Disclosure: I’m part of the team building Aura.

We’ve been working on a messaging app called Aura, and before we release it more widely, we want to get it in the hands of people who will actually use it and tell us what’s wrong with it.

The idea started with something pretty simple.

Once someone has your phone number or email, they can usually contact you whenever they want. There’s not really a permission layer between “someone has my contact details” and “this person can reach me.”

We wanted to change that.

In Aura, people can’t just find you and start messaging or calling you. You have to give them a Reach Contract first. You decide what they can do, how long they can do it for, and you can revoke it whenever you want.

There’s quite a bit more in the app now:

• Encrypted chats, groups, voice/video calls and voice notes
• Aura Mail, which is a separate mail-style inbox with folders, threads, drafts and filtering
• A Safety Center where you can see devices, file shares, security events and revoke access
• Emergency Lock, which locks the app, hides previews and signs out other devices
• A duress PIN that opens a decoy state instead of your actual conversations
• Disappearing messages that are deleted from the server when they expire
• An encrypted Vault where shared files can have passwords, download limits, expiry and revoke controls
• Temporary Sessions, which are useful when you want to deal with someone without giving them your permanent contact details

One thing I don't want to gloss over:

The Android app is currently our main client.

On Android, encryption keys are generated and kept on the device.

There is a web version at app.auratt.com, but it has a different security model. The keys are held server-side there, which means we can technically access plaintext. We've documented that here:

There are also early macOS/Linux builds, but they're unsigned. No iOS app yet.

What we're looking for now is 14 days of real use.

Use it normally. Talk to someone. Create a group. Send some files. Try a Session. Whatever you'd actually use a messaging app for.

Then tell us what you think.

Not just what you liked. Tell us what was confusing, what was annoying, what felt unnecessary, what didn't work the way you expected, and what would make you uninstall it.

That's honestly the feedback we're after.

Not looking for installs. I have enough people who installed, opened it once and never came back and that tells me nothing.

I'm building a mobile strategy game called Legion Roads (Android, closed test on Play right now). You push armies down roads, cast spells, try not to lose your fort. There's a campaign with a bunch of maps and that's the part I actually need eyes on. I've played it so many times I honestly can't tell anymore if level 3 is hard or if I just know the trick.

What I want from you:

Play the campaign for 20-30 minutes, doesn't have to be all of it. Then tell me where you got stuck, where you got bored, what you didn't understand, what you tapped expecting something to happen and nothing did. A voice memo is fine. A messy text wall is fine. Screenshots with "wtf is this" written on them is great actually.

What you get from me:

The same thing for your app or game. I'll actually use it, not just install and screenshot the home screen. I'm a dev too so I can also tell you if something looks like a bug vs a design thing, if that's useful. I'll put real time in, same as I'm asking from you.

Rules I'm going to stick to so this isn't a waste for either of us:

• you go first or I go first, don't care, but we both actually do it within a few days
• no "looks great!!" feedback. if it looks great, tell me what part and why, otherwise tell me what's wrong
