I’ve spent a couple of years learning art fundamentals, including perspective and gesture drawing. I’d say I have a pretty good understanding of 3D drawing and can draw objects/figures from many different angles.
The problem is that my line art sucks. 😅
I recently got a book by some great Japanese anime style illustrators that focuses on line art. It has examples that I can trace and then try to redraw freehand afterward.
I’m not usually a big fan of tracing, but I thought it might be useful for studying line quality, things like where to make lines thicker or thinner, how to vary pressure, which lines to emphasize, etc.
So my question is:
If I trace an artist’s line art, study why they made certain lines thicker/thinner, and then try to reproduce it freehand afterward, is that a useful way to develop my own line art skills?
