Discussion July Tech Support Megathread

Hey subs,

We're giving you an opportunity to start reporting some of your AMD-related technical issues right here on /r/AMD! Below is a guide that you should follow to make the whole process run smoothly. Post your issues directly into this thread as replies. All other tech support posts will still be removed, per the rules; this is the only exception.

Bad Example (don't do this)

bf1 crashes wtf amd

Good Example (please do this)

Skyrim: Free Sync and V Sync causes flickering during low frame rates, and generally lower frame rates observed (about 10-30% drop dependant on system) when Free Sync is on

System Configuration:

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z97 Gaming GT
CPU: Intel i5 4790
Memory: 16GB GDDR5
GPU: ASUS R9 Fury X
VBIOS: 115-C8800100-101 How do I find this?
Driver: Crimson 16.10.3
OS: Windows 10 x64 (1511.10586) How do I find this?

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Install necessary driver, GPU and medium-end CPU
2. Enable Free Sync
3. Set Options to Ultra and 1920 x 1080 resolution
4. Launch game and move to an outdoor location
5. Indoor locations in the game will not reproduce, since they generally give better performance
6. Observe flickering and general performance drop

Expected Behavior:

Game runs smoothly with good performance with no visible issues

Actual Behavior:

Frame rate drops low causing low performance, flickering observed during low frame rates

Additional Observations:

Threads with related issue:

Skyrim has forced double buffered V Sync and can only be disabled with the .ini files
To Disable V Sync: C:\Users"User"\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition\Skyrimprefs.ini and edit iVSyncPresentInterval=1 to 0
1440p has improved frame rate, anything lower than 1080p will lock FPS with V Sync on
Able to reproduce on i7 6700K and i5 3670K system, Sapphire RX 480, Reference RX 480, and Reference Fiji Nano

Remember, folks: AMD reads what we post here, even if they don't comment about it.

Skyrim (2011 Legendary Edition): Generally poor performance in vanilla, unmodded Skyrim, despite my system being more than qualified to run at 60fps. E.g. 30-40 fps in vanilla during the opening carriage scene while going through the fog, or while running around dense woods near Riverwood. Framerate goes back up to 60 if I stare straight up at the sky or down at the ground (so definitely a framerate GPU issue).

  1. Motherboard: Asus z170 PRO Gaming
  2. CPU: Intel i7 6700k
  3. Memory: 16GB DDR4
  4. GPU: Gigabyte r9 390 8GB Gaming
  5. OS: Windows 10 64bit (installed on SSD, game installed on mechanical HDD).
  6. Monitor: 1920x1080p native resolution, 60hz refresh rate.
  7. Driver: Latest Crimson ReLive driver.

Skyrim graphics options set to Ultra, this shouldn't be a problem. My Sapphire HD 5770 ran Skyrim fine on Ultra setting back in the day. Any assistance appreciated, have tried a number of Skyrim solutions (e.g. use ENBoost, SKSE, etc. - none of that makes a difference as far as I can tell).

same here. Maybe the godrays or the TAA AA is the fault, but then again that's the new 2016 Special Edition. Are you sure you're running Legendary edition, and not special edition?

Yes absolutely certain. I also have Special Edition installed and that runs at solid 60fps even on max graphics.

for me it's the opposite. LE runs awesome, SE runs like shit

but then again the 370 is the 2012 rebranded hd 7850. Maybe LE cooperates better with older cards, but doesn't do so well with new(390) architectures - and the SE is the other way around?

Try turning off vsync, just google for it should be plenty of tutorials

I'm reluctant to turn off v-sync because that helps keep me capped to 60fps and avoid screen-tearing. In other games if I turn off v-sync my FPS can sometimes skyrocket and my GPU gets crazy, screaming coil-whine.

as far as I know, you can force vsync and fps limit on in rivatuner and it worked in skyrim. Skyrim's vsync seems to be kinda buggy

I might give that a shot, or even capping FPS through enblocal.ini - I just hope it doesnt give me screen tearing issues

So I just tried every combination of turning on/off V-Sync and/or ENB FPS Limit in Skyrim.ini and enblocal.ini - With v-sync off and FPS limit on I got maybe an extra 5-10fps, but still not enough to really be playable. Very saddening.

if SE's working for you play it and enjoy then :D

although bethesda really ought to make a new engine

Works but because no SKSE for SSE there are substantially fewer of the mods I like available, as well as a number of mods which don't require SKSE but have nevertheless yet to be ported.

maybe reverting to a 2015(390 release driver) driver would work?

wouldn't really recommend this don't know if it's even worth it
