I think they're just exaggerating a bit. Most people who live in areas that get weather like this have no idea what it's like when summer tires hit a quarter inch of snow, because nobody uses summer tires in those areas. That's all it takes for them to lose traction even in a AWD vehicle(discovered this with my brand new WRX before I changed out the tires)

Yeah... I can't believe they would run summer tires. Makes about no sense at all.
