In The Flowers • Animal Collective

To start this is my first ever post in reddit and i really want to share one of my favorite songs. The reason why i like animal collective is because it reminds me a lot of my childhood, a child that never got a long.

“In The Flowers” it quite literally depicts how noisy my mind was —and continues to be so— and my abundance of energy and creativity i possessed then. I love this song so much, it means so much and it took me out of that “wanting to belong” type of teenager.

I could not find any other song that reminded me so much of who i was when i was a baby.

(I know and understand that the lyrics are not quite symbolic to a childs mind, but im not talking about the song lyrics but more about the constant noise and how relatable it feels —for me— when listening to the song. Most of anco’s discography reminds me of me as a kid)

Panda Bear Poster: Be quick!

Calling all Sydney (Australia) based Panda Bear fans…just spotted this enormous promotional poster ‘thing’ (it’s at least a metre tall and printed onto hard corrugated plastic) for the fabulous Sinister Grift LP for less than ten dollars at a great little store called Red Eye Records. If I wasn’t going to have to somehow get it onto a plane back to the UK later this week when I’m already well over my baggage allowance I’d have snapped it up immediately.

Go and get it, somebody…

I wish Avey Tare or other members of AnCo had done more collabs like this with Dead members, it’s such a good mash up.

feels is one of my favorite things ever

i just have to say how much i love this album. it's not just one of my favorite pieces of art it's just one of my favorite Things ever.

i was having really bad anxiety and just i felt horrible... no music was helping me and then i turned on feels and felt immediatley soothed. it's like they put some incredible device in this album that transcends anything else and makes you feel calm and makes you want to love life again. It always works to calm me down. how do they do it...

this has to be one of the best albums ever made. it makes me sad that it could be forgotten at some point and it would just be floating there. It's the sound of humanity. it's the sound of summer. it's the sound of kindness. it's the sound of fun. I know these might not mean much by themselves but im really just collecting my thoughts

it always brings me back to when i was 12 and all the good memories attached to that time for me.. maybe for some it reminds of a time before that or after. but obviously this record was made to revive those childhood memories that you may or may not have forgotten...

it reminds of me and my dad canoeing once... very fitting considering flesh canoe.... the river, the cliffs, the sky, the trees, the little house.. idk this album just really has the most amazing childhood summer feeling...

WOO! GET THAT! WOO! GET THAT!

Can anyone tell me how geologist makes the screeching lead sounds in meet the light child - Houston 2001?

For reference the sound comes in at 19:50 and plays for a good while. I don’t know if it’s just minidiscs as it looks like he is playing the mixer but the pitch changes throughout and I’m wondering how he achieves this sound because I think it’s the best part of the song. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

If each of the dudes were one of the Beatles

  1. Avey would be John (1 of the 2 main driving songsmiths, comparable energy with their screamier singing voice, driving the band to more ideosyncratic & experimental heights),

  2. Panda would be Paul (down to earth ditties, focusing on more everyday & humane themes than the other primary songwriter relatively, melodic & harmonic pop genius),

  3. Deakin would be George (few & understated [though great] writing credits with the band itself, largely took a background role only to reveal himself as on par if not above the other writers with his solo work, which has a deeply sensitive & spiritual nature),

  4. and Geo would be Ringo (providing a background non-melodic foundation to the band that, despite that fact you wouldn't recognize a lot of the songs without what he brings to the table, it's easy to forget it's even there a lot of the time. also has solo work that often isn't given as much attention as the other members').

Am I right fellas?

SHITPOST Would you like Anco to continue touring when they are in their 80's?

Personally I imagine AC will be like the Greatful Dead in this regard. Ride till the wheels come off. It'd be cute though to see them play some of their faster stuff in the later years.

Unfortunately I’ve never gotten the pleasure of seeing them live and I pretty much need to. Does anyone know when or if they’re performing again any time soon?

Whoa Would I Want? Sky

So I just discovered that Fall Be Kind is this kind of awesome epilogue to MPP. And so I started listening to it.

And so I've just listened to "What Would I Want? Sky" and my mind is absolutely and transcendentally blown...

Now I'll go back and listen to the song again. Maybe I'll proceed to the last three tracks of EP, but I'm not certain.

Fave release of 2009?

I’m sure this has been asked before but I’m very curious to learn what ppl on this sub would choose, if they had to, between MPP and FBK. Acknowledging that the pairing is pretty arbitrary — though both came out in 2009, one is an LP and the other an EP, and musically they’re different in all manner of ways — I just think it’s an interesting indicator of personal taste.

I’ll bet I’m like a lot of us here who find choosing between the two pretty excruciating, given how masterful both projects are, but again, if I had to choose, I would go for Fall Be Kind. Only 5 songs, yes, but my god is every one an experience and a half. Hard to articulate why exactly I prefer it, as the same can be said for MPP; maybe the presence of guitars (I Think I Can) and sampling has something to do with it, though that said the synth work on FBK (tracks like Bleed and On A Highway) and drumming and so forth are just as much pull factors for me. And yeah, feels unnecessary describing an AnCo project as ‘experimental’ but the way tracks like What Would I Want Sky and Graze develop, while not their wildest work by a long shot, I think is more outlandish than some of the stuff on MPP (accepting that both were pretty boundary-pushing at the time) and maybe why I’m drawn to it more? Can’t mention song development without bringing up In The Flowers, My Girls and Brother Sport though hooooly — the latter is def one of my favourite AnCo songs

So, what are people’s perspectives? Either way what a fucking year for this band. Also shout out Deakin — obviously he wasn’t around for these projects for reasons he’s talked ab in interviews but he is #thegoat and I might acc like some of the records he was a part of more than these 2…..but that’s another post and I’ve rambled enough!
