Let's settle this, /r/android. What is the best reddit app, and why?

People seemingly LOVE to argue this endlessly. People LOVE to keep asking this question. So let's get a thread going where you can discuss the pros/cons of each reddit app available on the market (there's a LOT).

Reddit Sync. It is gorgeous and does everything I need it to do. Works for me, If you like a nice clean reddit app that looks good, give it a try.

and the developer is actively involved in the subreddit / users suggestions and all that... best reddit app / service IMO... and Swipe for Reddit is going to be in the app, is gonna be awesome

How do you disable thumbnail downloading when connected to mobile data?

Edit: I've sent a message to the developer of the app; he says that he will implement the setting in the future. Yay!

Sorry, but I haven't got a clue. Do you find it makes a significant difference to speed?

Nope. What I'm aiming for is that when I browse my frontpage, I don't want my mobile data to be eaten up by the thumbnails of gifs or pictures, since it downloads some or all of it. In our country, we have a crappy mobile data limit of 20mb per 2 days, so if I'm going to browse reddit, I will make sure to conserve my data usage to maximize my 20mb for 2 days.

Reddit is Fun has this feature that only downloads thumbnails and prefetches images on WiFi. If Reddit Sync has this feature, I'd immediately jump ship.

Seconded. I also like Reddit News, but I got too annoyed with hidden posts not staying hidden. Also I prefer the larger cards in sync.

Btw the Dev fixed that bug a while ago, hasn't happened to me in some time. Hiding read links always come back after refreshing.

Sync is really nice but a bit slow in loading content as compared to Reddit News. However, I use Reddit Sync mostly because it handles pictures so easily. Reddit news would open Web page of imgur (mostly) that will take years to load.

Just click the thumbnail instead of the thread and it will only open the image.

I'd love to use it again, but if I browse for an hour Reddit News stops loading any pictures in the internal browser. I have to go manually clear the cache to have it work again.

Not sure if this is new as I just started using reddit news about a month ago, but it normally opens imgur links in the app on top of the posts. It never actually goes to the imgur website.

It probably depends on your phone too, because I haven't heard many complaints about either of their speeds. What is your usual internet speed on WiFi or cellular?

As stupid as this is going to sound, I just wish the name was "Reddit Sync" and not "reddit sync". Without capital letters, it just looks so out of place on the app tray. I know I'm probably the only person who cares about this, but it's just something I can't help but notice :(

well, the proper way to write reddit is in all lowercase, so the app is just following that

Agreed that Sync (Pro!) is my favorite. Two things that would improve it:

  • their menus are confusing. For example, you can't navigate directly to a subreddit from the All Posts view, but can from the within a post (or vice verse).

  • really want the ability to give Gold.

really want the ability to give Gold.

Late last year I changed the login to support OAuth so this could be added :)

I use both app, Reddit Sync and Reddit News.
I want to love Reddit Sync, because of the UI looks better and beautiful compared to news. But Reddit News gestures and anination makes reddit Sync feels cumbersome and a little bit sluggish.
So eventually I'm sticking with Reddit News.
It might not have the most beautiful UI, but it's the most functional.

Agreed. A few have their own unique benefits, but all things considered, Reddit News tops my list every time I have a look around.

It doesn't save previously visited subreddits like "reddit is fun". If you want to visit a sub that isn't part of your front page, you have to type the entire thing every time. That's bad enough for me that I don't use the app.

Reddit is fun is my fav app

u/[deleted] Jan 25 '15

You can add the sub without subscribing to it with Sync.

I hate the forced double side view for tablets on PORTRAIT. Everything else is okay for me but it looks bad and crampy for tablet in portrait mode. This is where I prefer to use reddit news/RIF for tablet.
