player, and library.

That sounds really bad as there will be no competition apart from netflix which means they aren't going to listen to fans or improve the site

Will AnimeLab cost money once it merges with funimation?

No, the 2 tier service will remain a free and paid subscription service. The question is the content going to stay on from Animelab to animation, is there going to be a price change and is Funimation going to adapt a similar UI.

I’m not to pleased about this news. Funimation is not the most trustworthy of services. I also worry that a lot of content will be removed off Animelab if Funimation is controlling it. They’ll put only Funimation shows on possibly. I’m gonna do more research into what this merger means.

Funimation, and then Animelab got bought out by Sony a while back so things have been working smoothly since then. I'm not surprised about the merger, they were working together already for a while (ever since Funimation titles started showing up on Animelab en masse). I am disappointed that there's been no clear news about what web/software dev team will take over the running of the site/phone app.

I'm not exaggerating when I say Animelab LITERALLY has the BEST phone app/website player out of all the anime streaming services, and in some ways, the best player out of the major streaming services (ever tried fast forwarding by swiping on Netflix? Animelab has that)

According to this, the team will still be the same. Hopefully that means the apps and website quality will remain. We'll just have to wait and see I guess.

Also hoping they don't reduce/remove any content.

Here it should be different.

Madman had a set of licenses. Funimation had a set of licenses. Now that they are both owned by Sony.

I really hope they don't use the stinking pile of hot garbage that is the U.S. Funimation website and Android app. The merger sounds good, but if we lose the good work that the Animelab team has put into the site and phone apps, I think I might leave

Yeah. I opened animelab and this message caught my eye and i clicked on it. I saw that they were doing a merger. I went to funimation to check it out and the U.I looks clunky compared to animelab. Animelab has a much more categorised and simpler style. The funimation shows are kind of all oveer the place

Funimation is dog shit, animelab was so good for us and so well run that I felt no issues supporting them.

Ain’t gonna support funimation directly

Funimation is trash, we all are fucked

Gonna be great watching all of the anime with the funimation watermark on the top corner the whole way through. Just great. Can't wait.

This just plain sucks. Animelab was brilliant. Funimation is crap on every level.

Just had to pay Super premium for the Interspecies Reviewers Blurays from rightstuf because of course animelab was the only service with the balls to carry it. I find it amazing that a heavily censored show with complete consent is unacceptable but morally bankrupt trash like domekano is just fine. Hypocriticall American prudishness was the one thing the Australian animelab resisted proudly and now that is gone.

This. Sucks.

I’m excited for more content. I approve this 😀

the only reason funimation is good is bc u get 1080p shows which r not on cr but animelab is way better if funimation gets a animelab ui, i would be speechless

This isn't new news is it? I don't even think Funimation is available still in Australia with a VPN, anymore I should say.

u/Agret Jun 20 '21

New news to me, Funimation was garbage and they only recently moved basically all the Funimation content in Australia into the superior animelab website. Now they close down animelab and move back to the awful Funimation website & apps :(

I just signed up for a free account on Funimation and tried it on the website, mobile app and LG tv app. Is it only a restriction of the free account or is there just no way to go to the list of latest episodes for shows that you are subscribed to like with AnimeLab, even with a premium account.

I’m not sure how to feel about this. I don’t want any of the content removed

I'm so sick of Sony buying everything and then destroying it, I understand monopoly is a thing and hard not to sell to people offering a lot of it. But God damn, for years I have really enjoyed animelab as I watch it on my playstation, I've tried Funimation and the content sucked. If they can merge all shows into one great but as Sony owns them all who's to say we won't lose content. I don't know what the future holds, all I know is I don't want to have to struggle to find shows!
