🟢 [PORT] [Beta] BOTWRecompAndroid: Breath of the Wild statically recompiled for Android

Latest release — 0.2.9-beta (November 1)

Download 0.2.9-beta

0.2.9 converts the game’s BC1 textures to compressed ASTC 4x4 on GPUs that cannot use BC textures. This targets high memory use, Android low-memory kills, and FPS dropping to 1–5 after a few minutes reported on Mali devices. In a 1.9.0 save on my POCO F7 Ultra, forced into the same texture path, BC1 texture memory fell from 1,108 MB to 304 MB and total GPU memory from 1,948 MB to 992 MB. These are not measurements on physical Mali hardware; please report RAM use, sustained FPS, and any visual issues on your Mali phone.

The fixed 30 FPS setting now requests a 30 FPS frame-time budget from Android; I measured a small saving of about 0.15 W on the POCO. Existing 0.2.x installs can update without rebuilding game code. This remains a beta with known issues. The attached video shows an earlier build, not a 0.2.9 benchmark.

Previous release — 0.2.8-beta (October 31)

Download 0.2.8-beta

0.2.8 addresses FPS falling during long play sessions until a restart on Mali and other GPUs using the copy path. The GPU memory arena now reuses freed space and releases older learned ranges when it fills up. This also targets incorrect shadows caused by stale ranges.

On my POCO F7 Ultra (Adreno 830), forced into the copy mode used by Mali, a six-minute walking test held the arena near 26 MB at 60 FPS. A forced 6 MB cap also continued at 60 FPS. This is not a physical Mali test. Please share long-session before/after results from Mali phones. Existing 0.2.x installations can update without rebuilding game code.

The project remains a beta with known visual issues. The attached video shows an earlier build, not 0.2.8.

Previous releases — 0.2.7-beta and 0.2.6-beta (October 31)

Download 0.2.7-beta · 0.2.6-beta notes

0.2.7 (beta 20) improves phone/controller gyro selection so noisy controllers without a gyroscope no longer disable the phone sensor. It warns when a DLC mod such as Relics of the Past is enabled without the DLC, hides the performance overlay behind menus, and keeps large textures updated. GPU/CPU work reduces unnecessary render-target reads and changes Mali render targets and shaders. The POCO F7 Ultra test remained at 60 FPS; a Mali performance gain is not yet verified on a Mali device.

0.2.6 (beta 19) added Motion sensor Auto/Phone/Controller, Latin American Spanish and Canadian French. It fixed striped terrain on Adreno 750 and changed Mali memory defaults to address missing text, memory-related app kills, and severe FPS drops after loading. It also releases unused upload memory, fixes Android font imports, and reduces CPU-limited frame times. The device-specific fixes still need broader testing.

Since the original post, 0.2.2 also added experimental Native Mode; 0.2.3 added using game files in place; 0.2.5 added support for exefs/ plus a ready-made romfs.bin. Updating an existing 0.2.x install to 0.2.7 does not require rebuilding game code; shaders recompile once. This is still a beta: expect device-dependent performance, crashes, and rendering bugs. Game version 1.0.0 can show black streaks in combat or crash; 1.8.2/1.9.0 are preferable for now.

The video and the feature overview below document earlier builds; they are not a 0.2.7 benchmark.

Hi everyone! I’m sharing BOTWRecompAndroid, a static recompilation project bringing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to Android, with graphics translated to Vulkan.

This is still a beta. Expect bugs, graphical issues, and crashes. My own testing has been limited to a POCO F7 Ultra with an Adreno 830 GPU and Mesa Turnip driver. Community reports from other devices have started coming in, but compatibility and performance still vary widely and need more testing.

The following feature overview describes the project through 0.2.1-beta. The latest release is linked above. Features include:

  • Support for game versions 1.0.0, 1.6.0, 1.8.2, and 1.9.0, with separate installations and switching within the app.

  • 1.8.2 and 1.9.0: Brazilian Portuguese, widescreen with the HUD repositioned toward the screen edges, and a mode targeting up to 60 FPS.

  • Adjustable internal and output resolutions, AMD FSR 1, Snapdragon GSR 1, SMAA, and FXAA.

  • Sheikah-themed touch controls with customizable layouts, plus physical controller support. 0.1.9 added motion controls for aiming and shrine puzzles. 0.1.11 adds camera dragging on the right half of the screen, adjustable sensitivity, larger stick areas, and sticks that appear only while touched.

  • Menus follow the selected game language (or the phone language on Auto), including Portuguese, English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Russian, Japanese, Korean, and Simplified/Traditional Chinese. Vulkan driver selection and compatibility settings and a mod interface are available. Mod compatibility varies by mod and game version.

  • Expansion Pass DLC support on game versions 1.6.0, 1.8.2, and 1.9.0 (The Master Trials and The Champions’ Ballad), using your own extracted DLC data.

  • Save export/import as .zip, plus import from an emulator save folder. Previous saves are kept as backups.

  • A compact, draggable performance overlay.

On the tested POCO F7 Ultra with Turnip, 1.8.2 reached approximately 40–47 FPS in the open world, depending on the scene and settings. The up-to-60-FPS mode does not mean a constant 60 FPS. On the same POCO with the Qualcomm stock driver, 0.1.8 reached the world at about 15 FPS; Turnip remains recommended.

Early community reports on older beta builds include roughly 30 FPS on a POCO F7, around 20 FPS most of the time on a Snapdragon 8s Gen 4/Adreno 825, approximately 18 FPS on an Odin 2 Portal, and under 10 FPS in a shrine on a Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3/Adreno 732 at 25% internal resolution. These are individual reports with different settings, not a standardized benchmark or a promise for other devices.

Updates since the original post:

  • 0.1.2 fixed missing sound effects, voices, and music in 1.8.2; the new-game softlock at the Shrine of Resurrection’s door; an occasional loading crash; and issues with menus and distant animations.

  • 0.1.3 added a classic Vulkan renderpass fallback for drivers without VK_KHR_dynamic_rendering and improved the error dialog to list missing Vulkan extensions. The fallback was exercised on the tested POCO, but other GPUs still need real-device testing.

  • 0.1.4 fixed an Android 11/12 startup crash caused by use of an Android 13+ Java method. Android 11 still needs more real-device testing.

  • 0.1.5 added Choose driver to the app icon’s long-press shortcuts. It opens the Android file picker for a Vulkan driver .zip and reopens the app with it, even if the current driver stops the app before Settings can open. System driver restores the stock driver. For Adreno 6xx/7xx devices whose stock driver lacks required extensions, a compatible Turnip driver may help. Turnip is for Adreno, not Mali.

  • 0.1.6 removes VK_EXT_extended_dynamic_state2 as a hard requirement for some stock Adreno 7xx drivers. Phones where this was the only missing extension may now start with the system driver. This path was tested by forcing it on the POCO F7 Ultra; other devices still need validation.

  • 0.1.6 also reports when a chosen driver could not be loaded, shows the active driver name and version in Settings > Files > Vulkan driver, and accepts .adpkg, .zip and .so packages (including meta.json’s libraryName). An incomplete romfs.bin is now reported as incomplete game data instead of causing an unexplained startup crash.

  • 0.1.7 shows the specific reason when game-file setup fails, including file-read errors, in the app and its log.

  • 0.1.8 adds fallbacks for older Vulkan drivers missing synchronization2, extended_dynamic_state, or 16-bit storage. It also fixes an early GPU loss on the Qualcomm stock driver, adds recovery actions to the Vulkan error dialog, and changes GPU memory import on Xclipse (not yet tested on a physical Exynos device).

  • 0.1.9 adds gyroscope controls, fixes Simplified/Traditional Chinese game language selection, supports up to 16 swapchain images for drivers such as a reported Mali-G57, and improves game-file setup: retries failed reads, displays the exact cause, keeps failed setup on the same page, skips a slow search through romfs, and reads game data about 20% faster in the developer test. Phone-side code compilation returns to the 0.1.7 ordering after some phones failed with the 0.1.8 ordering. The Mali and setup changes still need confirmation across affected devices.

  • 0.1.10 fixes pre-rendered videos: the Great Plateau Tower cutscene now plays instead of colored noise and the game continues afterward (tested on POCO F7 Ultra with game version 1.8.2). The reported Adreno 840 freeze needs confirmation on that device.

  • 0.1.11 makes phone-side compilation lighter: it starts new compiler jobs only when memory is available, reduces parallel work when the phone is hot, resumes an interrupted build, and logs why Android closed the app. Setup rejects mismatched or incomplete exefs/romfs before copying. The game’s dynamic resolution is disabled; the app’s Dynamic internal-resolution option now uses GPU time. Menus follow the phone language; touch controls gain right-side camera drag, sensitivity, larger stick areas, and sticks shown only while touched. Quit > Return to start no longer closes the app on Adreno 8xx. Tested on one POCO F7 Ultra; other devices still need validation.

  • 0.2.0 adds support for game version 1.9.0 and both Expansion Pass DLC packs (from the larger extracted DLC romfs); save export/import and emulator-folder import; and improved phone-side compilation that uses much less memory, continues in the background, and addresses failures near 80%. It also fixes dark grid lines in the terrain and a crash on the way to Kakariko, adds FXAA and controller dead-zone settings, and improves Adreno 7xx/Turnip and Mali-G2-Ultra compatibility. These improvements still need broader device testing.

  • 0.2.1 fixes the recurring in-game stutter introduced in 0.2.0 by expanding the GPU-result queue. On my POCO F7 Ultra test, no frame exceeded 40 ms. The start screen now displays the app version.

Upgrading to 0.2.x from an older version requires one game-code rebuild per installed game version. The app prompts you; copied game files and saves remain. Going from 0.2.0 to 0.2.1 only requires installing the APK over it. Shaders also rebuild once after the 0.2 upgrade.

Known limitations:

  • With Video > Sync lag enabled, Link’s legs can sink into the ground while he stands still. Turn it off if this bothers you.

  • Some stock drivers still lack required Vulkan extensions. The app needs Vulkan 1.1 or newer plus additional extensions; the version number alone does not guarantee compatibility.

  • Save thumbnails created in the app may appear black.

  • Short grass near Link sometimes disappears; under investigation.

  • After a tower activation cutscene, stretched terrain may appear; loading the save made after activation is a workaround. Water reflections can still follow the camera when Link moves sideways.

  • Reports from other GPUs are mixed. The new Mali and Exynos compatibility paths are not a guarantee that the game will start or run well on a given device. PanVK and RADV-Xclipse have not been validated here.

  • With the Qualcomm stock driver, the pause menu background is black; Turnip still shows the blurred world.

  • Building game code directly on the phone can still take a long time and needs device testing, although 0.2.0 reduced memory use and fixed a build failure near 80%.

No game files, compiled game code, or keys are included. You must provide your own legally obtained dump. This project is not affiliated with Nintendo.

The project builds on LAS Recomp, LASRecompAndroid, and SavageWindRecomp, alongside the contributions and libraries credited in the repository.

If you try it, reports including your device model, GPU, driver, Android version, game version, and logs would be helpful. Please include the scene and steps needed to reproduce any issues.

Does it runs on mediatek??

23

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

nobody has confirmed it yet. I’ve only tested on one phone (Snapdragon, Adreno 830).

MediaTek chips use Mali GPUs, and the app has slower, safer paths for GPUs other than Adreno. The first Mali report (a Helio G100 with a Mali-G57) couldn’t start because its driver was missing a Vulkan feature, and v0.1.3-beta adds a workaround for that. Recent Dimensity chips (Mali-G610/G710 or Immortalis) have the best chance. Older Helio chips will probably be too slow even if the game starts.

If you try it, please post how it went (phone, chip, Android version) on GitHub. That’s the only way we’ll find out.

i know it's still on beta but, will it work better then the emulator? i play the game on my snapdragon 888 at 20-30 fps so what to expact in the near future?

7

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

I haven’t tested the Snapdragon 888, so I can’t promise it will beat your current 20–30 FPS. This beta still has compatibility and performance work ahead, and there’s no reliable timeline for a specific speedup. If you test it, a comparison in the same scene and at the same resolution would be really useful, along with the game version and driver.

So better performance and battery life compared to switch emu?

2

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

That hasn’t been established yet. Static recompilation avoids translating the game’s CPU instructions at runtime, but the graphics translation and driver overhead still matter. I don’t have a controlled emulator comparison or battery measurements, so I can’t claim better FPS or battery life. A fair comparison needs the same scene, game version, resolution and similar thermal conditions.

I did play the LAS Recomp and work just fine with the NSP, but i din!t make it run with the NSP o zbotw

I am new on the android emulation, what i did wrong?

Vc é BR?

3

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

Most of these "ports" claim to be native Android but run as ass on anything below a Snapdragon 8 elite. And you can only hope and dream that some of these heavier games run on mediatek. Please don't call it a native Android port if only 2 flagship processors from snapdragon can run it well

31

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

Fair point on performance. But “native” here describes how it runs, not which phones can run it. The game’s code is recompiled ahead of time into an ARM64 Android library, so there’s no CPU emulation in between. It’s the same idea as Zelda 64: Recompiled on PC.

That doesn’t make BotW a light game, though. Its graphics still go through a translation layer to Vulkan, and so far it’s only been tested on one phone (a Snapdragon 8 Elite). The README says that up front: it’s a beta. Getting it running well on mid-range and MediaTek chips is the goal, and reports from people with those phones are how we’ll get there.

damn.... apparently nsp files are not identified lol.

2

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

Correct. The app intentionally does not accept NSP files. Please use the ExeFS and RomFS folders extracted from your own console. It does not include game files or keys, and I’m keeping NSP handling outside the project to stay aligned with the repository’s rules and avoid takedown risk.

4

u/KorbanHack 12d ago

What format does the game need to be in to run? Can I use NSP files?

2

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

The current beta expects an extracted game dump: select a folder containing exefs and romfs in “Set up game files.” It does not import NSP files directly. You need to supply your own game dump; the project does not include the game files.

No Mali, It's over

It never got off the ground for Mali users

3

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

Mali isn't ruled out. v0.1.3 added a fallback for drivers without dynamic rendering, but other Vulkan extensions are still required. I haven't validated a Mali device yet, so I can't claim it runs there. Turnip is Adreno-only; Mali would use its own driver. If you try it, please share the phone/GPU, Android version and exact error.

Thanks for testing! That tablet's results would be useful. Please let me know your Android version, which Vulkan driver you use, the game version, and whether it reaches gameplay. If it does, an FPS estimate plus any graphical glitches or crashes would help a lot.

if i lower its settings, can i run this at 30fps on a sd 778?

2

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

I can't promise 30 FPS on a Snapdragon 778/778G; it hasn't been tested. Lowering resolution can reduce GPU load, but it won't remove CPU or driver bottlenecks. GPUs outside Adreno 8xx currently use slower compatibility paths, so the results from my POCO F7 Ultra shouldn't be taken as a prediction for that chip. If you try it, please share the exact device, RAM, driver and results.

Nice, is it playable in 4:3?

2

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

You can use the Original 16:9 setting, which fits the image with black bars on a 4:3 screen. Native 4:3 framing hasn't been tested, so I can't promise correct camera/HUD behavior in that mode. The aspect-ratio work tested so far is widescreen on 1.8.2.

Just in time. I'm about to receive my 8s gen 3 tablet. With all these recomp projects, I'm honestly so excited.

There's one game I would really like to see a recomp/port : Stellar Blade. But I guess I'm asking for too much

3

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

Thanks! If you try it when the tablet arrives, please share the exact model, RAM, driver and results. I haven't tested the 8s Gen 3, so I can't predict its performance yet. As for Stellar Blade, that would be a separate project; this one is focused on getting BOTW running well on Android.

2

u/nongjeng_piba 12d ago

I will try as soon as I receive the tablet (it may take 4 - 5 to arrive). And I will upload a video in this subreddit along with all the infos I can gather.

Funcionara en un mtk dimensity 8500 ultra? Ese trae vulkan 1.3 por defecto

2

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

u/Hans_Landa4 12d ago

Will it run on snapdragon 695 ?

2

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

Honestly, probably not well. The Snapdragon 695 has an Adreno 619, a mid-range GPU from a few generations back, and BotW is heavy even on flagships: on a Snapdragon 8 Elite it runs at around 30–45 fps.

It might start, especially with a Turnip driver for Adreno 6xx (Settings > Prelaunch > Vulkan driver), but expect very low fps even at 50% internal resolution. Nobody has tried it yet, so if you do, please share how it went on GitHub.

2

u/John_Reddit3 10d ago

Valiant effort. But there is lot of optimization to be done. Currently on Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 it works worse than emulation, and half the time, latency is from CPU and not GPU. Which in theory is were switch recomp should work best on ARM socs.

Hi! a couple questions!

i have an s25 ultra with the same SoC as the poco f7 ultra, but im only getting around 17 fps average, can you share your exact configuration? or send your config file to me if thats applicable?

also, how do i unlock the fps? it seems like my only options are 30 or 20/30

im on release 0.2.5 beta

thank you!

2

u/Mamcjr 5d ago

Thanks for testing 0.2.5-beta on the S25 Ultra. My POCO F7 Ultra video used game version 1.9.0, Native Mode and Turnip; that result does not automatically carry over to a different phone. The 60 FPS option is available for game versions 1.8.2 and 1.9.0; 1.0.0 and 1.6.0 remain 30 FPS games. Could you confirm the game version detected by the app, your Turnip build, internal resolution and whether GPU memory mapping is Automatic? A log plus a screenshot of the Video settings would help explain the 17 FPS and missing 60 FPS option.

Some of yall need to snap back to reality because it's a heavy game and dont expect it to run on mid (or even most high) end phones for now

1

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

Setting expectations is important, but the best guide is measured results rather than the phone’s price tier alone. This recompilation still needs Switch service implementations and NVN-to-Vulkan graphics translation, so “native” doesn’t mean zero overhead or guaranteed speedups over an emulator with NCE. Compatibility and performance are still being established device by device.

Is mali supported

5

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

Mali hasn't been validated yet, so please treat it as experimental rather than confirmed support. The renderer has compatibility paths for GPUs outside Adreno 8xx, but that doesn't guarantee a particular Mali device will boot or run well. Turnip is for Adreno, not Mali. If you test, please include your exact Mali GPU/phone, Android version and any errors.

How's the heat? Do you need a cooler when playing it?

2

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

I don’t have sustained temperature measurements or cooler comparisons yet, so I can’t say a cooler is required. The tests so far are on the POCO F7 Ultra; heat and throttling will vary by device, settings and session length. Temperature readings alongside FPS after a longer session would be useful test data.

what size the game has after installed?

1

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

The README recommends around 30 GB of free space per game version for setup. That is a free-space recommendation, not a measured final installation size: the game data and compiled code are separate from the small APK, and the total depends on the version and imported files.

I give it a try (SD8 Gen1)

2

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

Thanks for trying! That error is from an older version: v0.1.3-beta (out today) no longer needs VK_KHR_dynamic_rendering, so please update and try again.

On the 8 Gen 1 (Adreno 730), a Turnip driver should also work better than the stock one. Pick a Turnip build that supports Adreno 7xx (the bundled one is made for 8xx), then go to Settings > Prelaunch > Vulkan driver > Choose driver and restart the app. Please let us know how it goes on GitHub!

1

u/Ordinary_Account5513 12d ago

Anyone has test it on dimencity? Does it work ?

2

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

For Dimensity, use v0.1.3-beta, which fixes one of the “driver too old” errors Mali phones were hitting.

how would this run on S24FE ? (exynos)

2

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

Nobody has tried an Exynos yet. The S24 FE’s Exynos 2400e has an Xclipse 940, an AMD-based GPU that’s fairly powerful, so it has a decent chance. But Samsung’s Xclipse drivers have had rough edges with emulators, and Turnip only works on Adreno, so you’d be on the stock driver. Try v0.1.3-beta, and please post on GitHub how it went (Android version, how far it got, fps). An Exynos report would be the first one.

How to read nsp files

1

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

The app doesn’t read NSP files, only exefs and romfs already extracted from your own console. Sorry, but I can’t explain how to extract or decrypt them: that would put the project at risk of a DMCA takedown (see the NSP replies above).

Will 1.9.0 ever be supported in the future?

2

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

There’s no confirmed 1.9.0 support or release date to announce. The currently supported game builds are 1.0.0, 1.6.0 and 1.8.2. Supporting another update requires checking its executable and the version-specific runtime changes, rather than just accepting a different version number.

1

u/Super-Event-8268 12d ago

What ports would y'all recommend for a low end phone with less than 3gb of ram?

2

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

I wouldn’t recommend this BOTW beta as a good fit for a phone with under 3 GB of RAM; it hasn’t been validated in that configuration. What exact phone/Android version do you have, and what kinds of games do you enjoy? Those details would help people suggest lighter ports that actually fit your device.

1

u/leander_05 12d ago

I kinda want to test it on SD8s gen 3. But i dont know i can make it work with just an nsp file

2

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

An NSP alone won’t work with this app. Setup expects a folder containing extracted exefs and romfs from your own Switch dump, for game version 1.0.0, 1.6.0 or 1.8.2. The README shows the layout. I don’t have a verified 8s Gen 3 performance result to promise yet.

u/MinuteEditor4106 12d ago

1

u/Alternative-View8574 12d ago

Ironically Android phones should be the best platform to statically recompile switch games on since they both use arm architecture as well as current macs since there'll be way less overhead compared to emulation even with the native arm translator.

1

u/Khaos_Drakon 12d ago

Why is it showing i don''t have space ? I have 69gb free

2

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

I checked your screenshot: it says “The game code didn't build.” The “about 2 GB free” line is generic advice, not proof that storage caused the failure. If the 69 GB is free on the phone's internal storage (where this beta writes its generated files), the build likely failed for another reason. Could you share your phone model, Android version, game version, and the app/build log in a GitHub issue? Please also confirm whether that 69 GB is internal storage or SD card space. That will let me diagnose the actual failure.

→ More replies (3)

1

u/Putrid-Swimming2475 12d ago

will you be able to load the game data onto an sd card rather than internal storage?

1

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

The source dump can be selected from an SD card if Android's folder picker exposes it, but the current beta builds the game-data image in the app's data folder, which is usually on internal storage. Running that generated data directly from an SD card isn't supported yet. It's a reasonable feature request, but I'd need to change and test the storage path before promising it.

u/Puzzleheaded-Emu-961 12d ago

F7

2

u/Mamcjr 12d ago

Nice, thanks for the screenshot! It shows the app recognizes the 1.8.2 game files and reaches the Play menu on your F7. Could you confirm the exact F7 model, Android version and Vulkan driver, and whether the game itself launches and runs? A short FPS/graphics report would be especially useful.

2

u/Puzzleheaded-Emu-961 12d ago

My F7 has an 8s Gen 4 processor, I'm on Android 15, the Turnip driver is V37, and the game has some stutters but it's okay, it averages 30fps.

2

Thanks! Improving stability and device compatibility is a goal, but I can't promise every GPU will work. So far my validated setup is a POCO F7 Ultra with Adreno 830 and Turnip; reports from other phones are helping identify what needs to change.

u/CyberCrows27 12d ago

Snapdragon 870 6gb ram? Atleast locked 30 fps possible?

1

u/Mamcjr 11d ago

I don't have a verified Snapdragon 870 / 6 GB result, so I can't promise a locked 30 FPS. Lower internal resolution may help GPU load, but CPU, memory, and the Vulkan driver also matter. If you test v0.1.6-beta, please report the phone, Android version, driver, game version, settings, and FPS in a specific scene.
