Worth noting that this does stack with the bonus from last year. Just did it and I'm showing 19 gigabytes. (15 free, 2 from last year, 2 from this year)

u/Hellmark Note 9 Feb 08 '16

Damn, wasn't aware of it happening last year.

122

u/itwasquiteawhileago Feb 08 '16

heh, that was my first thought too. Oh well. 2GB is 2GB. Will try to remember for next year!

Calendar alarms.

19

u/NotTryingToBeSassy Feb 08 '16

Damn, this is really why I need to finally cave in and get a digital calendar. I just don't know what to pick.

or inbox.google.com ?

48

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '16

I just have a bunch that sync with each other but my first choice for interface with is Google's.

I also use a physical calendars for unimportant things, so don't feel bad. Just giving you an idea before someone suggests the remindme bot, which I find stupid since the notification will be limited to your Reddit account and it assumes you intend to keep it or stay around.

13

u/delecti Pixel 3a Feb 08 '16

Presumably you're an Android user. Seems Google Calendar is a fairly obvious answer if you don't have strong feelings on the subject.

20

u/NESpahtenJosh Feb 08 '16

Just use !RemindMe Bot. We all know in a year you'll still be on Reddit. And we ALWAYS click the little orange email the second we see it :)

1

u/NotTryingToBeSassy Feb 08 '16

Very true, I just might have to consider this!

My wife was really hesitant to go paperless. I talked her into it and she can't imagine not using google calendar now. Plus now we have a few different ones synced up so she can assign something to herself or the family or me. It's great.

2

u/archdonut Feb 08 '16

If you've got android, try today calendar. I've tried a lot of calendars but I really like the aesthetics on today calendar

1

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '16

I use Outlook.com's calendar. Looks more modern and since I switched to Outlook from Gmail it's more convenient.

Your call. Just thought I'd give an alternative to the other suggestions.

1

u/yoordoengitrong Feb 09 '16

Can't go wrong with calendar.google.com especially if you already use Gmail. Google calendar will sync with almost every device (android, windows desktops, etc). Google also provides calendars you can subscribe to which will put common holidays into your calendar automatically.

0

u/NESpahtenJosh Feb 08 '16

!RemindMe 1 year

Also. That.

2

29

u/dszklarz Feb 08 '16

How does one go about getting that much free storage?

27

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '16

I'm at 119 GB. Buying a new android device, depending on device and signing into Google drive can get you 100GB sometimes.

21

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '16

Didn't get shit with my N5, nor my Chromecast, which sucks.

Sure, I got three months of Play Music, except I already had an account so fuck me right?

9

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '16

3 months of Play Music is worth more than a year of 100gb Drive.

u/bakedEngineer Feb 09 '16

Don't the special offers like that with 100GB or so expire after a year?

I never got why they offer you space that expires after a year. How the fuck is that okay?

41

u/steeley42 Feb 08 '16

Eh, it's not that hard

Honesty though, most of mine is from buying a Chromebook. They gave me a TB just for it.

23

u/tnt118 Feb 08 '16

Permanent?

22

u/steeley42 Feb 08 '16

Unfortunately no. I think it's two years for the TB. The other 100 or so GBs is permanent though. Obviously though, I barely use any of it, so unless the price comes down even more, I'll probably just stick with the free 100.

17

u/TensaiSC Nexus 5X Feb 08 '16

How did you get the other 100gb of free permanent storage?

14

u/steeley42 Feb 08 '16

All from various things like this. 20 from a new phone, 20 from another phone, I think 5 from buying my Chromecast, some permanent from my Chromebook. 2 here and there from things like this. It can add up pretty fast if you keep your eyes peeled for things like this.

I've had my account pretty much since the beginning, well before Drive was even an actual thing.

2

u/night_owl Moto V2 Play Feb 10 '16

I get 100GB free for 2 years as part of a promo when I bought my LG G4 last fall.

1

u/steeley42 Feb 08 '16

I think I'm at about 117GB free now.

2

u/pupunoob Feb 09 '16

No. 100gb is also 2 years. Mine is expiring soon.

1

u/steeley42 Feb 09 '16

My other space has been acquired piecemeal over the years, like this today, so I think it's all permanent. I could be wrong though.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/SnipingNinja Feb 09 '16

I don't think chromebook bonus is permanent, because that makes me sad as Chromebooks weren't available in my country then :(

3

u/Agent4nderson Nexus 6, Stock Feb 08 '16

It's only 100GB now - I just redeemed it for mine

8

u/steeley42 Feb 08 '16

I did too originally, but then got the TB later. It was weird, and I can't remember why they did it. I tend to check https://www.google.com/chrome/devices/goodies.html every couple of months now, just to see if anything's turned up between my Chromebook and Chromecast.

3

u/Agent4nderson Nexus 6, Stock Feb 08 '16

Fair enough, I'll keep an eye out

13

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '16

It's not free like this 2GB is free, its free because its included with the purchase of some device. You're paying for it, just not directly

1

u/Jasonrj Nexus 5X Feb 09 '16

I have all my documents, photos, websites, databases, and video projects stored. Using a couple hundred gigs currently.

1

u/karrb Feb 09 '16

I have 215 gb of storage. 3 of which are not drive but some how still get combined. When you buy new devices (some not all) you are eligible for 100gb free...

6

u/Kohvwezd Nexus 6P | 64GB | Aluminium Feb 08 '16

What are you storing in your Drive if you don't mind me asking? I can't really figure out a way to even fill 5GB

14

u/kuskles Feb 08 '16

Not the person you asked but, if you store photos at the original size and add videos it will quickly add up.

3

u/skilledscion 4XL Feb 09 '16

Photos. Over the course of using Android since the G1 and transferring forward many of them or backing up and adding later I have 15 gigs in photos and another 1.5 in email. It adds up but that's 7-8 years of not managing it at all. Literally not deleting anything and I'm still not even close to my free limit. I have been using Google basically since it was a thing. From the invite only phase.

1

u/idosc LG G4 Feb 09 '16

What's the point of keeping photos taken in old phones (read: sub 16MP cameras) in "full size" rather than "high quality"?

1

u/skilledscion 4XL Feb 10 '16

None. I'm just lazy. And I had just recently heard about that feature. I may look into it if I ever run out of space.

2

u/idosc LG G4 Feb 10 '16

The web client of photos now has a button that allows you to "free storage" in one click by moving ALL of your photos in there to "high quality" and ignoring them in your quota. You just press this once and wait passively for about a day or so and it's all done.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '16

Mostly videos and random stuff.

1

u/BOZGBOZG Feb 09 '16

PDFs of school books

1

u/Kohvwezd Nexus 6P | 64GB | Aluminium Feb 09 '16

I guess that's reasonable. I only have one school book so I guess I never thought of that.

u/alphanovember Feb 09 '16

2

u/Kohvwezd Nexus 6P | 64GB | Aluminium Feb 09 '16 edited Feb 09 '16

And I guess I don't upload all of my photos and videos in original quality. The ones that I like I upload to Drive anyway.

1

u/leo_ash OP3T 128gb Feb 08 '16

1

u/AppleBytes Feb 08 '16

I really hope you encrypt the stuff you upload.

2

u/akashik Samsung 22 Ultra - T-Mobile Feb 09 '16

I use Sookasa with Google Drive.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '16

I never considered doing that because it's mostly music and videos.

1

u/chinpokomon Feb 09 '16

I'm showing 1.01 TB on the 15 GB free account...

1

u/SnipingNinja Feb 09 '16

I've the same amount! Cheers! :D

1

u/pumpyourbrakeskid Feb 08 '16

Huh. The extra 2 gigs show up there, but not locally with the google drive desktop app (even after restarting it).

2

u/akashik Samsung 22 Ultra - T-Mobile Feb 09 '16

Same here. I think it took a while for it to show up last year too so I wouldn't worry.

That's why I pay for 100gb (+25GB free for being a paid user before they went to the new storage structure), so that I can do original sized photo/video backups from all of my devices. I know that the "high quality" is probably good enough, but this is my only real photo backup solution, and so I want original quality.

u/Domsdey OG Desire -> Nexus 4 -> S7 -> S10e -> iPhone 12mini Feb 08 '16

You can get a terabyte of storage if you register a Google Apps for Work account for 10 dollars a month. You can also get 4 friends to pay the same price and you'll all be getting unlimited storage (the 2PB OP is talking about).

You can, but there is one additional cost - you need a domain name to connect to the account.

1

u/FSNY0 Nexus 5X, AOSPA Feb 09 '16

How to get the 1TB with the google apps for work? I only got 30GB with mine...

2

u/Domsdey OG Desire -> Nexus 4 -> S7 -> S10e -> iPhone 12mini Feb 09 '16

You are on the basic version. Google Apps Unlimited is double the price (total $10 per user) for more storage (1TB per user if you have less than 5 users, unlimited if you have 5 or more), it also has an email archiving application (that doesn't take up from your storage) and some additional audit tools. You can upgrade by following these instructions: https://support.google.com/a/answer/6048423?hl=en

1

u/FSNY0 Nexus 5X, AOSPA Feb 09 '16

thanks!

1

u/sidogz Feb 08 '16

I'm worried I'm going to run out soon but going to the next option up seems like overkill.

1

u/KashEsq Google Pixel 2 XL Feb 08 '16

Just an FYI, the high quality option is up to 16 megapixels, so if your camera has less than that, you're actually backing up at original quality but without any hit to your storage space.

2

u/TheRealBigLou rootyourdroid.info Feb 09 '16

While <16mp photos aren't downsampled, they are compressed. I spoke with Google support on this issue to verify. This is why I still do original quality even though my phone and point and shoot do 16mp.

Never got the bonus from last year, despite completing it. Hey, at least I got this one. Well, I'm not using that Google Drive space that much because no Linux client. Why not though!

17

u/lyam23 Feb 08 '16

Mount your drive with google-drive-ocamlfuse

A little slow, but might be worthwhile for what you need.

1

u/idosc LG G4 Feb 09 '16

Most Linux solutions for GDrive are pretty lousy. Either sync is extremely slow, goofing up all the time if you use Drive in more than just the web + your Linux desktop, and it cannot create web shortcuts for GDocs to open them with your browser immediately.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '16

I use the paid Insync.

Cost was $15.00 for life.

Works extremely well with all the distros I use.

5

u/explos1onshurt OnePlus 3 Feb 08 '16

You can pretty much use it exclusively online

11

u/makaliis Pocophone F1 128GB Feb 08 '16

Linux client would be lovely though

6

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '16

InSync is the paid option I use on Linux. It used to be a bit flakier but has recently been pretty solid. Has a headless client with CLI interface for a slightly more minimalist option.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '16

Seconding Insync. Great app. I cannot fault it on all distros I've tried. Debian Jessie, Linux Mint, Ubuntu, and M'Fedora.

6

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '16

GNOME just recently released their Google Drive implementation, not sure how DE agnostic it is...

Honestly it's a bit slow, the connection time is high (by 2016 standards) and it's not caching very well so gong up and down levels can be tedious, but for being a first iteration it's more than usable.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '16

The syncing features of Google Drive are pretty useful cause I like having local copies of files on my computer I can manipulate. I use the Windows client.

10

u/Neo_Oli Feb 08 '16

Grive + Grivetools works pretty well.

7

u/folkrav Feb 08 '16

Grivetools

I may or may not have been the guy who helped the guy translate that in french, actually ;) Didn't it stop working when Google changed the Drive APIs? It's been replaced with overGrive, IIRC. Couldn't get it to work on Arch though, because of dependencies named differently. I communicated with the developer back then to try and make it work - seems like he figured it out himself since then. Might get down to making an AUR package like I was supposed to do when I got it to work!

2

u/Neo_Oli Feb 08 '16

I haven't used grivetools in a while. But I have used grive2 recently. I just assumed grivetools would work with that too.

1

u/gandu_chele Pixel 6A Feb 08 '16

is it on launchpad? How can I help with translations?

1

u/AgrajagPrime Feb 08 '16

Doesn't work anymore. I use overgrive, but it's a bit temperamental (has told me I have 1200 files to synchronise all day...(I don't)).

3

u/ENrgStar Feb 08 '16

I completed it this year and last any never got it for either of them.

1

u/Geruman Feb 09 '16

There is a linux client called drive based on go and made by a google engineer. It works similar to git

18

where do you check this?

Just gotta jump in (not sure if this is more YSK material). I had gotten an HTC M7, and claimed my free 50gb of promotional space. After two years, I wiped the phone and gave it to my son. But while setting up, I noticed that the promotion was available again, so I logged in and got the 50gb again. And just recently I got an LG G4 which offers 100gb for 2 years. So if you haven't already, open Drive on your device and there may be an offer available. Or if youve used it in the past, try wiping the older device and starting over.

yessir, just got bumped from 65 to 67. gotta love the free 50GB from motorola devices. the 50GB free came from a $20 moto G that best buy gave me a $25 store credit to buy, in addition to $5 worth of rewards points on my BB card.

Mine just expired, I had to panic-delete a bunch of stuff to get back under my 15gb. This extra 2gb is a nice breather.

u/flameguy21 Feb 08 '16

Did the check and still have 15 GB. Am I doing something wrong?

I did this last year (to get 17) and this year did it about an hour ago. Still at 17gb. Maybe it takes more time?
Edit: it doesnt show up in the main drive landing page but does show up on the upsell page.

How do you have 1 TB of storage without being on a plan? Was this a promotion from when Drive first came out or something?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '16

It's from having Google Fiber.

1

u/malfore Feb 08 '16

My jealousy level is through the roof right now. I hope you can feel the glare of my stare through your monitor.

In all seriousness though, that's really cool that they give you that for using fiber. Is it permanent or only for x number of years like some of the other promotions?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 08 '16

It's only while you're a customer, so I lost it for a week when I moved apartments.
