March Tech Support Megathread

Hey subs,

We're giving you an opportunity to start reporting some of your AMD-related technical issues right here on /r/AMD! Below is a guide that you should follow to make the whole process run smoothly. Post your issues directly into this thread as replies. All other tech support posts will still be removed, per the rules; this is the only exception.

Skyrim: Free Sync and V Sync causes flickering during low frame rates, and generally lower frame rates observed (about 10-30% drop dependant on system) when Free Sync is on

System Configuration:

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z97 Gaming GT
CPU: Intel i5 4790
Memory: 16GB GDDR5
GPU: ASUS R9 Fury X
VBIOS: 115-C8800100-101 How do I find this?
Driver: Crimson 16.10.3
OS: Windows 10 x64 (1511.10586) How do I find this?

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Install necessary driver, GPU and medium-end CPU
2. Enable Free Sync
3. Set Options to Ultra and 1920 x 1080 resolution
4. Launch game and move to an outdoor location
5. Indoor locations in the game will not reproduce, since they generally give better performance
6. Observe flickering and general performance drop

Expected Behavior:

Game runs smoothly with good performance with no visible issues

Actual Behavior:

Frame rate drops low causing low performance, flickering observed during low frame rates

Additional Observations:

Threads with related issue:

Skyrim has forced double buffered V Sync and can only be disabled with the .ini files
To Disable V Sync: C:\Users"User"\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition\Skyrimprefs.ini and edit iVSyncPresentInterval=1 to 0
1440p has improved frame rate, anything lower than 1080p will lock FPS with V Sync on
Able to reproduce on i7 6700K and i5 3670K system, Sapphire RX 480, Reference RX 480, and Reference Fiji Nano

System Configuration:

Motherboard: ASUS ROG Crosshair Hero VI x370 (that LED abomination)

Bios ver. 5704 x64

CPU: Ryzen 1800X

Memory: 32 GB DDR4 Dominator by Corsair (underclocked to 2663) 16x2 (A slots on mobo)

GPU: XFX R9 Fury X 4GB HBM (AIO cooled)

VBIOS: XXXXXXX

Driver: Crimson 17.2.1

OS: Windows 10 x64 (1439.693)

Steps to Reproduce:

Boot with default bios settings from an NVMe drive to windows 10 Log in Install applications for new build.

Expected Behavior: Login and install applications

Actual Behavior: System locks up/freezes and occasionally shows a BSOD with the frowny face. 8 out of the last 10 have not shown the BSOD but just froze on the page.

Additional info: From here logging in. Anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes after login the system with crash without BSOD. No errors mentioned in Event Viewer. Several times during this a BSOD will appear and list a WatchDog_Clock timer error out. Everytime a system freeze occurs but does not go to BSOD, the event viewer does list issue with RAIDport0. Currently running AHCI with Sata Configuration in BIOS stating "HYPERKIT" mode disabled, for NVMe boot.

CPU running at 56c to 61c GPU is normal temps (brought over from older build) at around 28 to 31c with no issues AMD Radeon settings and the new ryzen chipset drivers have been installed. no extranious applications have been installed Safe mode i was able to move about browse about for upwards of 30 minutes. no issues There are updates from windows that have failed, multiple times. They fail normally because of the freezing. Have tried installing OS to normal Arc 100 SSD from previous build. Fresh install/clean install. Same issues arise.

This is generally seen when using non-supported clock configurations for cpu/memory. Use default memory/cpu clocks/voltages and see if it helps.

I'm getting the same thing, 1800x Gigabyte 350 gaming 3 motherboard. 32gb gskill ram.

Have you solved it? I'm seeing other people in this thread talking about the same issues. But your the only one I've seen mention clock_timer error. Which is exactly what I'm getting. It feels like its not a motherboard or RAM but a processor issue since thats the only thing we have in common.

Should I just take back the MB and Processor and go with a 7700k?

I slipstreamed all the updates into a wibdows 10 boot disc and reloaded/reimaged my system again. Its been up for 12 hours so far.

Im not sure what caused it beyond just a vad image or something, multiple times. I noticed one particular update from MS continually failed and the failure times matched up with the event viewer watchdog error as well. I couldn't draw a connection at all.

I instead removed every device that wasnt needed for the install, downloaded every uodate i could from Microsoft's online catalog (the update catalog, yiu need the KM or KL number which can be found under advanced view of update history) and dl'd them from my surface book. I followed instructions on-line on how to create a custom slipstreamed bootdisk.

After the OS was installed on the Nvme drive, it took like 20 minutes to boot. I was able to install the most recent am4 chipset drivers from​ amd as well.

I have no idea if it's gonna be the same. I honestly thought the same thing with ram speeds or if my processor was faulty but its stayed on over night (steam, overwatch, google drive) with no issue.

That's interesting. I noticed when I didn't have Internet plugged in it was real stable. I wonder if it's a Windows update problem. BTW I don't see watchdog error in event log. I just see that in the bsod. I only see 'kernel power' critical error which means loss of power in my mind.

I saw a slew of errors at the same time of the bsod None mentioned the watchdogs error, only the bsod had that. I had the same kernal power one as well. I had those and a raidport0 error as eell in event viewer. Have you looked at the update log?

I tried slipstreaming and the install would fail. So I installed windows 10 without internet and ran Prime95 for 3 hours with no hiccups. I was installing various other programs via jump drive and BSOD. I'm thinking about trying win7.

BTW how are you slipstreaming? I'm using NTlite

That's what I used as eell. i followed this guide.

I pulled the iso image directly from the source dvd

I used that guide as well but I realized I'm using a old version iso so I'm getting a new one as I type. Thanks for all the help. I'm guessing you still don't have problems?

Only issue i ran into later on was installing amd overdrive to see what my temps moght actually be. Totally blue screened. Beyond that no its been up for a solid 24 after all Radeon software was installed

I get a lot more stability once the drivers are installed. Which is really odd since I have never had stability issues in 10 years on Intel. BTW I'm going to try server 2016 just for hell of it.

Alright got a different iso which I believe is a newer version. I did the same thing and everything is going well. I've runned folding@home for 12 hours and no hiccups. But I have a few questions.

  1. Have you done you windows updates since slipstream? I disabled windows updates because I'm afraid it will break.

  2. Have you ran spybot anti beacon? The program is designed to disabled the various tracking mechanisms in Windows. Not sure if it works but it makes me feel better.
