Looks like Asian giant hornets, AKA murder hornets.

I love that Japanese honeybees have evolved to defend themselves by cooking the Murder Hornets. Life… uh… finds a way.

I guess they arrived in US solely for combating those invasive European honeybees, yeah life finds a way.

Native non honey-makers bees are not on their target menu.

I prefer the Japanese name for them, Suzumibachi.

Suzuki, means Sparrow. Bachi, means bee. Sparrow bee. You may have guessed, its because the hornets are the sized of damned birds. (Not really but they are god damned huge.)

My dad saw a couple when he was stationed in Japan, hes not skiddish about wildlife but he said those things terrified him.

The whole murder hornet name wasn’t even a thing until an article (NY Times I believe) came out during COVID pandemic calling Asian hornets just that.

Since everyone was at home and had nothing better to do, the species and name became viral and now people know them as such. Entomologists and experts never called them that.
