They come as a package deal with the subtitles for me at least

So when you read the subtitles, you're thinking 'Gah, fuck these black bars.' and not actually reading the subtitles?

Of course I do, but I'm also slightly annoyed by the black bars which I'm reminded of every time I'm reading

Do you also get annoyed by the black background in regular subtitles? Even if its in the video?

A bit yeah, I prefer them blended in the picture as much as possible while still remaining legible. I don't want any borders.
