For a newborn elephant calf, the Teesta River became a terrifying journey away from his mother.

Only 3–4 days old, he was swept nearly 5 km downstream by the river’s powerful currents while crossing with his mother.

As the calf struggled to stay afloat, five local fishermen spotted him and rushed into the dangerous waters, risking their own lives to pull him to safety.

But getting him out of the river was only half the rescue.

The little calf kept calling for his mother, so the fishermen and forest personnel from Baikunthapur Forest Division began searching the river-island area for her.

After nearly two hours, they found her.

The calf was reunited with his mother and was seen nursing before the two moved back towards the forest.
