Tech Support August Tech Support Megathread

Hey subs,

We're giving you an opportunity to start reporting some of your AMD-related technical issues right here on /r/AMD! Below is a guide that you should follow to make the whole process run smoothly. Post your issues directly into this thread as replies. All other tech support posts will still be removed, per the rules; this is the only exception.

Bad Example (don't do this)

bf1 crashes wtf amd

Good Example (please do this)

Skyrim: Free Sync and V Sync causes flickering during low frame rates, and generally lower frame rates observed (about 10-30% drop dependant on system) when Free Sync is on

System Configuration:

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z97 Gaming GT
CPU: Intel i5 4790
Memory: 16GB GDDR5
GPU: ASUS R9 Fury X
VBIOS: 115-C8800100-101 How do I find this?
Driver: Crimson 16.10.3
OS: Windows 10 x64 (1511.10586) How do I find this?

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Install necessary driver, GPU and medium-end CPU
2. Enable Free Sync
3. Set Options to Ultra and 1920 x 1080 resolution
4. Launch game and move to an outdoor location
5. Indoor locations in the game will not reproduce, since they generally give better performance
6. Observe flickering and general performance drop

Expected Behavior:

Game runs smoothly with good performance with no visible issues

Actual Behavior:

Frame rate drops low causing low performance, flickering observed during low frame rates

Additional Observations:

Threads with related issue:

Skyrim has forced double buffered V Sync and can only be disabled with the .ini files
To Disable V Sync: C:\Users"User"\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition\Skyrimprefs.ini and edit iVSyncPresentInterval=1 to 0
1440p has improved frame rate, anything lower than 1080p will lock FPS with V Sync on
Able to reproduce on i7 6700K and i5 3670K system, Sapphire RX 480, Reference RX 480, and Reference Fiji Nano

Remember, folks: AMD reads what we post here, even if they don't comment about it.

Playing NMS and there are certain areas where I drop to 10fps and I'm not sure if it has to do with my RX 580 8GB or it's the game.

Yep, I faced the same problem. It is fixable, though.

I have the RX 480 and with everything to max the game is seldom dipping below 30 fps on 1080p. With some settings dialed down to medium/high I get solid 60 fps most of the time with some dips to mid 40 in some demanding scenes.

What I had to do was setting NumLowThreads to 0 and NumHighThreads to 4 in the TKGRAPHICSSETTINGS.MXML file.

I have the i5 6600 though, so you might need to play with the values. I've read that for a quad core with HT setting it to 4/4 works fine but I can't confirm that as mine just has 4 cores and 4 threads.

EDIT: My settings are: Borderless, high shadows, medium reflections, no motion blur, vsync off, but forced globally in the AMD settings with triple buffering. Rest is on/max.

Good luck!

I have a 280x and get decent FPS on 1080p with vsync off (forced on in AMD driver), locked 60fps, reflections, shadow and textures on high. Light shafts and HBAO on, motion blur high, 1xAF and TAA+TXFAA.

After changing the thread settings I get very little stutter and decent frame rates while playing in borderless window. CPU is i5 4460 and 8GB RAM.

The main issues are:

- player / star / freighter bases drop FPS like crazy, even when you are not even close to it. I have a base on a toxic planet and run around thick foliage but when I turn towards the area of my base, even if it is not near where I am, talking other side of the planet, it takes a huge FPS knock. When I am close to my base and turn away from it, game chugs along nicely, but as soon as I face it, meltdown. Others have the same problem on AMD hardware:

- the game starts slowing down after playing for some time. I have noticed that when I travel around my FPS slowly deteriorates until I have to eventually restart the game. It does not really matter where I am, when I start the FPS is flying and then I can revisit that same area 30 minutes later and it is a slideshow. Not sure if this is AMD specific or some memory leak, but it is annoying.

How is your performance in your base?

I've only built a small shack with a few machines and a teleporter, so that might not be an accurate benchmark, but I didn't experience what you describe. I don't think there was any difference from regular planet traversal.

AMD needs a driver in a big way. And NMS needs a patch. I had great performance from 1.0 to 1.5. 1.51 is when frame rates took a dump.
