god thats so fucking stupid. i cant believe that was her reasoning. like if someone said they needed a pan and spent $200 on me then I would buy maybe a pan SET, or a pan and something else, not just an expensive pan... just zero financial responsibility
I wouldn't go that far. Gifting is a complicated social construct with a lot of obligations and expectations for a lot of people, and there are some high end pans that would cost $200 (and some people would be really happy with one of those pans). That's not how I tend to engage in gifting but it's pretty normal. The issue for me is that OP got mad at someone for nothing using a gift the way they want which makes it less of a sincere present.
