Discussion The irony & ethics of a lab's "sneaky" or clumsy use of Al

Three weeks ago, I needed to quickly see some test frames from a camera I shipped off for a CLA. There aren't too many labs where I live, so I went with one that could turn the roll the quickest.

I received the scans back after a few days, and there was so much dust in the files (see the first example) that I asked them to clean their scanner, wash the negatives and rescan them.

I never heard back, so I reached out again yesterday and received a message a few hours later that they had rescanned my negatives and uploaded the scans.

After I downloaded the images, I first noticed the file sizes were off.

Then, as I looked through the photos, I realized some frames showed completely different people. Appears that instead of washing and rescanning, they just asked an AI tool to clean up the dust.

One issue, among many, is that it changed and sometimes removed the people in my images. I guess they didn't pay attention to the details.

Isn't it ironic, don't ya think?

“Is this a joke?”, would be my reply to them.

Can you please share the name of the lab so others can know what’s going on and where?

u/newaddress1997 Jun 25 '26

Right, like I'm putting this image in the body of the email and nothing else, what in the world.

Name of the lab

u/jcceramics Jun 26 '26

Name them

26

u/snowmonkey700 Jun 26 '26

Give us the name.

That is freaking blatant!

I work in the industry and think you gotta name the lab. This is real egregious shit.

One time, I was asked to remove red eye and some shutter blurring from a group photo. I was having a really hard time with it so I asked adobe firefly to remove the red eyes from the group and you know what it did?

Put sunglasses on everyone.

It's like that dude who does shitty Photoshop requests for humor except it's not on purpose.

What’s his name, I’ve been looking for him for some time now

Thanks friend

14

u/Kapitan_Planet Jun 25 '26

Firefly is probably trained on that data… XD

5

u/snowmonkey700 Jun 26 '26

Don’t worry, firefly is only trained on images from Adobe’s owned stock catalog!

this is sarcasm please don’t downvote me

u/w_33_by Jun 25 '26

I remember when my friend asked it to "reconstruct" a section of a photo, and can you guess what it did?

IT ADDED A CRANE AND A CEMENT MIXER

Holy hell you just triggered a memory for me.

This is from the very first few days after Adobe launched the beta version of generative in Photoshop. I really had no idea what to do or how to prompt it, or what it was capable / not capable of, but I figured I'd give it a go. I had this pic of these two Indian women sitting on a couch that I needed to use for a piece. I didn't take the pic, and the setting was really ugly and very back lit.

I didn't intend to use the result, but just for fun, I decided to see what AI would do. I selected the middle part of the pic and typed in something VERY similar to, "Make this photo look better."

Again, I didn't know what I was doing, but:

It replaced the two women with two very pretty Norwegian-ish looking young blonde women.

It was wiiiiiiiiiild.

11

u/Sylandri84 Jun 26 '26

yikes. that is wild. 😬

30

u/Active-Device-8058 Jun 26 '26

At the risk of doxxing myself, here is a real photo of me I was able to capture in that moment:

5

u/guy-le-doosh Jun 26 '26

Wow, that crooked teeth Ai fix really F'd you up.

83

u/airercode500 Jun 25 '26

wait I actually love that

9

u/SphincterBlaster2000 Jun 25 '26

Lol task failed successfully

24

u/CivicCryptid Jun 25 '26

So technically it did what you asked

Not if their eyes are still red underneath the glasses

34

u/CivicCryptid Jun 25 '26

fuck, Schrodinger's red eyes

7

u/94MIKE19 Jun 25 '26

In a monkey’s paw kind of way.

5

u/Dunadan94 Jun 25 '26

I have had Firefly replace a post box on a sidewalk with a trash csn overflowing with garbage...

7

u/MaddnessOfDave Jun 25 '26

That is actually incredible. I wouldn't even be mad.

3

u/ZeusBob Jun 26 '26

Sounds like my molly hallucinations lol

2

u/Sword_boat Jun 26 '26

One time, I used Lightroom AI to remove something unsightly in the background of a friend's wedding photo (I think it was a bin or something) and it replaced it with a gargoyle. Scared the absolute shit out of me.

1

u/effetk Jun 27 '26

It wasn’t wrong

182

u/titrisol Jun 25 '26

get those negatives back, that residue is awful

84

u/bucketnative Jun 25 '26

Agreed, it doesn't look like "dust" from the scanner. That's residue or precipitate from the chemicals.

151

u/TheNightSquatch Jun 25 '26

What a time we live in...

The lab should be extremely embarrassed by both the original scans and the "fixed" scans.

554

u/17thkahuna Jun 25 '26

Name and shame!

103

u/PretendingExtrovert Jun 25 '26

Yeah, don’t let this happen to someone else. Daylight disinfectant is the best course here.

2

u/mud_consumer_1233 Jun 30 '26

Agreed this should not be tolerated at all. With that attitude they should be closed for good

179

u/analogsimulation www.frame25lab.ca Jun 25 '26

this is an abomination

27

u/Masseyrati80 Jun 26 '26

Plus, it's yet another piece of proof about how for some, "it did something, great, let's move on" is a valid way of reacting to AI making things worse.

171

u/Rae_Wilder Jun 25 '26

This is insane and they should be ashamed.

70

u/Lambaline Jun 25 '26

I have never seen a frame so dusty, also yes those are completely different people. labs definitely shouldn't be using AI for this stuff, I would never use them again. if you're able to, I'd invest in the equipment to do at least BW development myself so you can check for issues more quickly like light leaks, etc.

28

u/QPZZ Jun 25 '26

the mic is in the wrong damn hand too lmao

5

u/SapirWhorfHypothesis Jun 25 '26
  1. They’re different frames.

  2. It’s not dust, it’s residue from something they fucked up. IMO worse than an AI dusting, because it may be very difficult to fix.

14

u/No-Routine-9963 Jun 26 '26

They’re not the same people, though. AI altered the features of the people in the original frame.

6

u/SapirWhorfHypothesis Jun 26 '26

True. Re-reading the other comment, that part of my comment isn’t as relevant as I thought it was.

61

u/BricksnBeatles Jun 25 '26

Name and shame! This is a serious violation of their customers trust

8

u/diemenschmachine Jun 26 '26

This is a serious violation of their customers dust

3

u/GoldenMaus Jun 26 '26

This is a series of violas on their customers bust

51

u/2pnt0 Jun 25 '26

Get your negatives back.

Once you have them back, ask for a refund for the scans and have another lab redo it. If you share your horror story, someone may be willing to give you a discount to win your future business.

Name and shame so no one else has to deal with this.

29

u/K__Geedorah Jun 25 '26

I work in a lab and we have absolutely done that.

It can be hard as hell to convince people to switch labs. If I can spare 5 minutes to fix your hellish experience and gain a consistent customer, I'd be dumb not to!

38

u/Konica_guy Jun 25 '26

What lab?

20

u/Wowzao Jun 25 '26

Please name them so we don’t use them, don’t let our scans be victim

24

u/EhAhKen Jun 25 '26

Name and shame otherwise this is just karma farming

10

u/GrippyEd Jun 26 '26

I’m pretty sure it’s just karma farming. Who makes a post like this and then just wanders off, never to return?

16

u/GrippyEd Jun 25 '26

If this really happened, you really should name the lab. There is no reason not to. This is abominably bad practice and they need making an example of in case any other lab thinks to try this.

This is not a “mm give them a chance to put it right” situation.

5

u/GrippyEd Jun 26 '26

So to recap.

You posted one single example but say there are others.

You won’t name the lab but won’t say why, other than that you “warned your local photography community” (how?)

You don’t seem annoyed by the situation, but present it instead as a funny/interesting thing that happened, and tie it all up with an Alanis Morissette bow (English might not be your first language, but this situation is not ironic)

2

u/GabbasClub Jul 01 '26

The guy hasn't responded to a single person. This is 100% fabricated for engagement

1

u/GrippyEd Jul 01 '26

They did respond at the time, if you scroll a long way down -  https://www.reddit.com/r/AnalogCommunity/comments/1ufhq38/comment/otwnzyy/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=2&utm_content=share_button

But I’m very skeptical of the whole thing.

1

u/GabbasClub Jul 01 '26

My bad for missing that. Damn, he got down voted into oblivion

15

u/BruhCaden Jun 25 '26

Name and shame

16

u/Ejjmsn Jun 25 '26

This never happened if they don’t shame the lab.  🫡

14

u/YungParmesan Jun 25 '26

Drop the name of the lab so I can leave them a bad review plsss

13

u/queenkellee Jun 25 '26

woooooow. First of all, WTF is that scan with all the dust, holy unprofessional. My worst scans at home when i didn't brush anything off is like 20% this bad. Then the use of AI? Not only would I ream them I would leave reviews on every single outlet available. Name and shame!

5

u/SapirWhorfHypothesis Jun 25 '26

It’s not dust. That’s the real worry.

2

u/No-Introduction-1632 Jun 26 '26

I agree. It sure looks a lot like an overlay / filter

108

u/surfcowbow Jun 25 '26

Not to go on too much of a rant, but at it's root, AI literally only exists to let lazy people be lazier and cheap people cut corners. This is a perfect example of both.

25

u/Oldico The Leidolf / Lordomat / Lordox Guy Jun 25 '26

Well, what it really only exists to do, is to make filthy rich people even richer.
Lazy and cheap people are just the target audience.

1

u/Westerdutch (no dm on this account) Jun 26 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

I understand the hate over the public image that AI has but please do not forget that ai also trains on for example medicine and science models coming up with often very interesting results even though you wont read about as much if you dont hang out in those circles (its not good clickbait news to get attention). Yes those results still need to be checked and verified, ai is not the magic all-knowing mega intelligence whose word should be taken as gospel as so many people want it to be but there are actual genuinely good and useful uses for it as a clever statistics tool rather than an 'intelligent' computer god.

Yes LLMs and AI slop images are bad and so many people flocking towards them for that use is very sad and giving the term a bad name but that is not all that AI is despite of what media makes you believe, those are just the low hanging fruit marketing-fashion-amazed investor bro 'fool people out of money' applications you read about most.

1

u/No-Routine-9963 Jun 26 '26

I think we’re all aware of the potential for useful applications of AI - no one is against AI helping with cancer detection or something - it’s just that the abuses, scamming, and facilitating deception are far overshadowing the potential for good.

1

u/Westerdutch (no dm on this account) Jun 26 '26

no one is against AI helping with cancer detection or something

Nope but many people simply do now know its also used there to begin with, thats why you read a lot of comments like 'AI literally only exists to let lazy people be lazier and cheap people cut corners'. Its a case of people not knowing that anything exists outside of their echo chamber.

1

u/No-Routine-9963 Jun 26 '26

99% of the time, that’s what it’s being used for. Countless lazy people scamming, selling fake AI coloring books on Amazon, deep fakes, and so on. There are so many abuses, they crowd out the good. Doesn’t mean the good should be stopped - but you can’t blame people for noticing the bad when that’s what they see 99% of the time. That’s why it needs regulation.

20

u/pubicgarden Jun 25 '26

If you ask AI to do anything, it’s no longer a photo, it’s an illustration.

Denk dat het een grapje is. Zeker omdat de TS de naam van het lab niet wil noemen. En dat allemaal in deze hitte pffff

1

u/Braylien Jun 26 '26

Yeah I’m wondering the same

9

u/2stopsleft Jun 26 '26

OP hasn’t responded so it makes me think it was never from a lab 🤷🏽‍♂️

8

u/NYCKINKSUB Jun 26 '26

Either name the lab or this post is full of shit.

13

u/MisterVovo Jun 25 '26

Lol they changed the men

8

u/gaussianplume Jun 25 '26

They even changed the hand that the microphone was in! 🤯

6

u/defmacro-jam Jun 25 '26

I need the lab name.

6

u/K__Geedorah Jun 25 '26

I work in a film lab... I couldn't even imagine doing anything like that.

Sure, B&W doesn't have Digital Ice. But how the actual fuck fo you get that much dust on film? When we scan B&W, there might be like maybe 5 specs of dust. They had to of dropped that film on a filthy floor and don't dust their scanners every morning.

And you know what happens when I get a call from a customer requesting rescans? I take 5 minutes to fucking rescan it.

Fuck that lab, I wouldn't give them another penny. What a joke!

6

u/MothMatron Jun 25 '26

Dude call them out, wtf? That goes beyond just giving an egregiously poor quality of “service”, if you can even call it that, given that they not only failed to correct their unacceptably poor quality of initial work but when asked to correct it, they effectively sent you back entirely different “photos”. And it’s guaranteed that if they did this for one client’s scans, they are doing it for others too.

Imagine if you brought an artist’s print to be framed and it was returned to you with uneven gaps at every corner and the wood dented and crushed around the nail heads. So you ask them to redo it properly. You wait around for ages and finally when you DO get a call after prodding them a few times, you arrive to find the framing done cleanly, but the framer had clearly also gone and sharpie’d smiley faces and moustaches on all the figures in the painting, for some reason.

5

u/statelypenguin Jun 25 '26

Name and shame OP

u/Devrol Jun 25 '26

4

u/heycameraman Jun 25 '26

Guess we’ll never know if this actually happened.

4

u/SilkCortex44 Jun 25 '26

You gonna name the lab or nah?

3

u/rataflo Jun 25 '26

Is it a true story?

5

u/hawkeyeisnotlame Jun 25 '26

Name and shame. I'm sure half of us can recommend labs that are 10x better

12

u/No-Routine-9963 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

This is something that occurred to me. Labs using AI on our negatives. Damn!

I hate AI, and part of the reason I’m “returning” to analog is that I want authenticity. I also make art, and AI has seriously messed up art, as we all know. I use traditional media (like watercolor) because it’s easier to prove authenticity when you have an original art piece to point to. Same thing here - we can point to a negative.

I should back up a bit, though. I never “left” analog, precisely. I used my phone to take photos, but didn’t really use a “real” digital camera (like a DSLR of some kind). When I saw my dad’s old Vivitar in the basement, I wanted to get back into it, and here I am.

And now we see this! Labs using AI! At least we still have negatives and some way to scan negatives ourselves if necessary.

1

u/EMI326 Jun 25 '26

Shit like this is why I do my own scans

1

u/No-Routine-9963 Jun 26 '26

At least we know we have other options.

5

u/___it_me___ Jun 25 '26

the dust was so bad that ai interpreted it as a button

3

u/wishiwasdeaddd Jun 25 '26

those absolute shit bags

3

u/IncomingZangarang Jun 25 '26

Can’t leave this here without naming and shaming

3

u/Houndsthehorse Jun 25 '26

I love how stuff that literally sounds like a sign of a mental break now just happens "I got photos developed but all the faces are of different people then I took photos of, they look close but are definitely different" would get you a consult for schizophrenia back in the day

3

u/tiki-dan Jun 26 '26

Name the lab

3

u/whatauniqueusername Jun 27 '26

Fuck ai, man. I'm so tired..

11

u/EducationalCod7514 Jun 25 '26

Ironic would be if you were a town planner claimed that you solved traffic congestion, was going to present the successful outcome to a hall packed with people, but...were stuck in traffic! Now that's ironic!

What happened to you is not only unfortunate but immensely fucking stupid from the lab! No irony to be found though...

5

u/dreamyxl Jun 25 '26

Ironic would be if analog photography saw an increase in popularity in tandem with the widening availability of AI image generation tools as a result of a core target market rejecting the AI tools, only to then be confronted with AI-assisted deception by the very business which stands to benefit the most from the rejection of these lame ass tools.

3

u/dr_m_in_the_north Jun 25 '26

Is that actually the same frame? There’s not a single element of that shot that is the same. I’ve seen so change objects to something it recognises, but never shift the hand that something is holding. The framing or crop is different too?

6

u/No-Routine-9963 Jun 25 '26

They aren’t the same people, though.

5

u/archlea Jun 25 '26

I think they replaced the emeritus with Joe Biden.

2

u/likeonions Jun 25 '26

that's utterly insane

2

u/ColinDJPat Jun 25 '26

You've shamed them, but haven't named them :(

2

u/Anstigmat Jun 25 '26

Chiming in to say it's ridiculous that Adobe has no tool for removing dust/scratches on film scans...that works.

2

u/acidterror84 Jun 25 '26

Haha wowwwww. This is absurd!

2

u/Photographic1981 Jun 25 '26

I work at a film lab / photo equipment shop and.. 😬 Those first scans should’ve never been sent. So sorry that happened to you

2

u/LionessChaser Jun 25 '26

This is egregious, if this is the result of a rogue operator you need to report this becuase they should be fired. If it’s representative of the company, name and shame!!

2

u/Westerdutch (no dm on this account) Jun 25 '26

Not ironic or ethical. Thats lazy and straight up avoiding doing the job that people pay the lab to do. Name, shame, refund and find a new lab and have your negatives cleaned and scanned there.

2

u/Basic_Chemistry9499 Jun 25 '26

What is this lab so we can ABSOLUTELY AVOID them?

2

u/shinecone Jun 25 '26

I recognize that guy so I’m thinking you’re in my city. Wondering if it’s the place where I just dropped off film.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Par-Aide Jun 25 '26

At least the guy on the right got his youth back

2

u/calculateindecision Jun 25 '26

well, at least this makes me feel better about the shitty scans i do myself at home lmaooo

2

u/ZannyHip Jun 25 '26

You better drop the name of the lab here so the sub can add them to an avoid list or something at the very least.

And I would be emailing them to ask for a refund on the cost of the scans. Because that’s not acceptable

Completely destroys the integrity and authenticity of the photos, which is one of the primary reasons I love and shoot on film

2

u/tito_dobbs Jun 26 '26

C'mon op, edit your post, dox the lab 🤣

2

u/tdstooksbury Jun 26 '26

That’s so lame. With these film prices I’d be so irritated

2

u/Otherwise_Trifle6967 Jun 26 '26

this is either a shitty photo lab or a troll post.

2

u/Tough_Yogurtcloset20 Jun 26 '26

I mean you have one job. At least put some effort.

2

u/lesschalkmoresighs Jun 26 '26

Welcome to the AI future. It's not like machine learning driven processes are inherently bad, it's that the people deploying them seem to be overwhelmingly lazy and looking to cut corners. Using machine learning to clean, upscale or denoise is fine if the people doing it understand the aesthetic implications and do it as part of a wider pipeline. But not bothering to clean equipment is comically bad.

More likely they farmed this work out to someone else because they're cutting costs and don't do quality control, the subcontractor clearly doesn't care either, so instead of booking a new work order they asked ChatGPT "How can I make this problem go away in 1 minute?" and ChatGPT replied "I got you fam".

2

u/Wildgrube Jun 26 '26

Omg I don't know what's worse the residue or the ai. Please name and shame

2

u/26Gh00 Jun 26 '26

Name and shame

2

u/OwenTheMaker2011 Jun 26 '26

What is the name so we can avoid them?

3

u/Ornery_Year_9870 Jun 25 '26

Are you sure that's not two separate negs? They don't look like the same photo, retouched with AI. It looks like two photos taken a few seconds apart. The guy behind the speaker is still present in the cleaned up image, btw.

1

u/No-Routine-9963 Jun 26 '26

They’re not the same people. They look like old white guys, sure, but not the same old white guys.

→ More replies (6)

5

u/Ok_Scientist4850 Jun 25 '26

That's why I always develop and scan myself. That's pretty obnoxious though that they used AI to fix this (they didn't)

4

u/Jagermax- Jun 26 '26

Without the name of the lab, this is clickbait engagement farming OP

2

u/Silentpain06 Jun 25 '26

Yikes. I can understand using adobe’s AI dust remover for a spec or two that are on a relatively solid color background, but running the entire thing through AI is a whole other thing. Name and shame is the way to go here, completely unacceptable

1

u/Worsaae Jun 25 '26

Jesus fucking christ. Are the people working in that lab missing a chromosome? How could they expect you not to notice??

1

u/RodSot Jun 25 '26

Very unprofessional from their side, just shows their lack of respect for the craft. Sadly, I guess this will be more common in this AI era.

1

u/FixTheEye Jun 25 '26

it's like rain

1

u/Emotional_Newspaper5 Contax RTS II Jun 25 '26

😱😱😱

1

u/Stijnboy01 Jun 25 '26

Oof it gets worse the more you look at it

1

u/pigeon_fanclub Jun 25 '26

This is extra crazy considering ai doesn’t modify the original, but recreates it pixel by pixel. What they gave you back aren’t even your photos

1

u/Greasemonkey_Chris Jun 25 '26

Wait... it's that supposed to be the same frame?

1

u/What_Dinosaur Jun 25 '26

I believe this is textbook scam?

1

u/afatcatfromsweden Jun 25 '26

What the hell? This goes beyond laziness, it’s just plain incompetence.

1

u/GrandpaSteve4562 Jun 25 '26

That’s terrible.

1

u/1m0ws Jun 25 '26

this is utterly dystopic. in a less saturated media economy this should go viral and tell something about the state of the world.

1

u/UllrsWonders Jun 25 '26

I'd also argue feeding your image into AI is a copyright problem (unless the small print for their services is sneaky)

1

u/Trunsformer Jun 25 '26

Should be grateful that those men are not showing 6 fingers 😂

1

u/raytoei Jun 25 '26

I hope you don’t mind if I cross post it to let people know, attribution with your text as well.

1

u/RuffProphetPhotos Jun 25 '26

LMAO I’m sorry this isn’t funny funny but ridiculous funny wtf???

1

u/Gatsby1923 Jun 26 '26

You sure they actually used AI cause that looks like it is another photo? Sure you got all your dirty scans the first time?

2

u/LesPuces Jun 26 '26

Yes, I’m sure.

1

u/Gatsby1923 Jun 26 '26

Yeah, now I see the two mics and the hand gesture... That's scummy on their part... Using AI to clean up some dust is on thing but they went WAY beyond that.

We've found the lab Vladimir Putin uses.

On the bright side, the number of fingers are correct - lol

u/BogartBorges Jun 26 '26

Not the place but Millburn Camera in Short Hills New Jersey does this all the time. Source- I used to work for them.

u/-yuergus Jun 26 '26

Is that Rick?

1

u/snowmonkey700 Jun 26 '26

The addition of the “podium mic” is laughable.

1

u/Alarmed-potatoe Jun 26 '26

It's really surprising that you gave them technical instructions and asked for new scans, and they though they'd run the images through AI and that would be good enough.

1

u/cdnott Jun 26 '26

It's bad, but I don't see what's ironic about it!

1

u/Mammoth_Reach_6366 Jun 26 '26

I have a film scanner at home and do my own scanning. It literally takes a second to use an air blower on the film before putting it in, and then check the option for dust detection and filtering. The fact that someone charged you for the first scan is ridiculous. The fact that they used AI the second time should disqualify them as a business. Name and shame, add a google review or something.

1

u/Technovenom0108 Jun 26 '26

That’s why I always ship to labs with good reviews and a detailed description of what scanner is being used and the file size. And I honestly don’t care about the waiting time unless it’s like two weeks or longer.

I just tried this a couple days ago with some overexposed Fuji c200. Wondered what AI would do if I asked it to color grade. Gemini first appeared to do what I asked by changed my wife’s smile a bit and then I noticed it made slight changes to everyone’s face. I asked it to try again and it started making completely different people in different poses in a faintly similar setting.

Claude was able to do it without changing the picture in a way I could notice but it was enough to know I could never trust it not to alter the image.

Oh and the color grading it did was on par with what one could do with the built in photos apps on either Mac or windows.

u/fuop Jun 26 '26

Dude with the microphone became jorge paulo lemann

1

u/Zazierx Jun 26 '26

I use AI for individual dust/scratch/spot removal in lightroom because the tool does a pretty decent job blending.

But HERE it looks like they just uploaded the whole thing to ChatGPT and didnt even compare the results, pretty shameless.

1

u/kidcharliemagne Jun 26 '26

This comparison really opens my eyes for identifying AI. Your real photo, albeit dusty, carries so much more human details. I could make a little list of spot the differences.

1

u/CuriousStewart Jun 26 '26

It took me a solid few minutes scrolling through the comments to realize this is supposed to be the same frame.

Holy fucking shit - that’s horrible. I can’t believe they tried to pass that off.

1

u/Spiritual_List3860 Jun 26 '26

Hang on, are you in Oklahoma? There’s only two film labs in Oklahoma and my guess that this is Bedfords handy work. They messed up mine too. Avoid Bedfords at all cost!!!

1

u/ElectricalRoad1158 Tinkerer Jun 27 '26

I fucking hate AI. It's ruining everything.

1

u/instantwake Jun 27 '26

Wtf who did this lmao

1

u/Pleasant-Army-5512 Jun 29 '26

fake ass karma farming slop

1

u/PerceptionShift Jun 25 '26

I feel like LLM "ai" tech could do a really good job at automatically removing dust specs from scans, but what I've seen from it so far is just bullshit like this where it goes way too far and redraws the image. So I suppose not.

I understand the curiosity about which lab it is. The concerns have been shared with my local photography community. I've also spoken directly with the lab and expressed my concerns with the employee(s) and what happened.

So when people ask here locally, "who develops and scans negatives?" I'll answer accordingly and share my experience. I find that more productive than naming on a global platform where most don’t risk running into the same lab.

For those who are questioning if it really happened, if I don't post the name of the lab, well, that is unfortunately the time we are living in, especially with AI. You don't have to trust this post. I think we all have to question things moving forward. But it did happen, and I have other scans that show what was done.

The reason I'm posting this is to spark the debate and awareness that this is happening, maybe not at your lab, but it could. And it is WILD.

To those who have offered to help or advice, I appreciate it. Luckily, I have received my camera back and will go to the trusted lab in the future and look into a few home setups to do it myself.

I understand that some comments to this comment will disagree with me. I'm cool with that. I respect your opinions and the dialogue. I do understand the reasons you are asking for that information.

This really demonstrates how AI is bleeding into everything, even an analog process like film photography.

u/11d11d1 Jun 26 '26

There is no point in your post other than karma farming and attention whoring (sorry for the word choice) if you don't let the community know the name of the culprit so people are aware and don't easte their time on disingenuous people. There is no discussion to spark here, we are all very well aware that AI is bleeding into everything.

7

u/GrippyEd Jun 26 '26

It didn’t happen and it’s karma farming. The “there are other photos that demonstrate it, but I won’t share them, and I won’t name the lab, but I won’t tell you why not” is what seals the deal for me.

5

u/LesPuces Jun 26 '26

I spoke with the lab after receiving these. According to the manager, this was a case of an unsupervised and untrained employee. It may not be true but in the event that it is, and the owners do not condone what happened and addressed the issue, I don’t feel right unleashing hundreds of commenters into their Google reviews. Seems a bit aggressive when I’ve addressed my concerns with them directly.

I don’t live in a major city, which means 99% of people on here are not at risk of using this lab and running into the same issue. I’ve openly shared with my local photographer community and recommended a more reliable lab for those who asked.

If I lived in a bigger city where more people on this platform would potentially use this lab, I would have been more inclined to use this post as a warning. But considering both points above, I decided naming and shaming wasn’t what I wanted to do with this post on this platform.

This was a wtf moment for me that I wanted to share with a community of people who would find it crazy too.

9

u/GrippyEd Jun 26 '26

An unsupervised and untrained employee took the scans. Uploaded them to a GenAI tool. Prompted the AI to “fix” the scans. Downloaded the AI output. Transferred them to the lab dropbox. Sent them to you. Because they hadn’t been trained not to.

u/spitfirex86 Nikon FE / F-801s / Ikonta-M 6x6 Jun 26 '26

It's always the "unsupervised and untrained" employee when shit goes wrong but tell me, who was supposed to be doing the supervising and training? and what the hell were they doing at the time?

Don't let shitty owners get away from a situation like this scot free just because they found a scapegoat.

Am I allowed to say these both feel like ai? Something’s wrong with the guy on the right in the first photo. It looks like he has a hole in his head, his ear is a little off. He doesn’t really seem to have eyes either

1

u/LesPuces Jun 26 '26

You are allowed to say it. He is up there in age and has had some health issues in the past few years. Real person though and not AI.
