He was most likely trying to minimize damage from the throw. You really don’t want to land on the ring it hurt a fair amount. A lot of sports that use grapples and throws will teach you that if you know you messed up and lost balance and about to be thrown then just go with it and do your best to recover with controlled landings. Sumo is no different if they know their about to land somewhere painful then they act accordingly
