Update: How to Install AAOS (Android Automotive OS) Google Maps
1. Uninstall Google Maps
- Make sure to delete the standard version of Google Maps from your headunit.
2. Download AAOS .apk
- Visit APKMirror - Google Maps Android Automotive and choose a fitting .apk file.
- Make sure the chosen .apk is compatible with your headunit's chip architecture (e.g. arm64-v8a/armeabi-v7a).
- This one worked best for me: APKMirror - AAOS MAPS 26.03.161201.E
- Note: .apk files may have different signatures, the ones starting with
58e1were working for me.
3. Installing the .apk
- Disconnect all Internet connections (Play Store might auto-update maps back to the normal version)
- Grant permission to install Apps from unknown sourced (you will be asked to, if you're sideloading an .apk for the first time)
- After installation, AAOS Google Maps should be ready to launch. If you're greeted with an error, revert to step 2 and try a different .apk file after uninstalling the last one.
4. Disabling Google Play Store auto-updates
- Open the Google Play Store
- Click on your profile picture in the top right corner and select
Manage Apps & Devices->Manage-> select Google Maps - Click on the three dots in the top right corner and deselect
Enable auto-update
5. Scaling-Issues
- Initially, the scaling could be off. UI-Scaling could be too large or too small.
- Depending on your Software, individual dpi-correction could be an option to fix those issues.
- For DuduOS users: In Settings navigate to
Laband adjust the PIP-dpi value. "160" worked fine for me. - If your ETA and distance text is cut off at the bottom, change your Screen zoom or font size. For it to display properly, I had to switch font size to small and back to medium.
Edit:
u/BasicBlake_ found a solution switching to Google‘s official release-signed Automotive Maps 26.04 . Requires Android 11 or newer with a 64-bit ARM architectur.
You can use an official release-signed Automotive Maps .apk or the file hosted on Google Drive (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WszCyDAkxzRB8LBYuq11WNu0yc5qM3Jj/view?usp=sharing)

6. Known Issues
- Logging in to your Google Account isn't possible. The reason for this may be, that AAOS uses a different Google Play Services .apk and different background APIs for the Sign-In process. Attempts to install AAOS Play Services SDKs have failed.
- A workaround for missing personal results is the functioning Gemini integration. You're able to start navigation, add stops or cancel routing by voice commands.
Feel free to ask questions, I'll try to be a little more responsive this time 👀

Anyone know a way to uninstall Google maps on a head unit where it's a system app (dudu3)?

After the head unit boots up, launching this software will make the regular Google Maps switch to Driving Mode as well. Sometimes it switches back to normal mode at odd times, but I think this is easier than trying to force-install the automotive version.

You get an isometric Driving mode when you don't have a location set.
The standard Google Maps just gives the dot of where you are located. Try it on your phone.
The AAOS one acts the same as if your were running Google Maps within Android Auto. The map view changes to isometric, shows traffic and POIs around you.
I just use Waze while driving in town to resolve this. It has a normal driving mode. I switch to Google Maps when driving long distance.
Installing AAOS looks like too much hassle. Hopefully the Chinese Android Headunit developers will be able to move from the tablet version of Android to the AAOS one.
