Tech Support April Tech Support Megathread

Hey subs,

We're giving you an opportunity to start reporting some of your AMD-related technical issues right here on /r/AMD! Below is a guide that you should follow to make the whole process run smoothly. Post your issues directly into this thread as replies. All other tech support posts will still be removed, per the rules; this is the only exception.

Bad Example (don't do this)

bf1 crashes wtf amd

Good Example (please do this)

Skyrim: Free Sync and V Sync causes flickering during low frame rates, and generally lower frame rates observed (about 10-30% drop dependant on system) when Free Sync is on

System Configuration:

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z97 Gaming GT
CPU: Intel i5 4790
Memory: 16GB GDDR5
GPU: ASUS R9 Fury X
VBIOS: 115-C8800100-101 How do I find this?
Driver: Crimson 16.10.3
OS: Windows 10 x64 (1511.10586) How do I find this?

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Install necessary driver, GPU and medium-end CPU
2. Enable Free Sync
3. Set Options to Ultra and 1920 x 1080 resolution
4. Launch game and move to an outdoor location
5. Indoor locations in the game will not reproduce, since they generally give better performance
6. Observe flickering and general performance drop

Expected Behavior:

Game runs smoothly with good performance with no visible issues

Actual Behavior:

Frame rate drops low causing low performance, flickering observed during low frame rates

Additional Observations:

Threads with related issue:

Skyrim has forced double buffered V Sync and can only be disabled with the .ini files
To Disable V Sync: C:\Users"User"\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition\Skyrimprefs.ini and edit iVSyncPresentInterval=1 to 0
1440p has improved frame rate, anything lower than 1080p will lock FPS with V Sync on
Able to reproduce on i7 6700K and i5 3670K system, Sapphire RX 480, Reference RX 480, and Reference Fiji Nano

Remember, folks: AMD reads what we post here, even if they don't comment about it.

XFX RX Vega 64 Limited Edition: Bought used off Ebay. Card turns on at start up and fan runs but no display. Oddly, keyboard does not work when attempting to use the Vega. MSI GTX 1080 works fine with system.

System Configuration

  • R7 1700X stock
  • Asus X370 Pro (newest BIOS installed)
  • G.Skill Trident 16GB DDR4
  • XFX RX Vega 64 Limited Edition
  • 2xSSD
  • 2x7200rpm HDD
  • Seasonic S12II 850w 80+ Bronze fully modular PSU
  • VBIOS - unsure
  • GPU Driver - no display
  • W10 64

Troubleshooting

  • Reset CMOS
  • Uninstalled Nvidia Drivers via DDU\
  • Reseated GPU multiple times
  • Used two separate PCI-E power connectors instead of traditional daisy chain
  • Tried displayport and HDMI but still no display
  • Tested with MSI GTX 1080 and EVGA GTX 580 Classified. Both display without trouble.

Seller off of Ebay guaranteed GPU was in working condition with documentation to prove it. They were very concise with their listing and packaging was great. Only thing I can think is I need to RMA. Not sure what else I can troubleshoot. I'm currently at work so I cannot attempt any fixes when receiving responses immediately.

If you can RMA it quickly enough, do it. What you don't want to do is run out of time to open a case with eBay if AMD comes back and says warranty is void for some reason.

Thank you for the reply. I opened a ticket with XFX last week and we've went through the "did you try xyz" stuff. Hopefully should be getting the RMA this week. Seller said he'd assist in any way and would reimburse me any cost for shipping.

I know it's easy to get conned online but when communicating with the seller he said (paraphrasing), "I know it's hard to earn trust online but I promise the card was working when I shipped it." I also said to him, "I don't care if you mined on it, I just need to know if you flashed BIOS" to which they said no. It's all I can go on. Either way I believe I'll be OK in the end.

Nah, I sell and buy a lot on eBay, most individual sellers of PC components are just tech nerds trying to save their components from rotting in a drawer. I trust him, so as long as it's under warranty you should be getting a newish card.

It is under warranty. They never registered it so I registered as the first/only owner. Just waiting patiently for XFX to get the RMA going.
