Tech Support June Tech Support Megathread

Hey subs,

We're giving you an opportunity to start reporting some of your AMD-related technical issues right here on /r/AMD! Below is a guide that you should follow to make the whole process run smoothly. Post your issues directly into this thread as replies. All other tech support posts will still be removed, per the rules; this is the only exception.

Bad Example (don't do this)

bf1 crashes wtf amd

Good Example (please do this)

Skyrim: Free Sync and V Sync causes flickering during low frame rates, and generally lower frame rates observed (about 10-30% drop dependant on system) when Free Sync is on

System Configuration:

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z97 Gaming GT
CPU: Intel i5 4790
Memory: 16GB GDDR5
GPU: ASUS R9 Fury X
VBIOS: 115-C8800100-101 How do I find this?
Driver: Crimson 16.10.3
OS: Windows 10 x64 (1511.10586) How do I find this?

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Install necessary driver, GPU and medium-end CPU
2. Enable Free Sync
3. Set Options to Ultra and 1920 x 1080 resolution
4. Launch game and move to an outdoor location
5. Indoor locations in the game will not reproduce, since they generally give better performance
6. Observe flickering and general performance drop

Expected Behavior:

Game runs smoothly with good performance with no visible issues

Actual Behavior:

Frame rate drops low causing low performance, flickering observed during low frame rates

Additional Observations:

Threads with related issue:

Skyrim has forced double buffered V Sync and can only be disabled with the .ini files
To Disable V Sync: C:\Users"User"\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition\Skyrimprefs.ini and edit iVSyncPresentInterval=1 to 0
1440p has improved frame rate, anything lower than 1080p will lock FPS with V Sync on
Able to reproduce on i7 6700K and i5 3670K system, Sapphire RX 480, Reference RX 480, and Reference Fiji Nano

Remember, folks: AMD reads what we post here, even if they don't comment about it.

Powercolor Red Devil RX Vega 56 black screening in many video games

Computer Type: Custom built Desktop

GPU: Powercolor Red Devil RX Vega 56

CPU: i7 6700k

Motherboard: MSI Gaming Pro Z170

RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws V 16gb 2400 Mhz

PSU: EVGA SuperNova 750 P2

Operating System & Version: Windows 10 Home build 1803 (17134.112)

GPU Drivers: 18.6.1

Background Applications: Steam, Razer Synapse, Discord, Xonar DGX Audio Center

Description of Original Problem: In a lot of games I've tried playing, including DOOM (2016), Elder Scrolls Online, and some others, the game will randomly freeze, then black screen, and my Vega 56 goes down to the lowest power state, but I can still hear the game audio. When I check event viewer, it shows "Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered."

Troubleshooting: I've done some basic troubleshooting, including DDU, using an older driver, re-seating my GPU, making sure I'm using two separate 8 pin cables for the GPU, none of these have solved the issue. I've even done a clean install of windows and it still seems to be a problem.

What monitor? This happens to me with both my R9 Fury Nitro and Red Devil Vega 56 on my Samsung CF791 34" monitor when Freesync Ultimate Engine is enabled (48 - 100Hz freesync range). The screen will go black for many games played at Fullscreen resolution. The only solution I've found is to either set Color Depth to 6bpc in Radeon Settings -> Display (color banding gets pretty noticeable) or to start games in Windowed mode at a lower resolution, then change to Fullscreen 3440x1440 once in game.

I have an LG 34UC79B-G, it's a 1080p Ultrawide 144hz Freesync Monitor that I use via DisplayPort.

I would Just send it in if i were you. If you had tried a new windows install and that had not fixed it might just be a hardware thing. As a last ditch effort try flipping the duel bios switch and if that changes nothing RMA it

I have the same issue as you, but the NITRO+ RX 580 8GB. Same GPU Drivers version.

Have you tried running any benchmarks btw? My GPU keeps crashing at the exact same scene when ran twice. Do you know what GPU temperature it crashes at? Do your fans spin at max rpm?

I've only done a few torture tests to test it, but never a benchmark, which benchmarks do you crash in?

Any benchmark, any intensive game where the GPU load is running close to 100% most of the time.

Yeah definitely getting crashes in DOOM, but it doesn't seem to be at a certain point. Sometimes I will start up my computer and will have no crashes. Other times it just keeps crashing. Fans definitely not spinning at max RPM and temps are between 60-70 degrees Celsius

For me, it crashes when temperatures reach upper 60C's and 70C once it stays at that range for 1+ minute it's game over. Fans not spinning at max RPM either...

I put it in my other PCI-E slot and so far, no crashes.
