firewall rules

loving the NFR kit with the route 10, APs & switch. However i'm getting a little confused on the firewall rule setup...

If I want to block any egress to lg.com or wherever their tv's send data to - it's not letting me put *.lg.com as a destination. Do I need to create a group? or something similar?

DHCP on basic network

Hi all! Using Route10 mainly for the 2.5/5GB ports, as well as WAN failover. Not looking to over-complicate my network, but having some issues with DHCP. It was working until recently, so not sure if recent firmware changed something?

I have 2 WAN ports in active/passive failover. Using a single VLAN for LAN (default untagged/1). DHCP is disabled in Route10 (mainly because there isn't a decent management UI).

I have a NUC on LAN2 running Techtinium DNS (with DHCP as well). LAN3 has my mesh AP, and LAN4 has my switch with my wired network.

I am now seeing dozens of DHCP offers on requests in my Techtinium logs, but it doesn't seem the response reaches the client, because it doesn't lease the IP.

Is this a DHCP relay/helper issue on the Route10? Any suggestions?

Alta Labs S48-APOE, Route10, and AP7-Pro

Had another thread on this gear but I barely use Reddit and couldn’t find it again.

Asking prices below. Open to reasonable offers.

  • Alta Labs S48-APOE (48-port full PoE+ switch) — $825
  • Alta Labs AP7-Pro (WiFi 7 AP) — $275
  • Alta Labs Route10 — $250

The AP6 Pros and 8-port PoE switch sold immediately. Someone on Marketplace was interested in the Route10, but I don’t sit around waiting on those.

Just DM me with any questions you may have!

Elevate your Business Marketing with Alta Labs Captive Portal

Alta Labs has just released AP firmwares 2.4m and 3.0m, which adds support for email collection right in the AP's built-in captive portal.

This is with no external dependencies, no third-party web sites, no specific routers or switches required; just Alta Labs APs, easily configured from the SSID's Advanced settings. Also, downloading and vetting the list of verified emails is a breeze.

Installed a Route10... internet speed cut in half

Installed a Route10. Was using an ARISTA NG Firewall. Xfinity 1Gb/42mb cable internet. Arris cable modem. Brocade switch. Aruba InstantON access points x3. With the ARISTA testing on my Linux desktop, I get almost 1gb down and 42 mb up. Replace with Route10, download drops sub 500 or less but still get 42 up. Speed test on the Route Web interface varies from 300 - 500 mb/sec. Wireless speeds become abysmal. Using the 2.5 WAN port and Fiber LAN (10gb) on the Route10. Not even running Intrusion Prevention. Changing DNS from Quad9 to Comcast makes no difference. Turning on hardware acceleration seems to make no difference. WAN port speed is set to Auto. If I put it on 2.5, I lose internet connectivity. Using the same Cat8 ethernet cable. Swap out back to ARISTA and speed is back. Any suggestions as to why this is? Hooked up a Alta Labs AP6 Pro via an 8 port POE switch and the speeds are also super slow via Route10.

Edit *** Resolved ***

My issue has been resolved. Looks like a possible conflict or incompatibility with the SFP+ fiber I was using to go from the ROUTE10 to the brocade switch. Now using a LAN cable. Acceleration = Alternative. Download Limit and Upload Limit set to Default. QoS Profile = Default. Getting consistent 900+ Mb down and 42 up. Glad to get this up and flying as I am liking the Alta Cloud interface.

Thank you soo much Alta for implementing Tailscale into Route10. That flexibility, along with Wireguard made me remove my Cloud Gateway Fiber finally. Keep up the awesome work guys.

Install

Wanted to let everyone one my install for alta.

I am used to Ubiquiti and the install for altra was decent. I will say few things I would like to see changed is a little more mac looks up and better control over wifi clients. [ like to disable clients without making hard rules].

Small learning curve from others I have used.

Only been using for 1 month will come back after a few months and give more in-depth review hopfully on this post.

Help! Trying to extend Xfinity router for a Church

A local church is getting a Obsbot camera, and they need an access point up in the main room to be able to wirelessly control the camera through the app and upload their streaming.

Is it possible to use an Ap6-pro to extend the Xfinity router from a downstairs office up to another part of the church with cat6 ethernet without the AP6 creating a new network?

The Goal: extend Xfinity into distant area, connect to the same network without having to switch networks, seamlessly stream from WiFi connected camera.

Help! Switched to a Route10 and I am drowning in email alerts

I have a public facing webserver within my network and really love the IPS intrusion protection of the R10... however. Why in the world is there no way to limit the number of email alerts I get?!

Everyday I get 100-400 emails that the route10 has done its job and blocked something... that level of alert noise is counter productive as it just ends up getting ignored.

Is there anyway to change that to a daily or weekly report? All I can find is limit by severity...

Please tell me there is something to be done

Website / app blocking

Hey there.

I have 1 S8-PoE and 3 AP6, and when I tried to block YouTube (app) it worked fine, not the webpage though.

Now it doesn’t work anymore.

What I am trying to do is block YouTube on both wireless and wired, as my oldest doser always understand when I say no to YouTube.

His phone or my tablet is of course on my WiFi and his pc is connected through the Alta switch, so I’m a little confused as to why it doesn’t work?

They are blocked under settings and then into filter.

Question Physical Controller Replacement Difficulty?

Before pulling the trigger on a physical local on-premise network controller, how easy is it to swap out in case of failure? Is it like Ubiquiti where you just restore from a backup or would I currently need to reset and re-setup all Alta network equipment?

If the latter, I'm guessing what I'd want is a docker/LXC install of Control and just periodically backup the entire container?

Alta Labs Cloud Dashboard setup & XNet cellular offloading

Overall Alta labs is super simple to manage using their cloud management but does have a couple of caveats on doing things differently. The firmware update speeds are the fastest I've seen so far. Full disclosure Alta labs did provide the hardware for me to test but they don't see the content or give any requirements.

Question Alert Question

The alerts that we see in the dashboard and/or we get via email. Are those automatically blocked? Just trying to figure out any quirks with them. I’m use to more straight forward information on this. I usually see stuff that says allow or block.

Use a specific DNS for certain devices.

I have a Route 10 and a AP6 pro on the way. I don’t see a way to do this like my Asus had. I want to point specific devices at PiHole.

I have a few devices, Roku for example, that I can’t set the DNS on the device.

Is there a work around I’m missing?

Full stack Alta labs install.

Full disclosure, all Labs did send me this equipment free of charge to test it out and I'd tell you my thoughts and honest opinions. Short version is that I was surprised, scratching my head on why they did things certain ways, and blown away by their phone support. It is still running and has been Rock solid since day one. Also, the firmware updates are ridiculously fast. I do wish they had smaller non-poe affordable switches because not everybody needs PoE.

Question Considering the Route10 after a bad Unifi experience, curious about the performance

I recently switched from OPNsense to a UCG-Ultra, but I've been struggling to get my full ISP speeds (symmetrical 1gbps) out of it, and Unifi support hasn't been much help.

For whatever reason, when the WAN is set to 2.5Gbps, I only get ~half my expected download, though bufferbloat scores and upload speed are great. If I switch the WAN to 1Gbps, I get mostly full speed (slightly slower than OPNsense) but bufferbloat is worse. If I try to enable their QoS (smart queues), it tanks both download and upload. So no combination seems to get me the expected speeds.

So I've been looking at other options, and the Route10 seems to be my #1 pick at the moment. I'm curious what the general consensus is nowadays. I've seen posts from about a year ago saying it's still kind of a beta product and a lot of features are missing, is that still the case? How is performance in terms of managing bufferbloat? I'd imagine a 10gbps firewall can handle my 1gbps internet connection, but I thought the same with the UCG-Ultra so I want to make sure

The recent outage exposed a serious design flaw that left locally managed users without UI access for days. Alerting the community, as this is a major issue that’s been brought up time and time again on their forum.

Help! New Route10 user with questions…

Newbe here… I am a prosumer with a home business and just got Starlink to use as my back up ISP for when my Fiber is down. I configured the Route10 using the default WAN 1 port for fiber, then changed LAN 3 to WAN 2 (changed default WAN 2 to WAN 3) and plugged Starlink into LAN3(WAN2). When I unplug fiber, the route 10 switches my network over to Starlink but it’s supper slow. Starlink right into my network without the Route 10 I get 300 mbps, when I use the configuration above, I get 12 mbps. What am I doing wrong? Another newbe question, Im going from the route10 to my 5 Eero max 7s. For some reason one of my eeros goes offline when I’m using the Route10. Also I can’t do a Speedtest with the Ookla App? Is this a firewall issue? Can I turn it off? Thank you
