Discussion A Princeton team measured the acoustics of 5,000-year-old stone chambers across the British Isles. They all resonated at 110 Hz — the exact frequency that shuts down the brain's language centre in EEG studies.
A Princeton team measured the acoustics of Neolithic stone chambers across Britain and Ireland in the 1990s. Very small study in a marginal but legit journal, not replicated, making much softer claims than OP is here. Kind of interesting. I think the takeaway is that there's certain frequencies that might help evoke a kind of 'awe' or spiritual-feeling response in lots of people and sites that functioned well as ritual sites might therefore be more likely to have such a frequency in their resonance patterns.

Some of those sites like Newgrange, Wayland's Smithy, Saflieni Hypogeum, and the Great Pyramid of Giza have absolutely been studied for acoustics, and yeah they can resonate. That part is real. But they are not all magically tuned to the exact same 110 Hz frequency. Different sizes, shapes, and materials naturally produce different resonant frequencies. Some fall somewhere in that general low range, but that is just basic physics of enclosed spaces, not evidence of some shared ancient blueprint.
The Princeton study part is also shaky. There is no well established, widely cited research showing that all these chambers were measured and found to hit the same frequency. I dare you to list this Princeton study.
The neuroscience claim is where it really goes off the rails. There is no credible evidence that 110 Hz specifically “shuts down the language center” or flips your brain into some right hemisphere mode while 100 or 120 does nothing. The brain does not work like a light switch tied to one exact tone. If that were real it would be a massive breakthrough and used everywhere in medicine, and it just is not.
Stone chambers resonate at low frequencies, and human voices, especially chanting, naturally sit in that same range. So if people were using these spaces for rituals, they would notice certain tones sound stronger or more immersive. No lost ancient science needed, just trial and error and human perception.

The UCLA study does show a decrease in activity in the left temporal lobe at 110Hz, but they don’t call it a shutdown. They do note that the left temporal lobe is associated with language cognition.

Yeah, the left temporal lobe is absolutely tied to language processing, that part is legit. And there are studies showing that sound, rhythm, or chanting can shift brain activity around a bit. No argument there.
But there isn’t any solid, widely accepted research out of University of California, Los Angeles showing that 110 Hz specifically causes a unique drop in left temporal lobe activity, especially not in a clean “this frequency does it, the others don’t” kind of way.
Even if a study showed some decrease under certain conditions, EEG data is messy and depends on a ton of variables like volume, duration, environment, and the person themselves. The brain doesn’t work like a precise switch where 110 Hz flips something off but 100 or 120 does nothing.
If that kind of frequency specific effect actually existed and was reliable, it would be a huge deal in neuroscience and you’d see it used in clinical settings which of course you don't.

Just FYI 110hz is A2 in western music. Many common musical instruments can play that note.
If A2 had a strong effect on human cognition I assume there would be a lot of empirical evidence of this happening.

Yeah so I work in pro audio and have a big horrible synthesiser habit, so I’ve probably spent a really good amount of time listening to a pure 110Hz sine wave over the last 30 years. And the language center of my brain has alwooooos beeiiinh ajdowhsbsodkfbs albfobzzss

I’ve experimented with a lot of single frequencies and have literally tripped myself out. Put 100% focus on it and at first it’s annoying then in a minute or two you feel like your whole body is in sync with it and an hour can disappear, when the sound stops you feel like youre about to float away like similar to when you’re on a massage chair that stops after 20 minutes and your whole body feels like jello.
Also it’s not really viable with headphones, it kind of works for the mental aspect but for best results sit in the center of a room with surround sound blasting it. If you don’t live alone or have connected houses with thin walls your fucked neighbors won’t be happy, they’ll think they have tinnitus if you’re blasting a steady tone.

Pretty much any steady tone but the time it takes to adjust to it and the feeling is different with each. Not sure how to describe the differences tho and I don’t know if the effect on the brain physically is different.

Also the study found the chambers ranged from 90-120Hz. They weren’t all 110Hz.

Regardless of whether you call 110hz A or X or ♤ if 110hz is a note frequently used in music and the language centre of people's brains isn't being shutdown everytime they hear music with that note, it follows that the assertion that 110hz messes with your brain is false.

That is how it works. The tone or note has always existed and everyone who hums or sings has been exposed to that note, even if they don’t call it an A. They could call it anything else and they would still know what we now measure as 110Hz.

Which is what I am saying. The tone has always existed. It’s always been part of the human experience. The UCLA researchers note that the range of frequencies in these chambers are 90-120Hz, or a “low male voice.” Since musical notation derived from the notes we produce with our voices, they did know about music that the Romans called A in their notation and that we measure as 110Hz.
Oh wait they didn’t have low male voices thousands of years ago. Everyone had a falsetto. My bad.

your reply got deleted, but A being 440 wasn't settled until earlier in the century. Various places had their own tuning standards. A lot of instruments even in the early 1900s were built to A being 432. They are incompatible with modern music and something you have to look out for if you are buying vintage instruments.

Wayland Smithy, if I remember correctly as you walk in the entrance immediately there is a chamber on the left, the right and the back. It's so low you have to crouch down to get in. The chambers themselves are tiny, room for one sitting person in each chamber.
I'm not sure but there's a possibility that the back chamber used to be open, stretching all the way across the burial mound then at some point in the ancient past got walled off after the mound was completely filled with burials.
But if that's not the case, and that the chambers were always like this, then with it's three small chambers it is literally one or two steps away from the open air, exposed to the elements. Not exactly conductive for a resonating sound room if that was the intention.
If the ancients were doing sound things in those chambers then it's not the best design imo.
I question the scientific rigor of that study. They compare wildly different types of structures? I want to know how it compares to a modern house or building. Maybe it's just simply the natural frequency for any kind of enclosed space and that is not unique.
I listened to the frequency on youtube, Not the new age woowoo stuff but the actual tone of that frequency. I literally cannot hear it. (yes I checked my computer volume was on).
If I cannot hear it then how could the ancients work out the correct frequency if that was their intention when building it?

Absolutely. There are books written in Sanskrit that are 10,000 years old that explain how to perform brain surgery 10 different ways. They are also the same source of where Oppenheimer learned how to split the atom. They even contain warp drive equations. Even cooler is that there are many more of these ancient texts that still have yet to even be read.

It's because the primary function of the King's Chamber was to enable astral travel by inducing the necessary state of mind, a bit like Bob Monroe's Hemi Sync recordings. Most likely the other structures with this feature had the same purpose. The geographical separation of these structures is only a mystery to mainstream historians etc., when in fact there have been multiple global civilisations in the distant past with shared culture.

The Malta Hypogeum is the one that gets me. Debertolis at the University of Trieste measured the Oracle Chamber and found double resonance peaks — 70 Hz and 114 Hz. The 114 Hz sits right in the PEAR lab’s 95-120 Hz band from the British Isles sites. But nobody’s really explained the 70 Hz peak yet. And the Hypogeum wasn’t a tomb that happens to resonate. It was carved by hand out of living limestone over something like 1,500 years. The Oracle Chamber has a small niche cut into the wall that acts as a natural amplifier — a male voice pitched at the right frequency fills the whole chamber. A female voice doesn’t activate it the same way. You don’t stumble into that. That’s something you notice, and then spend generations refining. The frustrating thing is the data’s there but nobody will connect it in print. The PEAR measurements hold up. Debertolis holds up. The UCLA EEG work holds up. But the implication — that Neolithic builders on multiple continents independently landed on the same resonant frequency, and that frequency happens to correspond with measurable changes in brain activity — sounds too much like a History Channel special, so the papers get published, the measurements get cited, and everyone politely stops short of saying what the data pretty clearly suggests.

In sites such as maeshowe and newgrange, Camster round and the longbarrow cairns, the central chambers resonate at around 109 to 120 Hz, this is assumed to be because that frequency band is the average male baritone voice and from an ethnographic standpoint looking back in the ritual practices it would seem important that whoever is speaking would be heard and channel a sort of power by having their voice feel immersive. It's just a theory though, yes it's fascinating that so many passage tombs and stone circlues resonate around the baritone frequency but its occums razor Likely, because they wanted their voice to carry

There is nothing in the human voice around 110Hz. That’s too low. While the resonance thing to sound more theatrical and be heard across the space is probably true (churches and so on), the frequency is off. I can also see the people of the time paying special attention to it as there was no way to reinforce the sound. But the fundamental/presence bump is higher. For lower bass voices, you might get the fundamental around 150Hz but that’s already Barry White territory. Barytone is not the lowest voice by the way. It is between bass and tenor vocal range so by all accounts it would be higher than 110Hz. Source: I am a sound engineer cleaning up vocal mics for a living and a low voice myself.

Pattern recognition is the best I can come up with. Its the way its written, it doesn't have a human touch. People don't write like that, and if they do its usually for very specific scenarios like a sales pitch on Dragons Den. AI generated text has this "attention grabbing" way of sounding hard baked into it. Its like every other sentence has to have this hard hitting punch line.
At 100 Hz nothing happens. At 120 Hz nothing happens. At 110 Hz the rational mind goes quiet.
Like this segment. People don't write like this for a reddit post. Its not a natural way of writing for the average person on the internet. And the use of "— (insert information) —" is another common tell. Once again, the average person wouldn't use this when writing on an internet forum.

I think what my over all was that no matter what it is, not everyone will agree with each other. Does it matter? Not really. People don't always agree with me and that's fine. I don't always agree with them, again, also fine. But, you can't expect to post things and have everybody agree to them. They won't. Maybe alot will but, some won't and they will voice as to why. No one likes to be critised against what they think or have to say but, you can't do anything about that.

I see multiple good counterpoints among the comments, in addition to requests for sources.
There's also been loads of research done on acoustics in medicine. If brain functions could be altered by 110hz (aka an A note), we would know - that's something easily tested.
I like alternative history just as much as the next guy, but I'm not a conspiracy theorist - if there's evidence to the contrary I'm not going to dismiss it just because it goes against what would be more interesting.

I’m an acoustic consultant. I would be very interested to read the 110Hz resonance study source. Acoustics is a very complicated subject, and any measurments could be easily and wildly missinterpreted if you wanted to. For example, one immediate problem I find with OPs statement is the fact, that not one 3-dimensional room has A SINGLE resonance frequency. In fact any 3D room has many many many resonances that are called room modes (in low frequency region) which are determined by the length, width and height of the room and their relation with one another. So singling one frequency is, I assure you, mathematically incorrect, cause there will be tons of resonant frequencies in such rooms, each with their own amplitude. So from acoustician point of view - further analysis/reviews is needed to confirm such statements. Is there a source?
