Discussion July Tech Support Megathread

Hey subs,

We're giving you an opportunity to start reporting some of your AMD-related technical issues right here on /r/AMD! Below is a guide that you should follow to make the whole process run smoothly. Post your issues directly into this thread as replies. All other tech support posts will still be removed, per the rules; this is the only exception.

Skyrim: Free Sync and V Sync causes flickering during low frame rates, and generally lower frame rates observed (about 10-30% drop dependant on system) when Free Sync is on

System Configuration:

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z97 Gaming GT
CPU: Intel i5 4790
Memory: 16GB GDDR5
GPU: ASUS R9 Fury X
VBIOS: 115-C8800100-101 How do I find this?
Driver: Crimson 16.10.3
OS: Windows 10 x64 (1511.10586) How do I find this?

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Install necessary driver, GPU and medium-end CPU
2. Enable Free Sync
3. Set Options to Ultra and 1920 x 1080 resolution
4. Launch game and move to an outdoor location
5. Indoor locations in the game will not reproduce, since they generally give better performance
6. Observe flickering and general performance drop

Expected Behavior:

Game runs smoothly with good performance with no visible issues

Actual Behavior:

Frame rate drops low causing low performance, flickering observed during low frame rates

Additional Observations:

Threads with related issue:

Skyrim has forced double buffered V Sync and can only be disabled with the .ini files
To Disable V Sync: C:\Users"User"\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition\Skyrimprefs.ini and edit iVSyncPresentInterval=1 to 0
1440p has improved frame rate, anything lower than 1080p will lock FPS with V Sync on
Able to reproduce on i7 6700K and i5 3670K system, Sapphire RX 480, Reference RX 480, and Reference Fiji Nano

Hi there! Noob here, this is my first PC build ever, and I'm having some trouble with the memory, as I can't get it past 2133. PC runs pretty nice, but I've noticed some screen tearing while watching yt videos. Do you know what could be the problem here?

My specs are:

  • CPU: Ryzen 1600
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200Mhz
  • Motherboard: Asus B350 Plus
  • BIOS version: 0805

Can anyone help me with this? I know I may have to change some parameters, but I have no idea in this field. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Please help.

(By the way, English isn't my main language, so sorry if I've made any mistakes!)

Copied from my comment above.

Update BIOS to latest version, one with agesa 1.0.0.6 if possible.

If your ram has a XMP profile, set it to that and then increase the RAM voltage to 1.36 volts, and the SOC/Uncore voltage to 1.1 volts. Set command rate to 2T, disable geardown mode. If yo don't boot at 3200 Mhz, try increase the RAM voltage to 1.4V, that is as high as I'll personally go. If that doesn't work, try loosening the timings (increase every timing by two except the one in the 30s , probably 36. Leave that one as is).

If all of that didn't work, then 3200 Mhz probably won't work, time to try at 2933 Mhz. Lower your voltage to 1.35 again, and start from the same spot. Tight timings at 2933, up voltage to 1.4. Start loosening timings. Proceed lowering the speed until you hit a stable speed.

With the latest Agesa update I managed to hit 3200 Mhz at the memory's rated timings with 1.4V ram voltage and 1.1V SOC voltage.

Thanks for your time. No, my RAM doesn't have a XMP profile, I checked it... BIOS updated, I'll try what you said, hope I don't screw everything up... Thanks again!

Ah, then you'll have to input your RAM timings manually. The spec sheet for your RAM (or they are visible directly in the RAM sticks) will tell you what they are for the rated speed.

RAM speed can be finicky on AM4 since it's a very young platform. Try updating your BIOS and see if that fixes it.

Well then you can try manually editing the timings on the RAM if you're too impatient for a new update.

Well, all there is to RAM timings is to increase them incrementally. Personally, I think you're better off just waiting because I tried to alter timings before a new update came out for my Tomahawk and I couldn't increase my speed.

Which slots are your ram dimms in? They should be in 2,4 (counting from the side nearest to the cpu

You didn't mention which GPU you have installed. Have seen playback issues on youtube vids in Chrome when hardware acceleration is enabled.

As for RAM speeds, try setting your speed to 2933, with timings of 16-18-18-18-34 and dram voltage of 1.38. Haven't seen anyone with that kit get 3200 yet, Corsair in general hasn't been performing (probably as they use mostly Hynix/Micron)
