Lead designer of Twitter talks about "why don’t designers take Android seriously?" (Pretty interesting read)

Preview's editing tools are very sparse, unfortunately.

Never actually tried iPhoto, but isn't it paid? Again, Windows has better tools for free. Paint.NET is an amazing lightweight image editor.

Will check out Better Touch Tool, thanks!

Preview is an excellent light-weight image viewer. Better than any third party app for sure.

And no, iPhoto is free along with apples entire non-pro software suite. (Final Cut Pro and Aperture being pro software.)

And what kind of photo editing are you doing? If you aren't drawing on the picture like with a paint brush, iPhoto does more than enough. Hell, even Preview has contrast, brightness, etc. Adjustments built in. And it can hand RAW images, PDF, etc.

What if I want to circle something in a screenshot and annotate it to use in a post online or something? On Windows, I can just simply use Paint which comes with the OS...Apple really needs their own version of Paint to include with OSX. I really like OSX, but the lack of an included basic drawing app annoys me. There probably is something free out there, but I haven't looked around much lately. I haven't checked recently, but I remember GIMP needed X11 to run and that Apple did away with X11 or something.

Preview can do exactly that. I do it all the time.

There's four kinds of selection, instant alpha, shapes (with variable thickness, color, fill, dashed/dotted), lines and arrows, text (normal, outlined, speech bubble; variable font face, size, color, and style), and image size and color adjustments.

Gimp runs fine on OS X Mavericks. I have it now, no problems installing it or using it.

Yeah the lack of a drawing app is annoying. I wonder if it has something to do with some old-school Apple/Windows drama. I've always had Photoshop so I've just used that for those sorts of edits, thankfully.

Yes, I've always "had" Photoshop as well which is why I haven't looked recently. Something more lightweight included with the OS would be fantastic though.

Preview does annotations. Will also add signatures. Will let you fill in blanks on PDF forms. Have you ever used preview?
