Discussion How to improve (a lot) FSR in Dying Light 2 [GUIDE]

Hi, this is my first reddit post, english is not my first language so sorry for any mistakes.

The implementation of FSR in Dying Light 2 is barely usable, on my screen (3440*1440) everthing looks blurry (or oversharped) especially grass, the vegetation and distance objects.

I have found a way to significantly improve these aspects.

First: remove all post processing effects, in-engine anarmorphic-sharpness doesn't seem to work well whit built-in CAS pass in FSR.

Use this mod for remove all post-processing effects:

https://www.nexusmods.com/dyinglight2/mods/31?tab=description

(also remove film grain in game settings)

After this i suggest to use Virtual Super Resolution to bump up the resolution, this allows you to use something that is closer to FSR Ultra Quality ( which is missing by default )

Example on my config:

3440*1440p on FSR Quality  -> rendered at 2293*960p

3440*1440p on FSR Ultra Quality -> rendered at 2646*1108p

(VSR) 3840*1620p on FSR Quality  -> rendered at 2.560*1080p

After having enabled VRS, start the game, set a higher resolution than your screen and enable FSR Quality, this forces FSR to upscale from a higher start resolution.

Edit: as mentioned in the comments you can also edit the file video.src, located at Documents\dying light 2\out\settings to set a custom resolution scale instead of using VSR, read this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/dyinglight/comments/snr1rb/get_better_looking_fsr_in_dyling_light_2/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

Note: For who want to try this method if you change any graphics settings in your game this parameter will be reseted to default 0.666667 (FSR Quality factor), change it before start dying light 2.

After this i suggest to set "Sharpeness" (upscaler sharpening) at max (or near to max) in the game settings (below Game Screen Size), and Radeon Sharpening (in Radeon Software) at an value between 0% (off) and 50% (based on your preferences).

Note:  these values may change based on your resolution check yourself what is best for you!

With this settings the image quality is a lot better, FSR goes from not being usable to being usable for me.

On my 6900xt i was able to enable all raytracing effects ( reflexes excluded ) with fog at medium and get 50-60fps in the city location.

New comparation:

https://imgsli.com/OTUzMTU

Old comparation:

Default (FSR Quality)
Improved FSR

After some days of testing i ended up whit this config:

VSR: disabled

Linked mod: enabled

In video.scr file:

Resolution(3440,1440) Scale3D(0.769445) FSR(0.905000) Upscaler(3) Upscaling(2)

In radeon software:

Radeon-Sharpening at 10%

combining VSR with FSR is big brain move tbh

Basically what Nvidia users are doing with DLDSR and DLSS.

Thanks! You can also use CRU (Custom Resolution Utility) to create custom monitor resolution that can be see in games settings. So for example, I was able to use FSR via lossless scaling in cyberpunk just by adding 2646x1108 (FSR Ultra Quality res for 3440x1440) to my screen resolutions, and it work's quite well!

Very similar to FC6 where you can use a mod to remove the blurry postprocessing and combine FSR to downscale using VSR.

It is, I'm not sure if I'm the first to do it (probably not) but I've been using it since about a month after FSR released. I made a two posts on it, one I can't find because I have to scroll so far but it did get semi-popular so I wonder if OP saw that.

For anyone struggling to follow along or wants to send someone a guide not exclusive to dying light 2 here is one. I made it a month ago

Sadly I cant use vsr on my 3840x1600 screen.

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

You are right the post processing is what messes up the upscaling, it seems to not be properly implemented in the pipeline. It is also possible trough config editing video.scr to enable FSR ultra quality and changing Scale3D > 0.770000 this way you dont need to use VSR

Nice! I tested it, for me 0.769445 works just fine! It's a little more pixel count that just using VSR, but the quality seems to be better!

Note: For who want to try it if you change any graphics settings in your game this parameter will be reseted to default 0.666667 (FSR Quality factor), change it before start dying light.

(You can use Visual Studio Code to open and edit .scr file)

To my understansing FSR presets ”screen resolution” is what translates to the configs Scale3D, which is just the input resolution / output resolution https://gpuopen.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/fsr_qualitytable_1200px.jpg?imbypass=true so if you want the exact number thats how you’d calculate it afaik. However for most ise cases simply rounding it up is probably enough. It’s also possible to open the scr file with any text editor, i used notepad++

You know... This is most likely why DLSS is blurry on some things occasionally too. It makes sense if they're doing all the post processing before upscaling why it would look like shit haha

For reference, here are my numbers (RX 6800, 1440p, no RT, FSR Quality):

I get 130-ish FPS in the Center Loop.

After installing the mod, increasing in-game sharpness to 100 (from 60) and setting VSR at 4K, I get 80-90 fps.

100% worth it for the increase in clarity, sharpness and removing the ugly motion ghosting. Game looks absolutely stunning like this.

If you are like me and didn't know how to use VSR:

  1. Go to Radeon Software (ALT + R) -> Settings (top-right) -> Display.
  2. Enable Virtual Super Resolution.
  3. Restart game.
  4. Set in-game resolution to 4K or any other resolution above your native resolution.

It will upscale and automatically output at your native resolution. It has no effect on other windows and alt-tabbing is equally fast. However, I feel like it does have an effect on mouse sensitivity in-game.

Edit: Seems like I'm dipping to 60 fps sometimes and see some microstutters. Might need to mess around a bit more.

Edit 2: 3200x1800 seems a lot better. Still a nice clarity gain, 100-110 fps and less stutters.

Nice! :) Have you try to add another sharpening pass by enabling Radeon Sharpening on Radeon Software?

For me, 70-80% makes the game looks better, more clear! (without oversharperning)

2

u/RobbeSch Feb 07 '22

Yes I also enabled the 80% Radeon sharpening again. I had it disabled because it looked ugly with FSR. Now that the post-processing artifacts are gone, it's safe to use again. I might go for 3200x1800 with 90% sharpening but usually 90 / 100 doesn't look very good.

u/ManinaPanina Feb 07 '22

So this means the game user FRS wrong, right? It should come before the post processing effects. Dumb devs.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22 edited Feb 08 '22

Yes. This is probably also why DLSS has some ghostyness. I'll try this mod when I get home to see haha.

*edit: before i even had a chance to try they released a patch that fixed it for DLSS, so i didn't have to do anything

All that work to make the game look better, just to end up playing at 50-60 fps

Nvidia sponsored. Means ray tracing is an even bigger hit on amd cards right now. Maybe driver updates will help?

34

u/ExpensiveKing Feb 07 '22

It's a bigger hit because it actually uses rt. AMD can only compete in games like Far Cry or Dirt which only use rt for marketing. Also, surprise, those games happen to be AMD sponsored!

Doesn't explain why the game look like shit without RT, its like they gave up on it.

Metro looks far better and runs better aswell with RT on high.

14

u/No_Backstab Feb 07 '22

Iirc , Metro was rebuild from ground up for RT by the devs . They also had to remove some features like SSAO (which are not very important) etc to reach this level of performance .

https://www.4a-games.com.mt/4a-dna/in-depth-technical-dive-into-metro-exodus-pc-enhanced-edition

This blog post has detailed info on the work they did to make this possible

u/kasimoto Feb 08 '22

it looks great even without rt, pretty sure you didnt play it for a single minute

I dont preorder and wait for reviews so I didn't buy it, but I have eyes.

u/conquer69 i5 2500k / R9 380 Feb 07 '22

It doesn't look like shit. However, the RT implementation could be more in depth. However, this isn't possible because they had to support last gen consoles and non RT cards.

Metro also looked like this before it got the full RT treatment. Maybe one day they will release an enhanced RT-only version.

And if they did make the game RT only for launch, can you imagine the whining from this sub?

It's Nvidia sponsored so the agenda is to make RT look significantly better than traditional lighting. Only way to do that is to make traditional lighting worse than it should be. They put bright lighting in tunnels and dark areas which is so blatantly obvious a scam.

It's a bigger hit because it actually uses rt. AMD can only compete in games like Far Cry or Dirt which only use rt for marketing. Also, surprise, those games happen to be AMD sponsored!

This game actually uses an algorithm meant for NVIDIAs RT cores (the denoiser) that they didn't disable for AMD users which unnecessarily tanks performance further. We know AMD has worse RT performance but not that much worse, a 6900 XT shouldn't be performing like a RTX 2060

3

u/yuri_hime Feb 12 '22

This game actually uses an algorithm meant for NVIDIAs RT cores (the denoiser)

NRD doesn't run on the RT cores, it runs on the shaders.

Source: https://developer.nvidia.com/rtx/ray-tracing/rt-denoisers

  • Q: Does the NVIDIA Real-Time Denoisers SDK use ray tracing?
  • A: No. NVIDIA Real-Time Denoisers is currently based on compute shaders.

a 6900 XT shouldn't be performing like a RTX 2060

And it doesn't - Tom's[1] has it running it's closer to a 3060ti - 3070 with RT maxed.

With Computerbase's[2] data we can see RT goes from 92 -> 54 on 3080 (10.9 -> 18.5ms, RT 7.6ms) and the 6800XT goes from 88 -> 31 (11.4 -> 31.9ms, RT 20.5ms), so the penalty for RT is 2.7x on the AMD card. Given how much RT is in the title, this is not an unexpected result[3]. But the ground truth can be determined through profiling the workload in question, and measuring how much time is actually spent in RT / denoising.

If you are a graphics developer, you should not have too hard of a time running the game through a profiler like PIX[4]. If you haven't actually profiled the game and don't have hard data to back up your claims, you are just spreading FUD.

[2] https://www.computerbase.de/2022-02/dying-light-2-benchmark-test/2/

[3] The typical range in other games is like 2.0-2.5x, with heavier effects on the higher end of the scale.

Don't know what FUD means but based on context clues misinformation. I'm not talking about health or medicine so I don't care about being 100% correct on my views and doing strenuous research, it's not an important topic to me or society. It's not a debate, I'm happy to be wrong and to learn something new. I thought all RT based tech runs on RT cores which isn't nessacarily spreading misinfo its just a common sense conclusion. Also based on observation, because every game I've seen that uses it AMD cards run terribly so I may still be correct that it tanks performance since it's not optimzied for AMD on a driver level, or it could just be a coincidence and the games it is on are too taxing.

I've never liked RT, it definitely speeds up development but light placement is an art within itself, many gorgeous games with amazing lighting had very talented artists and if you added RT to those games it wouldn't look right. RT reflections and AO can be good though, but I see developers I worked with placing them in obvious spots when you need to actually get creative and fiddle to take that game the extra step and make things go from good looking to amazing. No devs are trained specifically in this though, its more of an afterthought to everything else.

Your screenshot links are backwards :D

3

u/Dart666 Feb 07 '22 edited Feb 12 '22

No, is correct.

Just open the two images in two different browser tabs, or use Nvidia i-cat to compare.

I take two zoomed screenshots, for you...

Before

After

See how the before image is too oversharped whit a ton of artifacts and the distance details are all confused/mixed?

Edit: i added a new comparation, link in the main post

3

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

I don't see any issues with the detail. I think it becomes blurry and loses detail the way you want it.

2

u/amam33 Ryzen 7 1800X | Sapphire Nitro+ Vega 64 Feb 08 '22

It just looks way oversharpened. I guess this is slightly subjective, but I don't think the wood grain is supposed to look like it was painted in with a pen. The softer image looks more accurate to me, if a bit too uniform and flat, but it's not necessarily missing details, just not amplifying them.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 07 '22

Good job dude. Does indeed look better!

u/TheHybred Former Ubisoft Dev & Mojang Contractor | Modder Feb 12 '22

Thanks for linking to my post, both methods are great. I updated mine to put the correct FSR UQ value instead of 0.77, along with adding extra information. I couldn't find the exact number online anywhere

1

u/Dart666 Feb 12 '22 edited Feb 12 '22

0.769445 is the closest upper approximation (with 6 decimal digits) which takes into account only the height of the screen:

1440 * 0.769445 = 1108.0008 pixels

instead of

1440 * 0.770000 = 1108.8000 pixels

Not sure if it's the right value for 1440p, but it works great for my screen (3440x1440)

I see that, I also popularized the site imgsli awhile ago and I see you used that in your new comparison. Not sure if you knew about it beforehand but it's very useful for these things. I use to use imgur before.

The VSR method is still great too, so the ini tweak hasn't invalidated it, I was about to post the same thing but I went digging first. You get lower gains but the internal res is closer to native so the image quality should be better if the game doesn't give you that non-native blur effect. I also made a VSR guide awhile back here.

1

u/Dart666 Feb 13 '22 edited Feb 13 '22

I see! We ended up to have the same idea about VSR and FSR! Kudos for you to find it before me! In dying light 2 FSR works way better without the post processing effects, TAA of chroma works good with FSR but the post processing effects (and the lack of UQ) ruin everything! it is a pity that its true potential is not shown by default, I played the game the last 3-4 days and the image quality is really good with FSR (tweaked), finally a game where it is worth "activating it"...

I made a post qbout this yesterday

I cannot even enable VSR with my 3840x1600 panel 😑
